NVIDIA RTX 3000 series

Not hardly, but right now 3070s are going for the same inflated price. If I’m going to get bent over, I’d like to at least get a premium frame rate

Dude, just get a 3080. It’s right at the apex of that cost/performance curve! (I think. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at the market so I hope it’s not askew)

What’s crazy is the perf. of a 3070 is no better than a 4+ yo 1080Ti, based on a few benchmarks I’ve seen recently. Hardware Unboxed benchmarks I think it was. They seem reputable.

Word. I wouldn’t touch a 3070. I think 3080 is the way to go until the 4000’s of which I’ll probably skip.

I just wish all these number soups and sub classifications made more sense. 3070 with same performance as 1080Ti…why not just upgrade the components and keep the 1080Ti moniker? Then you’ve got the whole Ti/Super/OC/Twin Edge/insertcoolsoundingname here craziness.

Obfuscation helps the bottom line. Not just GPU’s either.

Yeah I don’t understand any of it either anymore. I cant afford any of it and don’t understand it, so I’m just gonna keep my old rig chuffing along on low settings for a while till this all calms down.

To me one benefit of the 3070 is the much better efficiency.
Yes, it’s a small thing but the better power draw and lower heat buildup of 3070 vs 1080ti is quite noticeable.

Plus with the 3070 you have newer architecture and to be fair some render pipeline are faster than the 1080ti.

If I could find both at the same price I’d go for the 3070.
But that’s just me, I mean the cost of all the other undoubtedly superior cards is simply insane…

Isn’t the 3070 about on a par with the 2080, not the 1080?

I’m still patiently waiting in a queue on a Dutch webshop that took my MSRP for a 3080 back in september. Place 102. Been that way for a while. Are they even making these things?

If we go clean (that is 2070 NON ti vs 3070 NON ti) the 3070 mops the floor with it!
UserBenchmark: Nvidia RTX 2080 vs 3070

But when the 2080 gets Ti then it’s a different story - only advantage of the 3070 is the better price (in a normal world, that is)

UserBenchmark: Nvidia RTX 2080-Ti vs 3070

Essentially a 3070 is better than all the previous XX80 but not the XX80-Ti

But in the meantime the ol’ 1070 manages quite well on fractional PD’s on my G2.

1070s are going for 350-450 used currently in my neck of the woods. I’m considering it, but then in a sane market, that would get me a 3060, so i’ll probably wait instead of burning that money on an item that will be worth maybe 25% of that in a year. Still, my 970 is starting to be painstakingly slow. This sucks, there’s no other way to describe it.

Longish, but interesting discussion of supply chain issues. It’s complicated.

This is just so crazy. In December I bought a 3080 for around $800, which was supposed to be delivered within a week. Which is why I made the purchase in the first place. Still waiting for it. Considering that the shop is sourcing cards at current marked prices, I guess they are not too keen to fulfill my order anytime soon.

If you live in the US and near a Micro Center, I’ve heard from a reliable source that they hand out vouchers for GPUs on Thurs and Fri mornings. There are people who camp overnight, but I’ve heard if you are in the queue by 5AM, that you are pretty sure to get one. The nearest one to me is about 5 hours, so probably not going to pull an all-nighter. Tempted though.

Same here. I quit buying parts for the upgrade months ago; have a small box of bits like M2 drive, 3,600 speed RAM, SSD…but quit there for now. May be well into next year I’m afraid.

If I understood that primer in Just-in-time logistics @chipwich posted (thx!) correctly, in due time the supply lines are going to un-fork themselves and the spice shall flow once more. Thia might take years though, but we’ll end up with better systems in the end.

Was an interesting YT/article. For years I’ve wondered about this system (not just in the realm of PC parts) but, until now, the connection was a bit blurry in my mind, as in, “…I guess that works ok?”. Til it doesn’t.

Years!!??
Not sure how many I have left

I’m hip. Caught myself lately wondering if I’ll still be doing this in my 7th decade. Can’t come up with a reason why not though, except the justification of the costs.

Ah, ha! My doctor will want me to do things to exercise my mental skills - surely I can work this hobby in there somehow. She’s already starting to ask me what I had for breakfast during our semi-annual meetings :).

“Doc, no idea what I ate. But I just went inverted on a MIG 28, then gunned him in a flat scissors, recovering to an okay three-wire with 500 pounds of fuel on board…”. Crossword puzzles - blah!
