SimBox NG

Framework…

I have a feeling one day you’ll come up with a way to design it all to be flat-packed and we’ll suddenly have an E-store: Troll’s PitKits.

That name, alone, makes me want to start a business! :sunglasses:

Testfitting the seat frame to the SimBox.
Think I’m going to move it forwards, a little…

The seat back. The upper part will be foldable and the lower part will be mounted to the seat frame.

Riveting!

How about a thick rubber mat in the bottom of the seat…?
It’s the kind you buy at the auto parts store, to line the floor of the trunk of your car.

I got a gel pad on top of that mat and then some foam.
Feels comfy enough. Question is how that mat will hold up in the long run. Guess there’s just one way to find out…

Look at all that Cedar.
Is your shop in the Sauna! :open_mouth:

It’s my garage, and that’s just plain ol’ pine, I’m afraid…

Doing some upholstery.
Going to have to bring out some needle and thread again, I’m afraid…

Before you stitch all that together, you have a perfect opportunity to install a JetSeat in there. I highly recommend it. It really up’s the immersion, especially with VR, and is absolutely worth the money. And it won’t mess up the seat’s ability to fold.

Hmmm…Actually, if the mat is what I think it is, it may not hold up all that well. Depends on thickness of course. I always growth a 3rd part for my car floor mats. I’ pretty sure this company is one that I have used before All-Weather Car Mats - Flexible Rubber Floor Mats | WeatherTech. Big, thick heavy duty rubber that lasted for years in my SUV.

The tricky part will be figuring out the car make modeling year that is the same as your pit floor. That said, they do have a customer service line…perhaps they can make a mat to fit…maybe put a logo on it?

I have a JetSeat, but the motors were really noisy with a lot of electrical whine… A lot of the vibration feedback was cool, but I never liked the pre-stall buffet. I tried convincing the developer (Andrey?) that he should try to change it to a vibration that would increase seamlessly, instead of those short bursts. Don’t know if he ever did.
But the noise killed it for me. Heard the motors even when using a headset.

I wish someone Would make an improved version, with brushless motors…

If it doesn’t, I have plenty of spare material…

Need to finish this…NOW!

Question.
What color should I paint it in?

Yes, bare alu would be cool, but unfortunately the metal has some deep gouges and scars that needed filling. Bare metal is not an option.

So, what colour?

Black? Many modern Ejection seats are black, with brown or kakhi cushions.

Grey?

Interior green?

Black or Russian interior green

I’ve always liked the look of “gunmetal grey”.

What do you guys think of painting it alu…?

Demi-matte black or anthracite would look better than that. Pick a paint that can chip and scuff a bit with natural usage.

Crazy but it could work!

On that thought, why not just clear coat? Keep the look & protect it.

Or maybe that really tasty turquoise the Russians use in the cockpits… I’d have my whole house that colour if given a chance

Because that would show the body filler I used to cover the flaws…
