Sanity check on a new PC-build

Now we’re talkin - back-of-the-napkin math shows a 100% improvement over my 1080 (non Ti); the 2080Ti was, on paper, 50% higher already. I think…

Let’s see, $1500 over 3 years…naw, 416 hours per year (sim time, average), for 3 years…

good to know, which works with my altered plan, I was originally attempting to avoid “salvaging” parts from my current PC. However, my current gfx card is a 2070 something or other gaming something something bunch of letters. So I figured I could wait a little. Looks like that will work out.

Side note, piecing it out will actually cost more money

Go for it @Mudcat. You deserve it.

You’ll be able to sell that 2070 for some good coin.

I want to know how fast the 3070 will be, assuming it’s under $500 again like the 2070 was. I’m not expecting 2080Ti performance, but 2080 Super would be good.

Here is what I went with:

MB: https://www.newegg.com/msi-meg-x570-ace/p/N82E16813144259?Item=N82E16813144259

RAM: https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232748?Item=N82E16820232748 (64 gb worth)

Extra drive (re-using current so this is just for fun) https://www.newegg.com/corsair-force-mp600-1tb/p/N82E16820236548?Item=N82E16820236548

One of those corsair h100i cooler-ma-bobs

and something to jam it all into: https://www.newegg.com/white-corsair-crystal-icue-465x-rgb-atx-mid-tower/p/N82E16811139150?Item=N82E16811139150

GPU - re-using my current, will wait and see what’s up with the 30xx series after they are out.

Sweet looking build @Mudcat!

FYI, I’ve got my eyes on this new Ryzen overclocking software (not released yet) …

Thanks, I’ll have to keep an eye on it, generally speaking I never do anything where I feel the need to mess with this stuff, doesn’t mean I won’t download it once it’s out though :stuck_out_tongue:

Your case reminds me of my case … be REAL careful handling the tempered glass side panel. One little tap on an edge and you’ll have a million pieces of it. ( saw a guy do this on Reddit)

Oh yes, I see the whole side is… didn’t look at that closely. As often as I accidentally kick mine now I’m sure i’ll bust that one in short order.

really? They’re that fragile?

Or is this a case of rage? :stuck_out_tongue:

In my experience, an impact on the large surface area of a pane of glass, like a pebble thrown at a window, seems to be taken fairly well. Drop a piece of glass on its edge or corner (like dropping your cellphone) and you seem to get spiderwebs at best and shattered at worst.

Rage isn’t even a word in my vocabulary @Rhino. I’m a pretty calm guy.

I was just talking about tempered glass and how it’s most susceptible to breakage due to damage at its edge, where the tensile stress is the greatest. (Wikipedia)

You can’t even cut or drill holes in glass that’s been tempered. You have to do it beforehand. Tempering glass makes it four times stronger to surface impacts but also makes it kinda unstable. I’ve had a piece explode in my hands for no reason, and no, I wasn’t raging.

Here’s an experiment … take the glass side panel off your case and drop it edge first onto a screwdriver bit. Then tell me who’s raging.

Parts came in, case all in one piece! :+1: Although I absolutely regret not listening to myself here.

I can get a grand total of 1 out of the 16 screws in the holes in the radiator. I hope to have everything together by December

Like they weren’t punched out right or whatever in the rad unit? That sucks.

seems that way, like right at the back end of of the plate over the radiator. Hate to force that stuff too, certainly not going to try and ream those particular ones out. I’ll try again tomorrow. I have to take the front of the case apart anyway tomorrow if I want to mount it as an intake. Thankfully the case fans are the same exact fans as the Rad ones.

Loosely attached it to the top for the evening so it doesn’t swing out and bust the side till then.

I mounted my radiator with tierips.

Got everything together, guess i’ll see soon enough if I did things right or not. I only missed putting one thing in right, front USB’s although it’s entirely possible I ripped out the connector trying to get the back side of the case closed. We’ll see how this works out, hopefully I didn’t mess anything up too bad

Right… my turn.

Wifes pc has popped. She’s basically taken mine now as that has more than enough power to run her games for the foreseeable future.

I’m gonna pinch the (I overspecced) corsair 1000w psu for the new one and put a 750 or 850 in the old one.

I don’t like doing things halfway so I’m gonna go all out on the new one and pimp it hard.

I’m thinking Asus 490F or 570 not much in It on price
I9 10900k (maybe a 10850k as its £100 cheaper
32 or 64 gb ram dependant on total price
H150 water cooler or similar
I’m undecided about gpu yet.

Too much and a waste of money? Or future proof for at least 5 years? I’m not a fan of adding and subtracting bits later on. I want to pay for it. Build it. And use it till its no good anymore and then give it to the Mrs.

no such thing

If you can, go 64GB of RAM.
If not, do 32GB as 2x 16Gb so you can expand later.

With the Syria map, we’re getting close to maxing out a 32GB set. So far I pushed my system to 29GB in use (total system use), on purpose - it won’t go that high normally, I flew around with the F11 free cam to make it load up tons of terrain. However, it is possible so be aware 32GB may be on thinner ice.
