Adam Driver really grew on me as well.
I wasn’t thrilled when they showed the first pictures of him before Ep.VII was released but he did a pretty good job.
But then… actually the acting is one of the things I can’t really criticize about the sequel trilogy. The writing makes it hard for some of the actors (poor John Boyega) but none of them stands out as bad.
Well… except Carry Fisher in Ep.VII that is. I still love her but that was not very good.
Just got back from seeing it with the family. It was not my favorite Star Wars movie for sure. The ending left me…I dunno…blah. I really feel like they wasted Kylo Ren throughout the whole series. He could have been much more. I was actually hoping Rey would ascend to the throne of the Dark Side. I wanted someone to take the throne.
As a longtime fan of the series, I too had some knot in my throat moments. It was great to see Lando again. And finally saying a true farewell to Leia was nice. C3PO never disappoints and Chewie was great.
If I were the Empire…I would stop wasting money on Death Stars, Walkers, Planet Killing Machines and simply buy a few gun ranges for their Stormtroopers. I mean, just think of how many movies could have been like four minutes long instead of two hours if just a few of those Stormtroopers could hit the side of a barn at 10 meters. I loved the part of the Mandolorian that alludes to that with the two speeder troopers taking pot shots at the cans…LOL…
I’m also not really a huge fan of the greater influence the spirit traveling stuff has in the films. I just like straight up good stories with cool fights…the last few movies feels like cheating to me. I dunno. I’m still enjoying them, but I feel like they have gotten too…complex…
And I sure do miss Han Solo.
All of that said…I still get goosebumps everytime that opening music starts…
EDT - And what was the lightspeed skipping? I didn’t like that either. Remember Han talking about how complex it was and how you had to be careful jumping to lightspeed and all that…now it just seems like a gimmick.
“Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova, and that’d end your trip real quick, wouldn’t it?”
I seen it the other day with the family and I feel about the same.
The light speed skipping was ridiculous and made me cringe a bit LOL.
Yeah, that really annoyed me, and I worried it was going to set the tone for the rest of the movie. ESPECIALLY since everything else in lore repeatedly talks about how incredibly dangerous blind jumps are, and from what I remember, also something about hyperdrive units have a bit of a cooldown anyway? More of JJ’s not bothering to let details get in the way of a plot device (see also: the JJ-verse Star Trek films).
Ok. Even I couldn’t defend that part …it sucked.
I skipped (pun intended) over it mentally until y’all mentioned it. To me it was little more than a montage of short “space moments”.
I’ve seen the movie after Christmas.
The moment I cringed most was the cavalery attack on the star destroyer’s hull.
The rest was… okay, although a little bit too rushed.
I would have enjoyed a different ending, it was to much carbon copy of ROTJ for my taste. I mean the whole triology was about balance of the force and it ended rather unbalanced.
Funnily enough it bothered me less than I thought. It was gimmicky but that’s a Star Wars trope (like Ewoks killing walkers with lumbers).
My main cringe moment was the Rey+Ben kiss.
Sure, I see it was done to really drive home the Ben=/=Kylo dichotomy but to me it was a bit blunt and just unnecessary. Her touching his face, smiling and saying his name was perfectly fine.
Remember that she is also Leia in that moment (she is all of the Jedi).
But back from cringe to more interesting things:
I liked how they hinted at Finn being able to at least feel the Force. That’s what I had hoped for since Ep7 since it kinda made sense to me based on several things we see.
I also am pretty sure that’s what he wanted to tell Rey.
That really, REALLY annoyed me as well. I think I may have muttered, “seriously??” out loud in the theater at that moment.
At least they had the good sense to kill one of the characters right after, so we didn’t get stuck with “Force Diad Babies” spinoff movies. I’m sure the shipping crowd is heartbroken about that though.
As much as it would hurt my nostalgic heart, they actually missed a great opportunity to have really allowed Rey to kill Chewie. I mean, it would have been horrible, but that quick reveal that he was still alive sort told me that Disney wasn’t serious. Seeing what she was capable of could have brought more of the Dark Side out of Rey and coupled with the guilt of having killed Chewie…would have made for an interesting premise moving forward.
You…monster.
I nearly burst into tears when that ship came down.
I do actually agree with you. But I’m not ready for more loss yet. Han still stings too much
I mean, it was devastating back in the old EU days when he died saving Anakin Solo’s life during the Yuuzhan Vong war, which was what I thought they were going for in that scene as well.
Speaking of, the Ben Solo - Darth Cadeus / Rey - Jaina Solo parallel was laid on pretty strongly in this one, wouldn’t you agree?
…or is that just me having read too many of the EU novels back in the day…?
Difference with that was chewie has an actual MOON dropped on him. He went out in the most badass wookie way. I struggled. But I coped.
He didn’t get fragged by a grumpy woman having a bad day.
Dude. Don’t EVEN get me started on how Gial Ackbar was killed.
Just think of the carnage if Quentin Tarantino gets to direct some Star Wars movies…
I’m good for graphic close ups of twi’lek feet thank you very much…
So I’m a Star Wars fan, but I’m not a hardcore know-it-all fan…but Rise of Skywalker isn’t the end of the series is it? I mean…we can expect more moving forward?
You know, he might be directing some kind of Star Trek film…
google it
