I found the pics and film from my military service!
45#92 and 44#46. I wonder if the first one is a squadron mate of your kit build, @Clutch…?

I’ve actually been curious about that. How do the German side numbers work?
First two digits are for aircraft type. Final two digits are numbers for that type.
43+01 until 46+22: IDS Panavia Tornado
46+23 until 46+57: ECR Panavia Tornado
The wikipedia page doesn’t seem to have been translated yet, but I guess you can figure it out:
Interesting. My 44+45 went to the Marineflieger while 45+46 here appears to be Luftwaffe, judging by the paint scheme.
Yours is 45+55?
Also, these pics were taken in 1993, in which year one of the Marineflieger detachments were disbanded, from what I gather in the wiki page, so maybe it had been transferred?
I don’t remember which unit they were from. They came to us for a few days, did some training, put on a hell of a show and returned to Germany. We smiled a little at their turnaround times.
I distinctly remember the last day when they did a photo op with some Viggens and an SK 60 photo ship. It started with the base display pilot (every base had one) doing the traditional Viggen show, which we’ve all seen before. Then off they went to take pics over the city.
We mechs and techies were waiting by the Hangar, close to the flight line, for their return.
The photo flight dragged out and we lost focus and got bored, kind of forgetting what was about to happen. All of a sudden the Tornadoes returned, from behind the hangar, rooftop height plus
this much, at high subsonic speed…! Damn…
The German squadron commander (at least I think he was) excused the lackluster show saying that they train for war, not airshows, probably knowing that we were awestruck by that lowpass either way. ![]()
Krazy ’ztralianz!

Oh yeah, 45+55. Still mysterious how the first two digits work.
It could have been transfered. I know from the paint scheme that green is only for the Luftwaffe birds.
My brother sent me this photo.
It is part of a scale model that he is printing for me as a birthday present.
He was hoping to have the whole thing finished by now, but ran into some problems finding a filament that would hold together for this piece.
Any idea what it could be? (that’s rhetorical, I know what the finished kit will look like)
A mortar round? ![]()
An Estes rocket? ![]()
You are both close. And @speck I have dabbled in model rocketry. I still have a stash of C ‘motors’ somewhere. But are that old they are more likely to go ‘bang’ rather than ‘whoosh’.
On the right track though. It is 1:1 scale ![]()
ha that’s awesome!
An uncle and cousin of mine were way into model rocketry so I got to see some cool things, unfortunately my dabbling was limited to perusing the estes catalogue while dreaming of ways to convince my parents I wouldn’t blow up the house.
Oh man elementary school memories there. We had a rocketry club and I remember buying parts and motors from Walmart.
both are a win …
you just have to be the right distance away ![]()
and its damn lucky that Youtube wasn’t around in the mid 90s when I had access to a full chemical and mechanical laboratory … I would probably not be here, either locked up or blown up ![]()
Fascinating watch for modellers. Period painting techniques on Spits and Mossies.
The first four parts of the model that my brother is printing for me arrived with the Xmas package from my parents.
Can anyone guess what it is now?
