Quest 3 - initial impressions

Good to know I’m not the only one…

Pre Coffee Commentary
I had the black screen phenomena for a while, but have converted to VD and don’t need to launch the Link app. One thing that I remember about the black desktop is to wait a bit, if you haven’t already done that. Like sometimes it took 10-15 seconds to sync, or whatever it was doing. Another behavior was that sometimes the Link launch bar thingy would spawn 180 from where I was looking, so I had to hold right-menu button for 3 seconds to recenter it.

Alright… took almost a month but FINALLY got the BOBOVR S3 Pro Battery Strap delivered so worked on getting the Q3 connected up to the Prismxr Puppis S1. Seemed fairly straightforward but I fought with it a bit to get it fully connected in WiFi hotspot mode and shared internet from the Ethernet connection.

Q3 connected up to the Puppis S1 5G WiFi but ran out of time to thoroughly test drive it. I launched Asseto Corsa real quick but it looked to be in a theater or screen type mode (theater vs desktop) and not in full VR.

Looks like I need to figure some more settings out… but I also saw a lot of folks staying “Virtual Desktop” is the must have Quest app so I guess I still need to pick that up?

Went ahead and picked up Virtual Desktop… not sure if it’s a must have but it’s cool enough I think I’m ok with it. Fussed around a bunch but finally got AC, AC Evo and DCS all to at least launch into VR. Still some tweaking to be had I’m sure but man am I happy with this so far. Finally feel like I’ve got a VR setup I can start using in a regular basis.

Why are so many Quest games so freaking frantic. Shopping in the Meta store today (I guess it is a big sale)…and so many titles are just…ugh…just…ugh…

I DID pick up Tactical Assault VR (haven’t installed it yet) because it looked intriguing…

I’m putting this here for no reason other than a brilliant use of VR in a TV show.

My wife and I laughed so hard I nearly soiled myself.

I was astonished at how smooth Virtual Desktop operates when compared to utilizing a wire, and the flexibility of mobility really adds to the immersive experience. I also purchased a large battery pack and did the same thing, just pop it in my pocket with a USB-C connector, and I’m good for hours.

Standalone games also impressed me. I wasn’t expecting much, yet several of them stand up really nicely. I only wish VTOL VR had a native Quest version, that would be incredible!

Also, I’ve been traveling in Vietnam recently with https://gowithguide.com/vietnam and going fully wireless has been a lifesaver. The ability to play anywhere, whether at a hotel or while waiting for a flight, has added to the enjoyment of my trip. It’s incredible how portable and convenient the Quest is when you don’t have a cable tying you down.

I finally jumped into the cockpit of the Phantom last night… WOW. THIS was what I was hoping for. Everything was clear and readable and was what I’d been looking for. Took a few initial flights based out of Nellis. I had the settings bumped up a bit and it was stunning but I think I maxed out my card and headset so I need to get in and start tuning for performance.

Ok… long overdue getting back in here but ready to start tweaking my settings.

Kinda feel like it need to go back and start from scratch… who’s got the definitive guide for my R7-5800XT, 64GB, 4070 Ti Super with Quest 3 setup?

Using PrismXR and Virtual Desktop Streamer.

Fought with the PrismXR but finally got things working. Using Pulse rather than Hotspot so curious on thoughts there? Things looked and felt pretty good overall but had a couple of huge lag spikes at times so I’ve definitely still got some things to work out.

“Prism”, “Pulse”, “Hotspot”. I’ve been using Oculus variants for 6 years and none of those words mean anything to me. Looking forward to learning something.

Here you go Eric…
Prism XR VR router.

Basically a dedicated router to handle your Quest 3’s data streaming needs.

So help me understand this…my parameters when I’m at home are:

Quest 3 hooked up via Virtual Desktop (the paid version)
PC is hooked up to my router via LAN cable

Obviously Virtual Desktop is using my home network WiFi signal to communicate with the PC. Other items on my home network are probably also using up bandwidth on my WiFi network (my phone, iPad, SmartTV…etc…). Will I see a benefit from using a dedicated router to handle the Quest 3 data streaming? Aren’t I just putting another link in the chain or am I misunderstanding that? I did recently buy a TP-LINK AX1500 WiFi6 travel router for when I’m on the road for a few days…but haven’t tried it out yet. Should I also be using this at home as a dedicated WiFi router for my Quest?

my router can’t handle the quest wireless… (gets very choppy, even in menus)
so just link with a cable, my startup is as follows
turn on quest
get meta link running
click link to pc in quest
start DCS as normal in VR mode
go flying

don’t know if this will help

Using the travel router just for the Quest 3 should help. Can you plug that into your PC with a cable or is it purely a wireless connection?

No idea…I haven’t opened the box. Lemme check…

Awhile ago I purchased an Intel Killer Wifi card (vr double connect tech) and its worked perfectly so far… YMMV

I’m not saying that there aren’t better configurations, because everyone has different hardware setups, but what works best for me is too connect the PC to my router via Ethernet, connect the Prism XR to my PC via a good USB C cable, and connect my Q3 or QPro to the Prism via Wi-Fi. That was after reading @PaulRix’s experience and testing different configurations, including using the native Oculus Link virtual desktop.

I use Virtual Desktop app because it is the easiest to use and most trouble free of the virtual desktop options. And without the Prism XR, I get some warping.

To be completely transparent, my router is actually a Netgear Orbi Satellite, which is part of my home’s WiFi backbone. It’s 6 years old, so I get around 450 Mbps throughput. If I had the latest radios, I know that I could increase the throughput to 1GB or more. But given that unless you are multiplayer gaming, the bottleneck is your headset to PC throughput.

Regardless, I don’t have MP issues either and my dedicated server is connected to the primary router over the Wi-Fi backbone as well. Ethernet to the same Orbi Satellite. I used to carry the server down to our family room where the DMARC is, but the pings where the same for players connecting.

Obviously Quest3 is more demanding, but for Quest2 I found very choppy streaming on the house wifi. But I have one of those Deco kits with three access points, so I split off one AP to a separate Wifi network and the Quest works perfectly on that, I guess because it’s not competing for bandwidth with all the phones and Chromecasts in the house.

The Deco also has a nice feature where you can get the network to scan for interference and it’ll move to a clearer frequency, which I did for both networks to make sure they weren’t stepping on each other.

I was wondering if enabling the “guest network” feature just for the Quest would work the same way, but I haven’t had a chance to test that yet.

Are you connecting the Q3 to PrismXR in Pulse mode or Hotspot?

Otherwise, I think I’m setup the same. I specifically ran a wire (temporarily for now) for PC to router.

DCS worked connection wise, but tonight I tried to run Assetto Corsa via CM the same way but unfortunately, my controls (wheel and pedals) would not function in VR mode. Dropping back into single monitor, worked perfectly. It was race night so I’ll need to research and mess with it all again later.

I think I might finally pull the trigger on VR and get the Quest 3.

I’ve been longing to get back to simming a bit, but a friend of mine who is recovering from a stroke is borrowing my TrackIR so he can practice driving to resit a driver’s licence. A good excuse to splurge on new toys, right?
