Razbam Announcement

It’s cool, no worries.

I’m not sure if linking this here breaks our TOS, so mods please delete this post if so. And I’m not even sure that I understand the situation sufficiently. If someone feels so motivated, please flowchart it for the small brained among us.

But what I think that is being said is that Nick is trying to protect his IP from being used in commercial products without sufficient compensation, which seems reasonable. It also looks like the community is using the release of the video to air all of their complaints towards ED, regardless of relevance.

Probably if I watch the video a couple of more times, that I will grasp the emperor’s nakedness metaphor. I get that DCS needs fixing. But no clothes?

Enigma happened to be on comms with my squad today. He mentioned the video and the conversation with Nick Grey but didn’t get into much detail. What detail he gave made me a bit sad for the future. As much as I shun influencer-type content I’ll give this a watch. Enigma seems to be enjoying flying WW1, btw. He’s already far more active with our group than I ever will be again. Seems like a good dude.

(After watching) Hmm. I feel a bit…what’s the word toddlers use?…Icky? Yeah icky. They say that you don’t really want to witness sausage being made. I now get it. And while I was able to comprehend only a fraction of what was said, I gleaned enough to feel … icky. Enigma was fun on comms today. He doesn’t know me. Although we are not friends, I’d like to be. But I think with this video he’s made a mistake to the community he has served so well. Companies have a right to trash thier own products in confidence. That’s how constructive conversations work. I can easily imagine someone high up at Apple crapping all over iMovie. It doesn’t mean that he thinks OR he expects his listener to think that iMovie is hopeless garbage. He’s just letting off steam and pressing his case that room for improvement exists.

Finally, as someone who’s livelihood depends on business travel, score one for face-to-face meetings!

I’ve mostly enjoyed Enigma’s content, and to be sure, with his CW server, he has a lot more invested in DCS than I do. I should probably stay in the stands and let those with more skin in the game prognosticate.

These kinds of issues always get frustrating from multiple perspectives. Go to one forum community and it’s an echo-chamber ganging up against ED. Go to another forum community and it’s an echo-chamber defending ED. Then the mix of people trying to be or promoting being an ethical consumer in a world where business as a concept is fundamentally unethical…

At this point I’m just here to fly virtual jets and enjoy my existence before my cells are scattered into the cosmos.

I think we’re all kind of sick of it. The fact that it’s just internet drama for grown men who would rather waste their time arguing that playing ■■■■■■■ video games is infuriating. It’s so odd finding an issue as contentious as this being so utterly vexing that it justifies 20-30 minute long screeds, but no one does anything about it. If a game pissed me off so much that I feel the urge to rant about it for a half hour?

I’ve already stopped playing it and moved on.

While I don’t find much fault with ED, of what’s been made public, they certainly are not beyond reproach. I mean, holy HELL, they love to own goal.

No one’s getting freebies from either side, stop acting like you’ve got sponsorships. This isn’t NASCAR.

Yeah I’d rather smash on a podcast and go fly for a bit then watch that mudflinging.

It’s weird, been away from flightsims for a while but it sure is one of the sim communities that is in a constant state of despair and sadness if you read the forums. Been doing a lot of simracing and whilst there’s a sufficiently unhealthy amount of discussions about what sim is best it still won’t hold a candle with how grumpy and negative people tend to become in the flightsim space.

I wonder how the space people are doing?

I did some Elite exploration for the Community goal Sunday- the game is good even if there’s criticism (sometimes pointless, sometimes more on point) and the usual mudflinging now and then. With my recent addiction to the FPS part of Elite - lots of content there, I am absolutely surprised! - I feel the game grew one order of magnitude.

EDIT: if this is what you meant - otherwise I’m really sorry for the nonsense.

Nah it is kinda what I am getting at, the flightsim community seem vitriolic in particular compared to other sim communities.

Sigh…people being people, magnified by social media…the Western world has never had it so good yet everyone’s pizzed off all the time - over a game?

I couldn’t care less about the drama, but the bit in the video about ED’s approach to creating a ‘game’ (related to the DC and other) made me smile. Assuming that’s accurate (it seems, to me, to be so based on the last, oh 10 years).

DCS allowed me to “teach myself how to fish” cos ED was slow to give me a fish. A major amount of work for sure…it allows me to ‘move on’.

Random semi-related musing…

I’m playing through my own campaign/mission creation ‘thing’ (filing off rough edges; being my own play-tester and such).

Syria and two NTTR campaigns basically done; Persian Gulf usable (1988 version of the Tanker Wars); Afghanistan usable[1]; Iraq waiting for them to finish the map (a lone carrier parked in the PG is all I have til they add bases in Saudi Arabia). Then off to Black Sea for something that resembles the Kosovo Air War…etc.

[1] Flying missions in AFG has caused me to re-write bits of the comm’s code (the way all the various agencies interact) as there really are no defined lines here between side A and B - but I’m REALLY liking this map! It runs better than the NTTR map for one thing (wish they would re-do that one).

To stay in that analogy I understand that Enigma has learned the hard way, that he is not supposed to fish either.

I guess he got frustrated (understandingly) about the slow process of MP improvements and lack of support regarding online play until he handed over his quite successful Cold War Server.

I believe him when he claims ED lacks a vision (other than a procedure trainer).

It’s also telling that the whole drama between ED and Razbam was caused by a military commercial project. That’s were the business focus seems to be.

:face_with_monocle:…and a Very Profitable One at That!!!

I have zero clue about this Enigma person (I don’t do MP) beyond one or two videos he put out; what he wanted out of it. But I get the feeling (from this and other videos) he may have set out on a course where he didn’t, and never would, have any influence over the helmsman…can I stretch this analogy further  ?

I worried when I began that they might shut off the ability to “create your own experience”[1] - Nick Gray. IIRC his words. But it seemed silly for them to do that.

They could be more helpful for sure; having to plant my own tree, tend to it until it got big enough to make a fishing rod; forging metal to make my own hooks; figure out what the fish like to eat, etc, etc…

Their biz model has always made me wonder though:

[1] via ME and lua

he didnt mean fantasy space games … just kidding

Scripting API support could definitely be better. It seems that ED is focusing 95% of effort in modeling the aircraft and scripting side seems to progress at snail’s pace.

This is a shame, because there is a lot of enthuasism in the community to build better scenarios, campaigns and MP servers if we just had better tools to do it. It would be win-win situation for the ED to have community build dynamic campaigns etc free of cost.

It is inevitable that EDs own dynamic campaign will need improvements for the scripting environment also. I guess we are seeing some of it in the form of warehouse system etc, but they could be more open and publish the API improvements progressively (I am sure they have been cooking some nice scripting updates for the dynamic campaign).

Oh and I believe him too. Every word. My beef, if it even rises to that, is twofold. One, his relating of a conversation with Nick Grey that was made in private and while he was under an NDA. This is more problematic to me because the conversation took place two years ago. Two, he’s introducing a video of a private industrial meeting to a wider audience (it’s the first I’ve seen it so I assume others were new to it also).

Honestly, seems like youtube view milling and not much else. But, I’m not one who is terribly interested in watching however several minutes of developers arguing contract minutia, so I didn’t exactly watch. Plus, I have a hard time trusting leaks of any kind as I learned from when WikiLeaks was all the rage. Just like with any network news or government release, the information you get is filtered by whoever has their hand on that particular hose.

I’m going out on a limb to guess it hardly changes perspectives here on the issue.

Sigh, really wish this would just die at this point.

This is one of those “Dont be sad its done but be happy it happened” things.

At this point enjoy it while you can.

There’s a lot of small details in that zoom call that are being overlooked because everyone is clinging to what content producers are pushing out.

Watch the original call in it’s entirety, uncut, and pay attention to what’s being said, don’t watch just the highlights in a streamer’s cut.

For example:
Community content producers and some of the former devs are claiming on sites and discord, that ED is stealing RBs content and putting it in MCS,
However multiple times in this call which is a year+ old now, Ron himself has stated that he is aware that his content contract is for use in both platforms.

I can list several other points the community seems to be blind too or overlooking out sheer attention lapses caused by social media posts and content producer videos, but I don’t see the need, as it would pretty much be seen as me trying to defend or discredit one party or another.
