Razbam has put a pic of a Mirage III on your FB
And in the commentsā¦
āprobably a Kfir after the M-III, by the same authorā
Soā¦Mirage IIIā¦would that be a Falklands type aircraft?
Apparently they flew extensive diversionary sorties, and one combat engagement where one was downed by a British Sea Harrier, and the other was shot down by friendly fire.
So ⦠I am a bit of a nugget with regard to this aircraft. What makes it great. What makes it so great that you guys are leaving a mess all over the place?
Donāt get me wrong. More aircraft in DCS is awesome (Wooo!) but I am just trying to place this gal and set my expectations.
The Mirage III was one of the first of the second - generation jet fighters, and was very widely exported during her service life. Saw a good bit of action with the Israeli Air Force in the 6 Days and Yom Kippur wars, and with Argentina in the Falklands. Not to mention itād make a pretty good āwhat ifā against the MiG-21.
So, weāve got a Mirage III, Skyhawk, and Pucara in the works. When do we get an announcement of a Super Ćtendard?
It gained an excellent reputation in service with the Israeli Air Force. Mirage IIICJ claimed over 150 kills, with another 140 by the IAI Nesher/Mirage 5 variant. After this the Mirages became a huge export success with air forces around the world.
I will only purchase the Ćtendard if it comes with a saber. Style that has been seen cannot be unseen.
Also the Mirage III was one of those aircraft that the French sold to just about anyone who had the Francs. Israel, any number of South American countries, South Africa, Pakistan, Lebanon, Switzerland, Australia of all places.
In addition the the Six Day War and Yom Kappur War, they also saw extensive use during War of Attrition, where IDF pilots flew against MiG-21s flown by Soviet āAdvisorsā in the service of the Egyptians. They also were utilized heavily by the South Africans in their unending numerous border conflicts in the 70s and 80s. Finally they also saw āactionā in the Falklands War.
Also as MBot hinted, the Israelis went all chop shop on the design and created a number of upgraded derivatives such as the Nesher (a āstolenā wink wink Mirage 5 copy), the Kfir (A Nesher with better avionics and a J-79 engine), and the Cheetah (A Mirage III upgrade for the South Africans).
I applaud the addition of historic aircraft to DCS World. Now the big question though; is there anyone out there (i.e. third party developers) making suitable maps for these period specific aircraft? Again, Iām not poo-pooing these future additions, Iām just wondering whether additional maps are on the way as well. With the Harrier coming, these Mirage versions coming one canāt but wonder whether a Falklands map or Sinai map is on the horizon or at least in planning stages. I can hope.
Falklands map would be premature, as Razbam has committed to the American AV-8B-NA Harrier II, which is at best a distant cousin to the FRS-1 used in the Falklands. It has a different wing, a more powerful engine, radically different avionics (closer to a Hornet than a hawker siddly), different gun pod, more hard points, and most importantly to the Falklands bit, no radar.
Iām all for the Sinai though. Mirages, Skyhawks, Phantoms, MiGs. Someone bring me an Su-7 and a Tu-16 and weāre golden.
I thought they were doing a Falklands level Harrier. My bad, could have sworn that was the one they were doing. Oh well. Still, more maps for these aircraft are what Iām primarily looking for in addition to the wonderful aircraft. Youād think Sinai might be easier since most of it is desert with few if any population centers.

As for a Super Etendardā¦not in the short term[/quote]
Canāt be too bad if she goes by such a tasteful name.
That was sure a great series.
