Took a day off work to make some progress with the fold-out sim seat

The profile is actually really sturdy so I’m removing the ply top apart from a packer piece…those legs aren’t moving!

Is the friction enough to hold those cross beams?
I’m thinking that putting a load on the beams that are secured by an offset screw will cause them to turn…? Or maybe the friction is enough?

A valid point.

The wooden/ply packer is attached with 4 wood screws to the profile like so:

I could attach 4 more brackets to the cross bars on the outside?

That piece of wood will help stabilize the construction, but the bending moment is transferred to the screws that join the alu extrusion and the wood.
I would add four more corner brackets, but I have a tendency to over do my constructions, just to be on the safe side…
You could always try it that way, and see how it fares. It’s not to late to add the brackets in a few weeks.

You are right - I can see that.

I might count my brackets and see how many I have left - I want to get on with the other things I want to do (a PC stand and a new base for the Crosswinds) but might put another order in for a few extra bits and bobs to pick up in a week or two. Aluminium extrusion is fun! It’s giving me ideas. Haha.

Extremely versatile and fun!

You could make your own angle brackets out of L beams, like this.

That’s an excellent idea and way cheaper! I can just get a decent length of L beam and I’ll have unlimited brackets! Still need the boat shaped bits and bolts but every little bit helps.

Now, I need to try out this new seat and actually fly the sim…funny how your brain goes into project mode and instead of doing the activity you made the thing for, you’re thinking about making the next thing

T-nut and alan bolts, you can get them for cheap too when you get em wholesale!

Also, you can 3D print your own brackets… Just saying

Another note, I don’t think the chair will undo the bolts if you fit em up snug, I doubt the vibrations are enough to undo them in your current constructions. Worth checking up every month once in use.

I know that all too well, I’m afraid…

My VR setup, just some wood and an old car seat. Would love to do something more artistic like some of the projects here but I’m happy so far

Nice one man, looks like you have plenty controls lol!

That looks great! I have a similar seat and also everything close to a wall. I’m gonna build some plywood boxes to place my throttle and button box in.

VR makes everything so much cheaper (to get the same immersion that is)

Last night I was doing laps and getting rowdy in a Lotus 72. After I was exhausted. I stepped out of my seat irl and walked 3 feet away. I looked back at my Lotus '72… what a RUSH!

The mark of a good race!

@troll So what’s it like to be too damn smart?

I’ll be a good boy and put those extra brackets in now… hahaha

I have no idea… I have just failed a lot.

Hehe well you were spot on. Just the front so far.

So I fixed it. Let’s see how the back fares.
