Question about an hypothetical PC

So I will ask a stupid question, I might have gotten a gift from my GF and that would mean I can get a new PC. I don’t need a GPU and the HDDs/SSDs… only the case, CPU+cooler, RAM and MoBo. I have noticed the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X as a starting point- I like to start from the CPU…
Is it a good idea?

Taking back the CPU and swapping it with a AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
I think the X3D architecture is more important than the processor type.

For Games, yes!

For heavy multi-core workloads, the 16-core option would be better.

If you don’t know, then you’re not running multi core workloads. This is the kind of stuff that makes you wait a long time for your Desktop PC to finish a calculation. So you would spend a lot of time in task manager to gaze at CPU core loads.

I got the 7800x3d. My Asrock Livemixer board runs great. Weird color, and not in production anymore. AMA.

May I say something? I was in the same situation recently. After I spent a lot of time looking at the differences between CPUs. The end was clear: R7 9800X3D or R5 9600X. Why only those two? Because a 9600X is a powerful CPU for a very good price, and 9800X3D is the best for a relatively good price, much lower than in the recent past.

Looks amazing but it costs a bit too much…

I think I have a Working configuration…

Does the case come with a couple good fans?

Other than that, I see nothing wrong. My personal preference would be a Dark Rock Pro 5 for cooling, but that’s because I never had an AIO.

Yes 4 120mm Fans.
Three in the front, and one in the back.

Re: the cooler - yeah, I had a massive Noctua, but I’ve had a water cooler for a little while and I must admit it’s superior. Especially with the airflow + over pressure that I’ll have with this case…

With the board you have chosen you can still upgrade to the next generation of AMD CPUs as the upcoming CPU’s still use the same socket. The 7800X3D is a very good CPU. It runs a little hotter than the 9800X3D and is a bit slower but I would say it’s negligible when gaming on a monitor.

Something I did take in consideration.
My current PC is running on the same HW (bar a RAM upgrade and a couple of GPUs) since 2012. About time it gets some rest. Will save it as a mule in case something else goes horribly wrong.

Wow. RAM prices really spiked. You would get 64GB kits for around 300€ at the beginning of this year.

Yeah… :frowning: Not very thrilled about that- I hoped to get 64GB but at this point it’d just be a waste.
I’m actually lucky i found it that cheap so to speak…

Great list, I would just suggest saving €100 on the CPU by getting a 7600X3D instead of 7800X3D.
Performance difference is less than 5% in games.

What is the x axis in that plot? Edit: Oh I see, it’s price.

And that you’re a signal user, kudos

Been a Signal user for a long time but it finally picked up traction last year.
Now I have friends groups, family, the org I volunteer with and groups with work colleagues on Signal.

So I’m setting up a Matrix account… gotta stay ahead of the curve / convenience

The new PC has arrived, I fished it out of the box yesterday and cleaned up from the shipping packing (A very thorough and well thought out job) and set up for today’s transplant.

If all is well I will finally try DCS on a modern machine. Fingers crossed!

I know the excitement. Looking forward to your AARs.

Okay, it’s impressive.
I know probably there are people here with much better machines, but my last PC I assembled myself for the Closed Beta release of Elite Dangerous… That was a long time ago.

So the jump in performance is… Stunning.
I’m truly happy. This is a new way to experience everything.

Congratulation! Which GPU is in use? I recently also bought the new PC. I mean PC components, of course, and built the new one.

Carried over the 3070ti from the old PC

Very very decent.
I don’t plan spending more money now for a good while (well not on gaming stuff anyways) but this machine has now power and potential for future upgrades.

 I am genuinely happy.

Yeah, DCS is not too much HW demanding. I was able to run it on my 2019 PC: R7 3700X, X570, 32GB DDR4, and RX 5700XT 8GB at the 1440p high-details without any issues.
