NTTR MAP and AV8B

Just bought both of these in the sale and am looking forward to trying them both out tonight!

Any tips for the harrier? I only have a thrustmaster hotas so I’m not sure how I’m going to map the engine nozzles yet. I think maybe an x box controller or maybe a modifier on the throttle rocker axis. Any ideas would be nice incase I haven’t thought of something

Also anywhere really interesting to play on the nevada map? I only bought it on a whim (I should of got the PG but was a bit expensive imo) can’t wait to try Las Vegas…

Any help with the harrier gratefully received. I’ve been through the dedicated thread and I see it has a few problems but shouldn’t bother me too much I don’t think

I love flying around Vegas. Its a nice map.
Does your thrust master not have split throttles ?

No single throttle annoyingly

If I stopped buying games I could probably upgrade :joy:

at $35, the Harrier is probably the best deal on the sale. Good choice.
As far as mapping the nozzles, if you are refering to the HOTAS X, might as well leave it bound to z and x on the keyboad. You have to take your hand off the throttle in the real deal to adjust them, so no harm in doing the same in the game. There isnt a whole lot of messing with them anyways, at least if you fly by the book.

Biggest tip for a new guy is dont run the engine at max RPM, it will overheat and burn out rather quickly. I leave it set to around 95% RPM, and have good luck with it. You can firewall it during takeoff and vertical landing if need be, as long as the water is turned on.

For NTTR, I would highly suggest these two downloads:

Its a training mission that has a realistic representation of the actual NTTR ranges and has all modules already placed and ready to go. Also has AWACS, tankers, etc. so you can mess with those as well.

I thought the same. It was a toss up between that and the f5. But I think I made the right decision. Will definitely download those 2 missions thanks for that!

Yes I have a hotas x at the moment as it was either go all out on the peripherals or build a decent pc and I chose the latter lol. It does the job well enough but it’s a comfort to know I can get by with the harrier too! It was a little panic moment when I realised what flying the av8b entails haha!

Thanks for the advice boys!

I have a Cobra M5 joystick, so basically a throttle wheel, a POV hat, and the equivalent of 23 buttons over 3 shifted modes. I use the hat that I normally trim with as the nozzle selector when I shift modes. I have no need to trim when I’m messing with the nozzles, so it works well for me.

Thanks dude. I hadn’t considered the pov hat! I normally use it for trim and with a modifier I think that could work well actually. Brill. I’m just downloading the 30gig of files now so ill let you all know later on :+1:

I used the Hotas X for a year or so, then upgraded to the t16000 and TWCS. Pretty much the middle ground option at $100. Hotas x is very serviceable with the use of modifier keys.

enjoy! There’s a great campaign for the harrier that takes place in the NTTR: VULCAN FORGE - A Realistic 10 Mission AV-8B Campaign on NTTR (version 1.97, updated April 10, 2022)

@sryan nice one dude I’ll add it to the download list!

Downloading the pair as we speak and nearly done so I will let you know my thoughts but I’m sure the av8b is gonna be a handful!

Gonna need a chucks guide here :joy::joy::joy::+1: so… Many… Flames…

Congratulations on your xmas gifts Vic  :christmas_tree:

Don’t mind pranging that kite over and over again, hovering is no kid’s game. It is one of the hardest thing to do in this sim. IRL you’d have your inner ear and your pants’ seat as two references for incipient movements, the sim gives you none of that, making you always chase visual clues, hence PIO, hence flames.

Do it often enough and you get it down, even without two of your senses. And then you get to look down your nose at people who land planes on huge ships with not one, but four arrestor cables and think the world of themselves for it :stuck_out_tongue:

Merry Christmas @schurem!

I spent about 4 hours with it last night playing around Las Vegas and tonopah test range (which is gorgeous!)

After I emptied it of fuel and read a bit of chucks frankly incredible guide I found it a lot easier…

Its such a beautiful thing to fly once you get it in the air.

Have done a normal landing and a couple of short takeoffs but holy hell hovering goes bad so fast lol! I can honestly say I AT NO POINT what soever had that even remotely controlled.

Loving loving the clickable cockpit though. Its much more intuitive than the A10C and I got the basics a lot faster.
It feels a lot more natural in the air as well. I am completely smitten with it and very pleased I bought it.
The NTTR map is stunning as well. I was a bit unsure at first but I think it’s heaps better than caucasus now I’ve had a play… Also I thought a mach 2 blast in the f15 would get me around faster and I found a HEAP more missions on the map for the FC3 planes which was a complete shock but very very welcome! Keep me busy for a long time this lot!

Back in the 2.0 Alpha days, I loved NTTR. And who doesn’t tire of the Georgian theatre after so many missions?

Turn the lights off and use the FLIR on the HUD to rip around in. There is much potential in the Harrier module.

Actually since Caucasus got remade for 2.5 NTTR is the oldest map of the bunch. Sometimes the profiles of the hills do show that. Still it’s a great map and I love it.

That was what I was facing… Keep flying around caucasus or branch out. I’m glad I did! It is simply stunning flying around the TTR. The craters are just incredible. It needs more exploration but I’m really enjoying it so far!

For my RAZBAN FSX Harriers, I use the TMWH HOTAS throttle as a single unit (click the little silver peg into place) and then use the lever to the right as the nozzle axis. Not really sure what that axis is supposed to do anyway. DCS I use it as a zoom view so I can take a close look at instruments.

Update for everyone…

I SUCK at flying harriers. But in fairness it is the good kind of suck where I try over and over and still enjoy myself.

Chucks guide is frankly a masterpiece. It has helped so much.
I’ve got the startup, taxi, short and vertical takeoff sorted. I can do them without any problems.
Navigation, systems etc needs work but I’m reading up on them.
Landing… Landing is really. Really not my best skill with this bird. I have the approach and checks sorted. But I cannot land vertically or conventional without fire. I’ve tried all sorts and I just need more practice but it is very hard. But it is so much fun

Landing is best done when you’re really light and when you keep your vertical speed well under control. ~2000lbs of fuel, don’t let descent exceed 300fpm.
