Most importantly, nobody NEEDS a 3 series card to enjoy DCS. This tactic is called Scarcity. The item is so scarce that you just have to have it. You commit yourself to hunting it down. Youll pay anything… There is noo need for all this.

Welp, I just did a “preorder” at an un-elevated price point. 720 eurobucks for a 3080. I’ll see when it gets delivered. Hopefully before the G2 does.

Still spending a lot of time in the reprojection zone, especially in the online clips of that video. The 10GB bar is probably limiting here as it is using 9.7 (essentially all of it). I’d like to see how much VRAM is used on the 3090. The rumored 3080ti with 20GB could see much better results.
I would bet the 2080ti performs very similarly or even better than the 3080 in DCS VR because it has that extra gig in there.

Yup, I was just going to say something to the effect of, “Wow, what a surprise, the VRAM is constantly maxed out”.
Nvidia only putting 10GB on a next gen card just boggles my mind. I’ll probably be going with the 20GB 3080 or 3090. Heck, I might not get either … my 11GB 1080Ti still makes me quite happy.

Yup, somewhere (I can’t find it right now) I posted about how in Syria I had to reduce stuff to get the memory footprint down, then I got much better performance in VR. Gosh, I have 8GB but, really, do I need 20 now, to run Syria? Ugh.
EDIT: He has a very similar setup to mine, minus the V-Card of course. What I see there isn’t making me want to rush out and spend, yet. Again, I hope they do the Vulkan thing sooner rather than later, based on his CPU results. Who knows though, how the DCS engine is going to adapt

Why do I suddenly feel like Nvidia is about to be shamed? First you tease a 3090 nobody can afford. Then you switch to the 3080 talking about “twice as fast”.
Reality check! The 3080 is only 21 to 24 percent faster…wait for it… IN BENCHMARKS!!! Nobody playing DCS IL2 or MSFS cares about Benhmarks.
In the end I would not be surprised if the 2080ti outperformed the 3080 in real world tests. Because the lies keep mounting up.

I think you’re being a bit hard on them.
Let’s consider the price…
When checking the prices at a major online store here i Norway it shows the 3080 selling for about 55-60% of the 2080TI. That’s more than reasonable even if the performance was equal.

Absolutely Right! And I will go one step further. If you need a new video card this is no time to go dumpster diving or looking for “deals”. The Nvidia 3 series is an Outstanding Deal! Both the 3070 and 3080 are the best cards for the best price PERIOD. If you are a retailer stuck with top of the line 20 series cards, I feel for You. If you are a consumer, look no further than the 3070 or 3080. They are better performers for half the money of a 20XX.
If you are in the Market because you have a 1080 or a 2070… WAIT for the 30XX series to become available. Dont go paying 6 to 700 dollars for a 20XX. You will be sorry.
But you are right. I’m being hard on them. I am Salty. Here is why. The 3080 is not TWICE the performance of the 2080Ti. So Nvidia can take their hands off your wallet and Stop spewing that gossip. The marketing hype is just out of control. They are making people think that if they dont get a 30XX they will miss the buss. Nvidia’s message this year more than ever is: “The new cards are twice the performance and make your 20XX obsolete” That is not the case.
One last thing. Had I paid 700 Dollars for my 2080Ti, I would be looking hard at the 3080 but still waiting for the 3080Ti. But from the tests I see on 3080 performance. Nahhh, Im good till the 4 series.

That’s one way to look at it. Another would be that they inflated the price for the 20XX series by quite a lot and the 30XX series now corrects for that to some extent.
Caveat emptor all around.
If only openCL would finally kick off…

Inflated or not, people paid it.
Fact remains that the 3080 is more bang for your bucks. I have a 1080 TI and have been waiting for the 30 series to arrive, so it looks like the wait was worth my while.
