I have had this idea bouncing around my head for some time. I remember an episode where a flyer says to another “They put 'em in a Spit with 1000 horsepower and 8 30 calibers and suddenly he is a fighter pilot” While that may have been the crash course in some scenerios, most fighter pilots would move up in increments. DCS started out with A-10, then you had the F-15C…
For a long time I have thought how this can be done. I had an epiphany today. Fly the Yak-52, then move into the I-16, (wish we had a P-39). Then fly a few missions in the new La-7. While the Yak is not a WW2 trainer, with the right skin it could definitely play the part. The I-16 was not a good trainer in WW2 and its dificult to fly in DCS. But the “7”, ahhh the Lavotchkin is no rookie plane. Familiarity with the other two would help here. I thinks I am going to have a Ruskie Weekend.
The T-38 will be a welcome trainer. Then the F-5 or the A-4 depending on Air Force or Navy. Then you move into the Phabulous Phantom. Plenty of choice after that. F-14, A-10, ect.
I am not a campaing maker. I struggle making simple missions. I am just providing an idea.
I did this for quite a while a couple years back…
I think it went Yak > L-39 > EB-101 > C-101CC > F-16 maybe?
I’ll point out that for a long time the TA-4 variant was an initial jet trainer for the Navy and Marine Corps.
I was going to say the same.
Personally, I never flew the T-38, but I did fly the TA-4J and I’d generally say that the Skyhawk was probably the more forgiving of the two from what I’ve heard.
Once upon a time, we’d fly the T-2C before the TA-4, so maybe the L-39 might be a good substitute.
Arguably, even though on the naval side we flew a prop (T-28, T-34B/C) before the T-2, the Zoomies went straight into the Tweet, so a pure L-39 to TA-4J transition might be considered a good “joint” training path. ![]()
Fellas! Thanks for jumping in! So, im not alone in this. I had no idea the Navy used the Trojan as well as th USAF. WOULD LOVE a Trojan… ill be retired by then lol. I was thinking again, it depends on who you follow. USAF, NAVY…
Every couple of years a particular combat sim comes up but I keep forgetting the name. Somebody help an old man out! It was exactly what @Maico wants: A combat pilot career which required mastery of the T-38 before moving on. The sim was to be based on X-Plane’s platform. Turned out to be vaporware.
Maybe because so much of my early life was spent flight instructing that I now find the idea to be torture. It was bad enough just grinding through the hour of training in MSFS 2024 in order to kickstart the career. But that’s me. I hate ATC too. But for most, depending on the sim, that’s the biggest want. We all have different wheelhouses.
A few years ago @Scoop was really into a helicopter squadron based in Germany. I joined too. The head guy was a former helicopter CFI who quit when family commitments required it and DCS was where he turned to scratch the itch. In order to join the squad I had to fly with him for an hour in the Huey doing confined approaches and slope ops on rooftops. It was a hoot! Maybe AI can achieve that level of bromance, in which case I could see this working. But lectures from a bot? No way!
LOL! Fighter Ops!
Ai Response to Bromance… “Does not compute”
