Scout Pilot - Learning the Kiowa

Excellent, I shall be in a voice channel on the Mudspike Discord, we can visit the Rotorheads server. Though keep in mind you need to get a code from the auto-bot on their server to confirm you read a rules message.

if that doesn’t work out we can figure something out on our own anyway.

I might join in too. I fly stick&rudder on any chopper. Haven’t studied any systems lately, so I’d be most useful driving someone around who knows how to

Awesome, it is turning out to be a real and proper rotor party! First one to crash buys a round!

I’m in…. I have all the maps except Iraq. I’m most proficient in the Kiowa at the moment, although I can fly something else if needed.

Count me as very likely for Saturday. Can fly the Kiowa, but really Jonesing for some OH-6A action. :metal:

I am fairly competent in most the helos, (but don’t ask me to cold start a mi8🤣) and it’s been a while since I flew the gazelle or Huey …but would love to have a rotor session

Alright, lets keep the discussion in this topic from now on and allow Beach to continue his Kiowa efforts in a bit more silence

I will be there…!

Another easy trip to the static target range. I think I’m being lured into bad tactics because I’m sure I won’t survive the point-blank shooting I’m doing at the uncontested target range. This time we are slinging 70mm rockets…fun stuff once you get the sight picture dialed in.

One of the funniest things in the tutorial is the statement by the instructor that: “one of the hardest things for scout pilots to learn to do is count backwards from seven…” - because there is no remaining rocket inventory data in the helicopter. You can, of course…just always look out the window into the front of the pod…

You really make me want to get this helicopter! but I already have the Gazelle that I really need to spend some more time with!

I might join in an Apache, not 100% sure yet

its a really fun helo, like a mini apache, but without all the computers trying to fly for you. the APKWS rockets are a blast (literally) and leaning out of the copilots seat with an M4 in VR is fantastic

Last night I combined the Hellfire and Stinger tutorials together. I was actually feeling like I was starting to get the hang of the CP/G MMS controls until this afternoon when I hopped on HolloPoint North for a helicopter session. I was frustrated because I thought I had all my switches set…but I think the one MFD bezel I forgot to hit has something to do with manual targeting instead of preprogrammed or something. (LAUNCH MAN) maybe…?

The tutorial is quite good…with great graphics and a nice, stable shooting range.

And it is tremendous fun plinking tanks with the Hellfires from 6+km away…

Figured out how to designate moving targets. I have a LOT to learn about pre-programmed and mark points and all of the things that would make for an efficient Kiowa pilot…

Next it was on to the Stinger lesson. Some various modes to help you acquire the target and get your nose pointed in the right way. There is no true “lock” with the Stinger at least no way that I can see to slave it definitively to the MMS. So you had better be right about what target you have tone on. The start-up sound of the Stinger is awesome by the way…

As evidenced by the comments during our rotor get-together today…the Kiowa is a blast to fly.

Love the shot of the tank just about to get hit by the hellfire …I am sure I have seen a pic almost exactly like that with a real tank and missile

I usually screw up and try to shoot a B channel missile with an A channel lase or vice-a-versa.

Without a doubt, one of the most cost effective and lethality boosting weapons systems added to the Kiowa has been the APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System). Essentially a 2.75" (70mm) rocket with add on features that make is a laser-guided precision weapon. The ability to carry 14 of these rockets makes the Kiowa an even more formidable platform.

We start out on the range with a tutorial on how to set up the weapons in the set-up page. I’m curious if on a refuel/rearm if you have to adjust these parameters manually each time you take a different loadout or if they get programmed automatically in DCS World…

Out to the target range. I’m starting to get a better feel for the Mast Mounted Sight (MMS) controls and features. Still a work in progress…but I’m getting a slightly better “workflow”…

Tracking a moving target. The constraints on the APWKS are narrower than those of the Hellfire…and apparently you can use the rockets for air-to-air kills if you can find a willing target. I had never used the APWKS on the Harrier…so this is all new to me.

I have tried this on the A-10C, but never managed to get them to connect. Getting an A-A lock with the pod is pretty hard in that, but the rockets never seemed to guide. Easier to just BRRRRT the fokkers.

I didn’t even know this was a thing! Another reason to revisit her, especially with the threat of her going the way of the Dodo.

This morning we head to the training grounds to see the different modes and indications of the Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE). With only 30 flares in the system - your exposure time needs to be limited. I intend to probably just operate the system in automatic mode…although the tutorial does indicate that the flare dispenser in auto will eject flares regardless of the source of the missile (no friend or foe)…so if you are flying around with some buddies popping off missiles…you might be better off in manual mode.

I guess the system sees the exhaust plume/heat signature and I don’t know that flares would really do anything against an SA-2 (radar guided) missile…

In the second segment of the tutorial a demonstration of what a laser missile warning will look/sound like…
