Reading this fills my heart with wholesomeness. I think. If that’s a word

Just some temporary pets.
We found them wandering down the road, so to keep them safe we managed to coax them down to our place.
Owners have been contacted, but they will be with us for a few more days until they can organise retrieval.
The grey boy with the cross is Don Quixote (hehe Donkey - Oh - Te) and the red boy is Bluey (In Australia if you have red hair, it the law that people call you Blue or Bluey).
I want a donkey
No you don’t. They can be a total Ass
They’re great if you have other cattle; all my rancher family have them to keep the cougars and bobcats away from the longhorns.
Wait… how does a donkey help against cougars?
They’re very protective, they’re very, very social, and they’re very strong.
And those hooves will fracture skulls.
Though I do need to clarify it’s much more common for them to chase off or kill coyotes.
We actually put them in with our two cattle.
Our naughty little Galloway steer Donald (AKA Burgers) spent the first couple of hours chasing them around the paddock…
I’m sure the donkey LOVED having somebody play with them!
Bluey certainly needed the exercise… At first we thought ‘he’ was a Jenny, and possibly pregnant (see image Donkey3.jpg above). Then we noticed he was a gelding and realised he was just ‘very well fed’
Donald looks like a psycho in that picture. I notice you’ve taken it to show his good side? (He’s hiding his teeth and fangs and I can’t see how big his claws are)
Donkey’s are one of the rarities that “The boss” hasn’t acquired over the years. Even during her “Noah” phase, where every time I came home we had different animals she’d rescued that were unwanted from the surrounding farms.
Do they really eat thistles, brash and poorer fodder, or is that just a ploy to get farmers to buy them?
The donkeys weren’t fussy with fodder & I have heard that they can do well on ‘meagre’ pasture (as can Galloway cattle). That is why they were all in that paddock, this time of year all there is to eat is tussock (but we do supplement with hay).
Donald definitely has the evil eye doesn’t he? Not many are willing to go into the paddock with him not only because it is really disconcerting when he does see you and charges towards you… But that is actually because he is a really friendly ‘cow’ and just assumes you have a treat for him. He is quite happy to eat an apple out of your hand and have scratches and ear rubs.
The reason for the AKA Burgers, is because he is a total escape artist, which earned him the nickname because I once said “if he keeps that up I’m turning him into burgers” .
Hence he is known as Donald (as in “good boy Donald”) when he is in his paddock and Burgers (as in “get back in your bloody paddock Burgers”) when he isn’t and until you pay a visit you don’t know what to call him… Kinda like like Schrödinger’s cat cow, until he is observed he is both Donald and Burgers
This is hilarious
There’s more… Some time ago the wife and I were telling stories about ‘Burgers’ escapades to people at work. One of the wife’s colleagues suggested we started a diary and someone at my work said words to effect ‘sounds like the makings of a children’s book’.
Long story short, the missus did some ‘artwork’ and I penned a few chapters. It never really went anywhere, but I will see if I can locate what we did and post it.
Please do. My kids would love to read that. Lara is laughing herself silly over “burgers”
Agree!
Edit: and thanks for the info, @Navynuke99 !
I had no clue that donkeys can fight that well.
I mean: Cougars are not exactly small and in my mind Horse vs. Cougar would result in a dead horse and a cat with a full belly, so I assumed that a donkey would end up in the cat’s belly there.
Note to self: Don’t mess with donkeys.
I managed to find a hard copy of ‘The Adventures of Burgers the Cow’ and has posted it in the lounge. I hope Lara gets more giggles from it.
