RTX 5090 vs RTX 4090 -- Disappointing Reality of Nvidia: Almost Same Without DLSS

That’s what I meant. Power as in Watts. Heat.
Not power as in powerful.
I’m sorry, I’m not a native speaker and can’t communicate as clearly in English.
You should hear me in Dutch though

I take it back,

the FX Series was good at 2 things:

  • Space heater in the winter, due to having to overclock it to an edge of it’s life to match stock intel performance.
  • Using enough power in the spring / fall that I’m not just paying the power company for the delivery fees because everything else in the house would run off solar power.

you sure ?

there are many old-games out there with good AI ( not perfect but perfectly playable ).

its the same with dynamic campaigns and net code.

gaming studios just aim for easy money in recent years imo. less techno-enthusiasts more economs. more powerful hw wont change that imo.

like the guy who coded F4 dynamic campaign, went to code mobile games iirc

I’ve been on the longest single game kick of my life: MSFS—specifically MSFS 2024. This game, like none other I know, highlights the best and the worst of AI. “Best”, in how it presents the world so nearly perfectly. In my case, this is done on a console in my living-room. How can such liquid-smooth lushness be drawn with the meager horsepower packed inside every xbox? I’m told that it is mostly AI and some clever LOD decisions. I will never understand it, but it’s miraculous. “Worst” is the way decisions are made in the Career mode in regard to object placement and odd dialog to name just a couple. I am coming to realize that even though AI has learned from millions of gigs of human content, it’s choices will always confound humans. Just as I will never understand what motivates my cat, I’ll never understand how AI thinks.

What does this have to do with expensive GPUs? Hardware is no longer the limitation. Legacy games and the code driving them are the limitation.

At this rate I’m wondering if eventually we’ll get a game hallucinated by an AI based on a single still picture and running at under 1 MB of memory, on a $7000 potato.

Half Life 2 RTX is coming. That should look as good as Portal RTX, same engine.
