I’ve been reading up on motherboards and apparently the Asrock AM5 boards are some of the best atm.
Since the shop I was planning to order from last night delisted the 9800X3D just before I was trying to order I have some more time to consider my options. I might go for a Asrock board this time even though most of my boards have been gigabyte in the past (with one ASUS board on my i7 6700k build)
The problem these days (at least where I live) is by the time a review of a particular motherboard comes out, that board is sold out with no ETA for the next batch (generally).
Only the RAM is in stock though, so who knows. But I put the order with the largest store in the country, and their delivery predictions usually holds…
I bet their’s cheaper boards that do the same for you. Asrock is my choice now as well, though. Hardware Unboxed has a very in-depth video about that topic.
A bequiet Dark Rock Pro cooler might even be slightly better than the NH-D15, not 100% sure about that, though.
I cannot speak from firsthand experience, but if I needed an X870E you’ve pretty much chosen exactly what I’d buy
Edit: I’d probably go with the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 140 for the cooler, assuming the clearances were OK, because they’re much cheaper for essentially the same performance as the Noctua where I live. If the price is similar, I’d go with the Noctua
The Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 on my Unraid Server build has been awesome… and is still there after the recent move from R7-5700G to i7-12700K. Tried to move it to my gaming rig setup, but the ITX layout was not conducive due to the power plug and cables interference. Heard good things about the Thermalright stuff so I actually returned a Dark Rock Elite I’d picked up and grabbed a Peerless Assassin 120 and Phantom Spirit 120 for less. Solid looks and performance, though a bit noisier than the DRP4 when spun up. Solid bang for the buck, with decent looks, performance AND flexibility in installation scenarios.
I almost ordered a Crucial 2TB T705 for ~220€ to use as my C: drive but it was sold out just after I placed it in the basket. I wasn’t fast enough I guess. Regular price is ~440€…
This thread is making me consider blowing a chunk of my bonus on a new motherboard and CPU, but the choices are even more confusing now than they were three years ago, especially for something as niche and fickle as DCS.
I need to check if my IO cooler is compatible with the newer AMD stuff. For whatever reason Amazon JP isn’t selling the 9 series. How does the 7800X3D rank?
Looks like my cooler is AM5 compatible. Now the question is, should I go for the 7800 series and be a step behind the curve like I always am, or wait for the 9800 to start selling
Everything else I think I’m good…maybe need a ram upgrade since I’m running an odd 48GB (one stick refuses to work for no reason) and my 4070Ti Super seems to be robust enough for the next few years.
I noticed this too, so I ordered the 9800X3D. But I have about 1000 buyers ahead of me in line, at that shop, so it’s going to take a while. But my 5900X is still doing ok, so I can wait.
7800 is going on Amazon for about 100,000jpy right now (roughly 62% of my rent). But I can’t figure out what’s going on with the 9800. It’s marked as released on the Japanese market back in November, and there was some rumors of it going for about 88,000jpy which is extremely reasonable, but absolutely nowhere is selling it (as in, the product page doesn’t even exist) and kakaku.com, which aggregates prices for literally everything on the market, is still saying “please wait for stores to start selling it before price information can be released.”
