Official 8th Annual Mudspike Christmas Flight 2022 Discussion and AAR Thread

Been to a NASCAR race years ago, 96 I believe, It was a blast but not something I would do again, It was at Atlanta Motor Speedway, The thing I remember the most is TV does no justice to the sheer speed that those cars carry.

When I lived in Wisconsin we use to go to Saturday Night short tracks all the time, Now that is where the fun is.

I’ve been to a DTM race once and made the same observation. Also: race cars are LOUD!

Dude, I literally grew up in the middle of that whole world, and I’ve only ever been to one race- granted, it was the most exciting race of the series (the sprint night races in Charlotte). And I’m very ok with that. I’ve found it harder and harder to get excited about NASCAR - for a lot of the same reasons I have a hard time getting excited about wrestling (and because of the same corporate influences and mindsets).

But that’s just me. But then, I’ve also never been to the NASCAR museum.

As a semi-pro motorsports photographer on the side (and semi-pro means I get paid enough to know not to quit my day job), I do love going to the races. NASCAR has gotten very big money and corporate, it’s a fun show, but it’s as produced and managed as F1 is these days. IndyCar is probably the best American racing series out there right now IMO. The cars are blazing, the tech is neat, it’s excellent racing, and they don’t keep the drivers separated from all but the highest paying attendees. If you can catch an IndyCar event I can recommend it without hesitation.

Dear sir, can I suggest to you some Top Fuel Dragster action?

If you are going to come to the US and want to do 1 purely American thing, going to a NHRA drag race meet and watching the Top Fuel cars run is a pretty good one (do it here in Texas, and you can add real Texas BBQ at the same time). They are by far one of my favorite things on wheels to watch run. Funny cars are a close second, they are almost as fast and almost as loud.

+1… and you forgot exhaust fumes that will clear your sinuses and make your eyes sting

Who woulda thunk watching cars go fast in a straight line would be so awesome, but the numbers these cars generate (HP, acceleration, etc) speak for themselves.

Hey yeah… I am still here. Stuck in Goose Bay in Canada but committed to make it eventually to the destination.

For the next leg to the south I wanted to take something a little different so I opted for…

This thing should be able to take some serious cargo and it has also a good number of radial things hanging on the wings. Let’s go!

As the Hercules does not have a landing gear, I had to spawn airborne and slew it to the ground. Or to the sea to be precise  However, once on the water the weird blocks tied up to the floats appear and I was not able to get rid of them :frowning:

Anyway, few minutes and some hacks later I left Goose Bay behind!

Unfortunately the Hercules does not sport any nav equipment besides the compass. It is a pity really since it has a fake RMI on the panel and there are some fake radios as well. But OK, we got it for free so I shut up and fly with what it got.

What a magnificent view.

Some shots on the way.

The plan was simple: fly heading 219M, hit the Île d’Anticosti, correct the heading (I wished I checked the winds aloft before setting off), continue towards Prince Edward Island and land in Bentic Cove near Sommerside. Easier said than done. As always

Overflying the Île d’Anticosti.

How’s the coffee back there?

Prince Edward Island.

Technically on downwind.

Ugh! Not now!

Ice fortunately cleared rather quickly.

Not again!

This was the only spot I could actually see something. I was almost hitting my keyboard with the VR headset :vr:

It was a little busy during the landing so sorry for no screenshots. Here I am safely down albeit a bit further down the cove.

The Hercules is a nicely modeled addition to MSFS and I hoped to put some more time on it. That is however not likely to happen as it is pretty much bare bone in terms of systems, functionality and navigation. The dev dropped a message on the official forum that he was about to release an update so I would probably come back and revisit at some point. It is a unique aircraft indeed.

Those things will turn your bowels to jelly  When my wife was at Coke, she got the VIP box treatment at zMax Charlotte. Part of that was taking us down to stand between the top fuel cars when they launch. Even though I was double-plugged, the sound energy shook my insides and made me hop around like a puppy on frozen concrete. And the fumes, that’s got to be major toxicity for the crews. I hope that they get tested often for all of the nasty stuff they are inhaling. This is coming from someone that thinks Castrol would make a great cologne.

That’s quite an office you’ve got there!

For the next leg from Summerside to Matinicus Island I sticked to floats but downscaled a bit the office.

Dunno why but after one of the last updates of something, my usual way of taking screenshots in VR (via the VR controller) started to return black screens. The last time it was approximately three black screens to one good screenshot but for this flight, the ration went up to something like 20 black to 1 normal :grimacing: So please treat the screenshots you’ll see here as highly precious.

Right after take off I headed towards a thick cloud deck.

The BR Goose is a very rudimentary aircraft when it comes to equipment of any type but who needs an artificial horizon anyway? :upside_down_face:

Of course the sun is shining above the clouds.

As the clouds creeped higher I decided to descent below the deck to have a chance to admire the landscape. And to navigate. Yet again, the compass and good look-out were my best friends.

Getting a bit low on fuel.

But fortunately my destination was already in sight.

Here the ratio of black vs normal screens went to unlimited to zero so again, sorry for no screenshots on finals. Though here I am already down. In one piece

The next leg will take me to Teterboro so I will probably opt for some nav-equipped aircraft and will treat myself for a first ILS landing of this Christmas flight

Great shots, precious as they are!

I really like the Goose and you did better than I did at not setting her on fire.

I did my best though. The ps and ts were out of the green arc all the time :grimacing:

The cold weather must have helped me there

nice progress and congrats to @keets !

and was it the default Goose or you have the payware ? it would be nice to have the same quality for the default, but I doubt it.

The one I over temped, probably, was the payware Goose. I’ve set so many things in fire, it’s hard to keep track though! :joy:

A hop to Teterboro is next on my slightly delayed Christmas flight agenda.

The Matinicus Island is a small private airport so its depiction in MSFS is rather simple.

Approaching Boston.

I fly offline but using the free FSLTL traffic addon. It turned the usually quiet skies into a busy space. In the following screenshot it seems like the pilot has forgotten to kiss his wife so he made a 180 to run back home

The contrails may look a bit jerky at times but overall I am happy with this addon.

Nearing my destination and getting ready with ILS 19 tuned in.

Turning in and on finals.

Down in Teterboro. I have a payware scenery which depicts the airport as a congested place.

It is unlikely that I would fly to Charlotte in one hop from Teterboro so expect still two more AARs before I go quiet

I landed at Teterboro last night and parked at Jet Aviation….

Then you must have been sitting in one of the bizzjets around…
…or you were depicted by the FSLTL as one of the AI traffic planes.

Maybe so! I know the exact spot where you parked on the screen shots you posted above.

I find it amusing how the real world can sometimes blend with the virtual world :grinning:

absolutely. was just reading up on TAF Sling LSA and was wondering how is this possible …

The original yellow Sling 2 known as ZU-TAF flew Mike and James around the world on a 40-day, 45 000 km journey.

… when I need 5 times more time to cover 5th of the distance … 5 times faster :joy:

back to our VFR joyride. those windows are hard to beat.

frontseater : c’mon, one selfie for the record
backseater : hey!? I am here also !
frontseater : it isnt called selfie for no reason :innocent:

frontseater : ok, ok, …
backseater : c’mon !?
frontseater : really, thats the best I can do for now :stuck_out_tongue:

HOT greetings for the people of Ecuador

frontseater : you see, I am not that selfieish :sunglasses:
