Pimax Crystal VR headset

Actually Getting The Oculus Rift OG made me start wearing soft bifocal contact lenses abut 10 yrs ago…Have any of you thought or tried contacts?
It took a few weeks to get used to them,But now I love the freedom of having them.

Has anyone tried upgrading to the DMAS Pimax Headphones?
I wonder if the upgrade will be worth it…

Thought this might be of interest:

I’m ‘considering’ jumping into the Pimax ecosystem. I find myself wanting a wider field of view than my Quest 3 gives me. The question is, should I go all in with a Super (which one is another question) or a Light? Obviously, the Light is a more affordable option and it would still give a bump up in FOV and resolution. My system is a i9 14900KS, 4090 and 64Gb RAM. I have no plans to buy a 5090.

I run a Crystal Light on my 3080ti 5800x3d 64. It needs fixed foveated, and with that it runs a solid 45 FPS. That is quite sufficient for my needs. With ypur 4090 it should be… better.

The headsets’ build quality is… not as good as the G2, but it’ll hold. Visual quality is much better. Both screen, lenses and FoV are better. Wear comfort is way worse out of the box, but with some aftermarket bits it became quite bearable.

The Crystal Super should be even better because it does dynamic foveation, ie it tracks where you look and makes your focus area sharp while rendering the rest far less high rez. Even the Lights’ fixed version of that is excellent, but I bet that having it dynamic is much better, allowing a far smaller bit to be 100%sharp.

I dislike pimax as a company. They are far too sales focused, to the detriment of their support imo.

Thanks very much for the write up and perspective. That is very useful info. I’m trying to remember how the FOV felt in the G2 vs the Quest 3.

This popped up up right as I read your post, LINK

One other Crystal Super said the wide FOV version had some distortion on the edges but they got used to it. Sorry, don’t recall the channel.

:+1: on the Dynamic Fov. IMHO this feature seem almost mandatory (or will be soon enough). I’m still using the Varjo Aero and that one feature seems to help performance. I’m thinking about thinking about the Crystal Super Wide but based on their history will wait a bit.

Another. This guy, to me, tends towards being very…um, picky…about things. He likes the Super alot, FWIW:

I’m fairly confident I can run my 3080ti at 70+ FPS with the settings I’ve gotten used to on the Super, with DFR. I doubt (based on history) if I crank everything to the right then nothing will get to 90.

It seems like the Super will be the way to go, even if I have to run it at a reduced resolution.

Running the periheral at low res is not a big sacrifice at all. Just make sure to run the center at 100%. I actually like the outside of my FoV being low-rez, making certain things stand out a bit more.

WHOOOA…!
Wait! Did @schurem just earn a new tag…?
But he’s not bad? Is Good Influencer even a thing?

I’ve noticed in terms of FOV everyone seems obsessed with the horizontal FOV with not much attention paid to vertical FOV. I need a wide vertical FOV to have one eye outside on the horizon and one eye checking speed/altitude/VVI steam gauges or target pod pictures. That’s one of the reasons I’m still clinging onto my Quest 2.

I see 105° listed as the official vertical FOV on the Crystal, 93° for the Quest 2 but I also read the Quest 2’s FOV varies per person?

In that case, I’ll have to take the shameful “Pima shill” tag

You’re in good company

I would say that @schurem and @jross both should get the Influencer tag (good or bad is not for me to say!)

I went with the standard 50PPD version of the headset, which seems to have a very good FOV and hopefully fewer distortions at the edges. With the way Pimax is selling their headsets these days, I will have 14 days to decide if I want to keep it from the date of delivery.

Awesome! Which version did you go with?

I didn’t, yet. I meant we’re all culpable in this area at varying times. The Super would be the one, after I get a new PC.
