Pimax just did a stealth release of their software. It is a very good one.

The main thing I immediately noticed is that they managed to make the border between the high res area and the low res bit completely disappear. I use fixed foveated to get steady frames with all bells and whistles going and this just rocks.

Saw some reviews about this. I thought it interesting in that; on my Varjo Aero with DFR I have to concentrate hard so see the ā€˜edge’ - I mean I have to be trying to see it. Only in one or two situations do I notice and it’s very slight.

On my box it varied with settings, but of lately it was very noticeable, to the point of being distractingly ugly. So I’m very happy to see it gone!

My heaset (Pimax Crystal) is now two years old. I was about sick of the sound and one of my headphos would disconnect. It would go on and off all the time. I got tired of it. So now i rock these babies…

The pads were really uncomfortable. I finally cut my own from some random packaging. This was incredibly comfy.

However i began to worry my hair might fall out or i get cancer from this foam. So i ordered a kit meant for skateboard helmets. It was ten or twelve bucks. Really comfy now.

This is a cheap and easy diy. Well worth it.

I had a go last night and it is now Night and Day. I did two hours in the Phantom with no discomfort whatsoever.

When I got my Varjo Aero headset It was a gamble.
Varjo was renown for high quality gear for professionals and the price was accordingly with expensive support contracts. Then they ventured into the consumer market with the Aero. It too was expensive, but within reach and no contract requirement. It had the best resolution and dynamic foveated rendering. I took the plunge and put my bets on Varjo continuing in the consumer market, going forward. Unfortunately, it didn’t pay off - for Varjo or for me…
Upgrading to the latest Varjo Base software I was presented with a note saying this was the last version supporting the Aero and there are no guarantees for future driver compatibility. But I could buy another two years of support for…€1500..!

The Aero has served me well. It’s a great product that has worked pretty much flawlessly and is still hanging in there, comparing to many competitors.

But the writing’s on the wall. The Aero has a limited future. I’m guessing I can use it another year or so.

So, with all that behind me… Pimax, huh..?

That new Crystal Super Micro Oled looks nice.
I need to read up on their gear. Seems like Pimax have matured as a company as I don’t hear much about poor quality and customer support, anymore.

well there are a few out there just depends on what you want out of VR headset.. they have expensive models to cheper models..

I am unsure of what MEta is doing but there are otheres besides Pimax but Pimax has some good ones. I myself would love to get a Crystal Light…. I currently use a G2 and it is still not too bad but I would love to upgrade..

So what is your budget for the new headset, or any requirements for the new headset ie, Panckae lenses glass or polycarbonate any rez?

You pretty much summed up my experience with the Varjo Aero. Has worked well with zero software or hardware issies for several years.

I’m addicted to VR so time to mow some more lawns, swallow hard, and try a Pimax at some point. I only say that about Pimax due to, as you mention, the negative reports I heard when I first looked at them.

Getting out of the business too..?

We’ll see.

It’s almost impossible to set any firm requirements on VR as one must view the package as a whole. I mean, what good are perfect aspheric lenses and great resolution, if the developer shuts down after 4 years like with my Varjo Aero?
So I guess I don’t have any specific requirements besides ā€Must work well for flightsimsā€

I could totally see myself getting a Pimax. The design with different optical engines in the same headset frame seems like a good idea. Want lighthouse or inside out tracking? Get another front and swap it.
The PPD of their different optical engines is…incredible! 50-53-57 pixels per degree..! The Aero has 37 and I think that one has a great image. But again, it’s not just the PPD. QLED or OLED panels? FoV? Sweetspot, etc.

Would love to discuss the pro’s and cons with others looking for a new VR Headset.

just read this review. I think it’s quite good, albeit a bit long. Good info/opinion and thought process.

My Super uOLED impressions after 1 week : r/Pimax

Thanks! Yeah, that’s too much info for just one cup of coffee… But yeah, looks like there’s some good insight in there. Will set aside time this weekend and read it.

@Troll & @jross i want to say, sorry about your luck. You gambled well with a company that was on the up and up. I could have made the same mistake. We live, we learn… But as I like to say, ā€œ1500 euros for just support… I dont hang out in that circle of peopleā€ They probably drive 100,000 dollar sport cars and have a home overlooking the F-1 race in Monaco. I’m more of a Honda driver. My motorcycle is a Suzuki cos I can afford the maintenance. But I digress.
My Pimax Crystal is 2 years old and a bit. It has broken a couple of pieces. The face cover is missing a couple of tabs that were broken over the years. I wish I could get a new one but…Pimax does not offer that part anymore. It makes me question their commitment to SUPPORT. For years it felt really like I was wearing a turtle on my head. It got to a point where I was not flying much. My latest mod with helmets pads has done a lot to mitigate this. I now fly more than I have in a long time. I finally got rid of them silly headsets. I enjoyed hearing my surroundings and not having something in my ear. There is nothing wrong with the system. However, Its not perfect and again, mine started to fall apart. The left headphone just will not stay on. I switched to IEM headphones and wished I had done this a long time ago.
I thought about getting a new Crystal. So why do I not buy a new headset?
Reason Number One: My Pimax Crystal OG still has Amazing Visuals. Seems like every other update takes me to a different level.
Reason Number Two: A new VR headset is a big comitment not to be taken lightly. None of us will buy a 1500 to 2000usd headset, use it a handfull of times and decide they need another one. Once you buy, you are using it for a while. I am wondering if someone is coming down with something better anytime now… Where are you Samsung, HTC, Sony?
Reason Number Three: It all boils down to this. Pimax is king for now in my opinion. They have the best optics for the money. The product is not perfect, but it is the best we have as far as I can see. There are some quality control issues, YES. But this is what we have. The Crystal Super is Supa Sexy to me. I Just dont ā€œneedā€ it right now. However, if my Pimax had an accident I would probably be buying a Pimax Super. This time, I would get as many spare parts as I could.
My two cents…
