So I finally pulled the trigger on a new computer yesterday. For reference…I’ve been very, very, very happy with my old computer (coming up on 7 years old!)…an MSI Trident X Plus that I purchased in 2019 with a 2080ti and i9-9900k with 32GB of RAM. I paid $3300 for that computer in 2019 and to this day it is serving me well. I can still play DCS and X-Plane in VR with fairly good results.
I want more out of my X-Plane and DCS though…particularly in VR…so I think an upgrade was warranted. I know…I know…I could get more computer building myself…but I just don’t have the time or inclination. After poking around the past few weeks I came across this deal that seems like a pretty decent offering at $2500:
I had actually hit the order button and was waiting delivery on a similar system from MSI that was $200 cheaper…and it had a 5070ti which I thought might be more energy efficient…but for $200 extra dollars I’ll get a 5080 and an additional 2TB of SSD space.
Hoping it works well. My two boys have had CyberPower PCs for the past four years or so and they have worked flawlessly. It should be here in a few days hopefully.
I guess the reason it’s such a good price is because it’s intel. Over here Intel CPUs sell so badly that I have seen Intel pre-builts where the Mainboard and CPU were basically free.
How much real performance would you gain going all out on an AMD processor and main board, and at what price? Would you see more performance gain splurging on a 5090?
I just opened the box on something similar (AMD though, 9800X3D). I did forget to order the correct PSU->PCI/V-Card power cable so won’t be able to use it until that is delivered
For flat screen it really doesn’t matter that much. It’ll run great even with an Intel or non-X3D AMD CPU. However, if you want to fly in VR and get it to run as smooth as possible, the 9800X3D is really hard to beat. The 9950X3D has minimally less hiccups in DCS VR but it’s really not worth the extra price unless you also do a lot of tasks that benefit from high core counts and it also helps when you want to stream DCS in VR or record video in VR. The 7800X3D is also great but frametimes aren’t nearly as consistent as with the 9800X3D (or even the 9950X3D). None of the intel offerings can keep up with AMD X3D but for 2D it’s not going to be that noticeable.
That being said, I wouldn’t think about getting Intel CPU right now unless it’s a fantastic deal like beach found here and I need a PC right now. When building your own PC though I wouldn’t even consider Intel, for gaming it’s objectively worse.
That’s my experience. My 5+ YO AMD 5900X + 3080 running in 3840x2160 on medium+ settings rarely goes below 100FPS (close to 200 often). This is my [cough] work machine.
I’m fairly well in love with this Quest 3. It just works well…and I don’t do any of the social stuff with it…I just hook it up and play solo…so I don’t mind all the noise about the Metaverse and all that junk. I wouldn’t be opposed to a Pimax or something…but that is another significant investment and that company seems a bit weird to me (like Meta isn’t…)…
Simply because the deal with the 64GB or RAM and 4.0TB drive and 5080 defaulted to Intel. The only 64GB RAM offering with AMD at Costco (they have a great return policy) was a 5070Ti and 2TB drive…but it was an MSI which I would consider a superior build quality to a Cyberpower.
Can’t wait to give DCS and X-Plane a whirl with it…I’ve been itching to turn up sliders for years…
Congratulation! I just bought the new components as well and got lucky!
The CPU and RAM are significantly expensive than a few weeks (RAM 64GB DRR5 6000Mhz CL30 Kingston) or a few days ago (AMD Ryzen 9000 CPU). GPU prices are also increasing day the day.
Yes…I read (in passing) a story about Micron or something getting out of the consumer business (?)…I don’t know what exactly that means…but it is probably some typical big business effort to boost prices by creating scarcity. I’m such a skeptic of the world in general these days. I’m happy I got my purchase in before the RAM prices skyrocket. Of course…I figure the AI bubble will burst someday and GPU prices will plummet…so who knows.
