Quest 3 - initial impressions

First of all I’m sorry to hear you’re not enjoying the Quest 3. I hear your complaints about stuttering in DCS World modules and can tell you I had the same issue until I started using an iMoshion Quest cable. Now, with appropiate settings, DCS is smooth as silk without stutters.

I found it but the website is on a foreign language… I am not even oing to bother getting a newer cable as I had 3 now…

The limit is in the connection on the Q3 itself as it is only a USB 3 Gen 1. maybe if it was a gen 2 connector it would have allowed more data to get through faster is what I believe was the issue…

I even had issues with MechWarrirow 5 and with the G2 I had none… so I am back with that and it still doesnt look too bad…

If the headset was the problem then surely everyone would have the same issue? I’m not saying that you shouldn’t send it back if you are unhappy with the experience, but there are a host of things that could be causing the problem. With regard to cables, they really are not all created equal. The overpriced Meta Link Cable gave me the best and most consistent performance out of the three I tried.

Exactly. My Q3 rocks. I won’t claim that DCS is a constant flow of smooth molten gold. But when it hiccups it does so because I ask too much from the dated GPU and memory I’ve brung to the the party, not the headset which is just an innocent display.

So excuse me for entering this conversation in Rookie Mode™ - but if I were traveling with my Quest 3 and wanted to Virtual Desktop (I guess is that called Air Link?) to my laptop…I need a little portable WiFi-6 router correct? I saw someone recommend this one and was curious if this would be sufficient? I assume I would be able to connect it to my cell phone hot-spot? Not really looking to online game with it so much as have access to my Steam games while traveling without using the wired cable.

Or maybe this one?

yes I had the Meta Link cable and it worked fine. I had tried everything to get rid of the slight stutter in DCS but no go.

I had tried it and it did not work like I wanted it too, so it is going back, no big deal really I am glad you guys are having a good experience with it. the headset it self was ok I liked the bigger lenses and all,

It was just a combo of DCS and some issues with even getting it too work consistently was an issue as well. I dont think there was anything wrong with it just not too good for DCS for me YMMV…

I played my G2 and it was perfect no issues and no stutter… I don’t know what else to say but I tried everything and had a post on the DCS Forums and read another post with a guy having similar issues I had. neiter one of us found a solution…

Probally playing the meta games it would shine but not for PCVR in my opinion… I really wanted it too work as it would have been the cheaper alterantive vs getting a Pimax it is going to be over double the price I paid for the Q3…

Beleieve me I wanted it too work real bad…

I think it speaks volumes about just how good the G2 headset was/is. It’s a real shame that that MS is ditching WMR and also that HP didn’t keep going with a Reverb G3. I guess PCVR headsets are now in the niche category.

I hope you get the Pimax Crystal Lite and that it performs well. In the meantime, if you can keep it going, the G2 is still a very capable headset.

yes the G2 has a better fit as well. I will keep this G2 at least until summer. I am hoping to maybe get a new headset by then…

Yes very Niche category and expensive haha!!

I think either of those would work for you Chris. :sunglasses: Alternatively you could get the PrismXR Pupis S1 which is quite compact. It does use two USB slots though, one of which needs to be USB3 for data transfer and the other just provides power.

Or one USB C port. I have mine connected and powered via a small powered USB C hub. @BeachAV8R, I am seconding this solution. The WiFi router might serve you in other ways, but if you are just trying to get connected your headset wirelessly, Paul’s recommendation of the PrismXR Air Link Bridge is a more direct route to a solution.

To follow up, I was able to connect my Q3 the PrismXR in hotpot mode at 5G. Virtual Desktop’s performance monitor is reporting the connection at 5G and 2401 Mbps, which is 2.4 x the theoretical max of Gbps Ethernet. Pretty impressive. By comparison, in mode 1 Virtual Desktop was reporting a connection speed of 2.4G and ~ 480 Mbps. I’m not sure if that translates to better VR experience, but good to know that your headset’s connection is not going to be the bottleneck.

Some tips on using Internet Connection Sharing.

  • The PrismXR mobile app has a good step by step guide to connecting via this method.
  • Once you’ve switched your PrismXR bridge in hotspot mode, in Windows, configure this adapter in Network Connections as a Private network.
  • You are going to share your normal Internet connection, which is ideally Ethernet to your WiFi router. This is only a mechanism used to get your PrismXR bridge connecting to your PC. So, go to Network Connections and determine which one is your normal Internet connection. Can be WiFI. This is the one that you are going to enable Internet Connection Sharing.
  • When connecting your headset to the PrismXR via WiFi, make sure to connect to the SSID labeled 5G. Seems like a no brainer, but the 2.4 connection shows up first in the SSID list, and of course that the one that connected to automatically, since it was already configured.
  • Password protect it so that your neighbors won’t be able to connect.

Dang… feeling the VR vortex sucking me back in. What is the list of “must have” options/add ons? I’m going to need replacement lenses (rx) and I’m debating the battery pack/strap upgrade (bobo?)

Hope everyone had a good Christmas btw.

Can I get a show of hands on who uses replacement lenses in their VR headset?

I had a Lenovo Explorer mixed reality and am now on a Quest 2. In both cases I’ve found I didn’t need vision correction inside the headset.

My vision is sharp out to about arms length, then I need correction (and I’ve recently had to start taking my glasses off for reading … getting old sucks. I guess I need bifocals?). I may well be accepting a slightly blurry image that helps gets rid of pixel edges and screen-door, but it seems sharp when I’m in the headset.

I am in the same boat as you. My near vision is fine and I only need glasses or contact lenses for distance.

I actually take my lenses out if I am going to be reading or using the headset.

That’s the problem, I’m the opposite…

I am the other end of the spectrum … have glasses for reading (found i was needing to hold stuff further away, untill reached the limit of my arms ) but never needed any special lenses for VR

I have been using prescription lenses for distance in every headset I have owned. My right eye is a little bit weaker than my left when it comes to distance, so the lenses really make a difference, although it is amazing how the brain can adapt to things like that.

For the last few years I have been using progressive/varifocal glasses which took some getting used to but I don’t think progressives would be practical in a VR headset.

I have a significant astigmatism and am nearsighted. Fortunately I can read unaided and near vision isn’t awful when I am wearing correction. Whatever I am wearing, contacts or glasses, works perfectly fine inside the headset.

I received my Reloptix lenses a couple weeks ago. I’ve been meaning to write a review of them…but I’ll just say they are fantastic. The packaging…product presentation…everything is really, really top notch. Like…exceptionally so. Which is rare to find these days. And I love taking my glasses off and popping my headset on and being able to see clearly without anything between me and the lenses.

By the way…still absolutely loving my Quest 3. The other night I had a long organ procurement flight. So I spent an hour in the plane after arriving just kicked back with my Q3 on and watching Netflix on a big screen in the cockpit. I tried to take a screenshot…but it won’t show the screen I guess for copyright reasons (?). Anyway…it was crisp and clear and the audio was pretty good even without earbuds. Very enjoyable…
