Oblivion Remastered Reveal: Live from Bethesda 4/22/2025

grumble, mumble, bloody Australian dollar at a record low… At least I have heaps of games to keep me going until things turn around or it goes on special.

Graphics are absolutely gorgeous, and there’s already a bunch of reshade mods at the Nexusmods link I posted above.

Combat is the Oblivion system as best I can tell, with a weapon in the main hand, a shield or torch in the off hand, a separate button for blocking, and a separate button for spells, regardless of what weapon you’re holding in your hands. No dual wielding per se (though there may be mods for that later?).

I haven’t slept to level up yet, but I think the leveling system is the same.

For everybody who’s new to the game, I believe most of the information at UESP still tracks as accurate:

Also for folks wanting a (fairly spoiler-free) comparison side by side:

lol, I seem to be doing more and more grumbling, mumbling as I get older.
Yes too many games, I picked up a game pass for xbox to save some cash. The downside to this is I’m now playing Oblivion AND Indiana Jones. It’s a grind, but a good grind, so many good games to ignore

Just done the tutorial.

First impressions. Wow… instantly familiar. Instantly comfortable. The inventory changes are excellent, love the instant map access. Character models look much improved and lifelike.

I’m keen to see if the DLCs are in here, the knights of the nine is my absolute favourite thing.

That. Bloody. Unicorn. I showed lara the trailer she remembered playing it with me sat on my lap. We got to the end and she said “oh no, the psycho unicorn is back dad!”:rofl:

This isn’t Oblivion as such, but how could we speak of TES without a memorial to Lydia…

It’s in there. Heard dialogue referring to it in the Imperial City.

Yay!

Funny how little of the story I remembered. Just shows how the motive to succeed and win can muddle the enjoyment of a game instead of enjoying the story that the designers wanted to tell. The good part of that is that I get to really enjoy it anew.

To be fair, i never bother going to kvatch. Never set of the gates until I’m done exploring and levelling up. I hardly sleep either so i don’t level up until all my skills are above 90. I just like exploring and doing all the side quests

Yeah, that was/is my thing too.

I just swept around the whole map with the deal that, if I spotted something, I had to explore it.

So, by the time I was done with that, I had kinda forgotten what Patrick Stewart was on about in the first place!

Definitely running into some bugs/ glitches.

I’m sure there will be a community patch within a week or three.

Tempting.

I played the heck out of the original (strangely never got the DLC, I think I boycotted it because of the horse armor incident).

I remember being blown away the first time I went through an Oblivion Gate. It truly felt and sounded like stepping into Hell.

It was buggy as heck, especially the German localization was SUPER broken. A guy named “Singler” patched it a LOT using the modding tool, actually making it playable before the patches came in. He was a hero, and IIRC Bethesda ended up using a lot of his stuff for the official patch.

Awesome times.
But on the other hand: In my mind Oblivion is still a “recent” game that I remember for its good graphics. Not sure I need a remaster? It is weird, I look at those videos and keep thinking “WTF? The game looked better than that!” (It probably didn’t).

I know if you don’t level up, the enemies don’t either, but does it effect treasure drops as well?

Yes it does, you cant get any of the better stuff. But it doesnt matter as everything is easy to kill anyway.

When you are ready to get kitted out, you sleep over and over again and get the best weapons etc. I save that till the end or when I’m bored

Got it. I remember laughing at all the “poor” brigands kitted out with glass and obsidian weaponry.

That has always been weird/funny in TES games.

Suddenly everybody and their mother run around in Daedric, Glass, or Ebony Armor.

And the monsters also get replaced by harder enemies.

I think I remember realizing that in one of the games (probably Morrowind) when I needed some material (for alchemy or something) that some little worm or insect used to drop. I went to the area that had had plenty of those before, but by now there were Deadras and huge, dangerous creatures running around, and no small ones to be seen anymore.

Yes.

For example, I’m about to redo a quest that drops a unique sword (Chillrend), and depending on my level it will do 5-20 points of frost damage and a weakness to frost between 5 and 35%.

So it really behooves you to turn in quests after you’ve leveled up.

And if you’re into alchemy, there’s also leveled enemies that drop different ingredients based on their level, so there’s that to consider as well.

I fell down that rabbit hole in Skyrim:

“Ooh, I wonder what’s down this path”

Many hours later

“What am I supposed to be doing again”

So early indications seem to indicate the leveling system has been fixed and revamped, and there’s no longer the issue with unintended leveling the wrong attributes.

I’m betting we may be seeing some early testing of mechanics for TES 6.
