Owl is great!
Owl made us chocolate cake!
Sing it with me!!!

Thank You Chuck.

Ya’ know
I don’t know. The problem with all those old articles in the series (to include the Black Shark, A-10C, and MiG-21 tutorials) is that they came with custom missions that I never was able to keep updated as DCS World evolved. The articles should suffice, but it was nice to have a mission to play along with even though they were pretty rudimentary
(except for the ones that @WreckingCrew helped me out with!

The campaign for this machine got released with 2.5.5. Anybody flying it?
I redid/finished the training today and had a go at M1 of the campaign
and got utterly blasted lol. Not used to filthy weather!

Haven’t tried it yet
will be on my To Do list

So I was refreshing my MiGgery intending to give the campaign a good hard go now that I have reached peak immersion with the oculus and PointCTRL.

Took the cold start training session and flew it around a bit. First landing was a doozy. I had it topped up and took off again. This time I intended to fly to that place north of Ghelendzhik and see how high I could get it while underway. Man does that baby accelerate!

Then at about 12km altitude, my mach suddenly dropped. Engines seemed to spool down. I pointed the nose back down to mother Russia and started trying to re-light the engines. They never reacted to any throttle movement.

So I deadsticked it, not pretty, but well enough to walk away from it. And here’s the kicker. When I opened up the hood, I heard engine noise. So I retarded the throttles to the off position, and they spooled all the way down to silence. Turned out somehow my altitude experiment froze the throttle at idle!

There was plenty fuel in the machine, of that I’m certain. Russian fuel gauges have a distinct shape. What happened here? Why did Cadet Schurem prang his kite?

Any idea what your maximum EGT was?

IIRC it never exceeded 680. It never went into the red. The throttle seemed to freeze at idle, even when I was back at 500m.

Something like throttle past idle detent?

I did fiddle with the throttle axis settings because it wouldn’t afterburn on the ground like the instructor told me.

Uhm
can you check if there’s such thing as an idle detent/threshold?

Ahhhh you need to press buttons. It’s not an auto afterburner.

Gotta press the AB Enable button.

Not the first time - I think they added the button pressing requirement sometime after release.

I’ve not been following this module, even though I like the Farmer and have always had a soft spot for its sleek lines.

I was determined not to buy any more modules after the F-16, as I still have so much to do with those I already have - and another reason I won’t go into here. I am, however, sorely tempted to splash on the -19 as it’s on sale now.

Last time I watched some YT reviews on it, the reviewers were not happy with the state of the module - has this changed now? Is it actually worth buying at this moment?
I am also only likely to use it in A/G scenarios.

Would appreciate a HU and/or some opinions - thanks.

Worth buying at current price, but it’s not an A/G focused module. It doesn’t have the three 30mm cannon armament as the S version and is limited to 57mm rockets and FAB bombs for A/G. It’s a fierce dogfighter though, capable of going toe to toe with the F-5. It can also give modern jets a run for their money due to its turn capability.

Overall good enough to use and comes with a campaign as well. There are somethings that need changing for sure.

Trying to keep missiles and drop tanks attached while turning was a new challenge.

One of my favorites although, as mentioned above, there are still a couple of minor bugs. The only one I have real issues is trying to tune the ARK5 ADF radio. FM is good, the “prehistoric” weapons system is a lot of fun. Definitely worth the sale price.

(I bought it at full price the day it came out and to me, it was worth it then)

I too enjoy this module very, very much. I would concur what others have mentioned with the addition that the creation of scenarios is a bit limited but possible due to the time frame of this aircraft and the overall time period DCS World basically highlighting. You are not going to pit this aircraft module up against F-15s, F-18s etc., etc., but rather the F-4 and the F-5 variants. There are a couple of SAM systems you can use in scenarios for the aircraft’s time period and I actually bought the WW2 Asset Pack in order to have AAA systems to use in scenarios.

Really fun aircraft. I’m actually working on a mini series of missions for it because I do like to fly it alot.

Thanks for your opinions - looks like I’ll be adding it to my hangar.

Part of my reluctance to buy new modules also stems from the difficulty of learning new aircraft systems from within VR. I know I could do the training missions on the monitor, watch videos, read manuals etc - the problem is that my memory is really bad these days and there are no really good ways to refer to data when inside a VR cockpit (excepting the kneeboard, I suppose).

But I do really prefer “steam gauge” aircraft - Su-25, F-5 etc, so I’m sure it will be fun. My concern was born out of the poor reviews I had come across, but I feel more assured now.
