Star Wars Squadrons coming out

Towards the end of that video I think he mentions that you can turn all the HUD elements off, I would guess except the sight, and just use the cockpit instrumentation.

That only works if all those floating indicators are duplicated in the cockpit itself.

They seem to be. If you look closely you see most, probably all the stuff except the cosmetic things in the actual cockpit.

I’m still both cynical, and sceptical that this is even half the ā€œTrue Successor to X-Wingā€ everyone is hyping it up to be. My gut says that this will be the equivalent to BF2, with a short (unfulfilling) single-player story mode, with an emphasis on multi-player and coop. Will there even be TrackIR support? Will the controls be primarily optimized around the gamepad, with joystick support added only as an afterthought? I want to be wrong, but I’m gonna follow my gut on this one and check my enthusiasm.

No one has ever said these words before, but, I think EA deserves some credit.

Launch day compatibility with HOTAS, and VR are strong indicators of commitment to the community. curious about TIR as well though.

Heck, Microsoft didn’t even think FS2020 needed VR; early response to the lack of it was met with ā€œwait, you guys like VR? Well OK, we’ll look into itā€¦ā€

Conversely, EA appears to be peaking over the shoulder of the breakout popularity of space ā€˜sims’ like Elite: Dangerous, and recognize that catering to the high end crowd means folks will keeping back with their wallets for new content.

Also, one very old-school ā€˜feature’ to take note of; the $40 price. Also, there aren’t any ā€˜special’ editions I’m seeing. There’s some token pre-order bonuses, but even those are just some basic skins.

When was the last time any publisher launched a licensed, main-stream game with triple A production values, for $40?And only $40; there are no super-mega-collector-bonus editions to buy.

All in, everything I’ve seen so far makes this title seem like a letter of apology for battlefront 2.

It’s amazing what some bad press can bring about for a company…

Maybe. I want to be wrong, I really do. But, the $40 price tag just communicates to me that they may consider this to be a budget title? I know, I sound like an old man, I can’t help it. My gut tells me that if I get excited, I will be disappointed. I will remain curious, however, but I won’t be optimistic.

No, it’s not just you, man. I’m in complete agreement on all the points you’ve made. I’ve already had EA disappoint me enough times, fool me once, shame on them, fool me all the other times, shame on me.

And not gonna lie, after watching the video linked above, my sense of ā€œmehā€ has expanded. I hate the idea that we’re not going to get additional repeat playability without potentially having to spend more money, and quite honestly, I could care less about what my pilot’s head looks like, or having dangly bobbleheads or ornaments as distractions in the cockpit, when I’m going to be confined to what appears to be six pretty small maps with a limited variety of mission types.

So, after watching the latest gameplay video, the impression I get is a cross between BF2, and MechWarrior Online. It’s definitely geared toward the online community. In a way, it feels more like the spiritual successor to X-Wing Versus TIE Fighter, as opposed to X-Wing Alliance, or even the original X-Wing. Emphasis is definitely toward online gameplay, and I don’t expect to see much in the way of a single-player experience.

Well there’s always Squadron 42 coming out for that big budget SP experience!
But it’s only been like 8 years so you’ll need to be patient and wait a lot longer for it to come out. Who could possibly make an SP space game in only 8 years?

At this point, I wonder whether we will walk on the moon again before that is released.

Star Citizen–developed slower than a NASA program.

@JediMaster
So spot on! I’d forgotten about Squadron 42 - that one actually had me interested in a space sim for the first time. I’m sure if the S42 outfit had had the same budget as NASA…oh wait…

I’d like someone to make a list of every AAA game that began development and released since SC development started. In fact, I think there are multiple games that came out, had their entire post-release period of DLCs, AND had a sequel come out with its entire series of post-release content already.

Not counting SW Battlefront 1, 2, and Squadrons, along with Jedi Fallen Order from EA, Disney has actually filmed and released five Star Wars films in that period. The credit list at the end of each of those is vast and show what can be done in just TWO years if you have leadership that enforces deadlines.

Both Total War: Warhammer I and II, and very likely III at this pace.

To that point JediMaster, I’d rather EA actually come out with a 5 hour campaign married to a well built online co-op experience, than promise a massive, game changing single player experience that then never gets delivered.

And yeah, at this point I just consider any of the star citizen stuff to be a scam. they’ve no intent to actually deliver anything close to their promised end-game, it’s just a way to sell laughably over-priced DLC to people. And from what I was reading about a year ago when i checked in on it, financially speaking, the walls are starting to close in for the devs.

back to Squadrons; One thing I’m wondering re that campaign too, is what is it’s replayability? Eg. can I go back and play it with different/upgraded ships? I got a TON of replayability out of Rogue Squadron on N64 trying to unlock more medals and with new ships I unlocked later in the game.

That is so far unanswered, if you have a choice of ships in the SP campaign. We don’t even know how coop works really.

That said, for $40 I think this is pretty much a no brainer buy, because even if I get only 10 hours out of it it’s worth it.

Some pretty sweet cinematic!

Yeah, those of us who remember seeing the commercial for the 1st SW film on TV before we ever saw it ache at that!

I clearly recall them walking into the hangar and Luke saying ā€œwhat a piece of junk!ā€ and thinking ā€œyeah, that IS a junky looking spaceship!ā€ after being raised on Star Trek and others where the ships always looked pristine.

But it can make the kessel run in …you know

So, if nothing else, we got some really good trailers. Battlefront 2 had some really good trailers as well. Around half-way through, I was reminded of this:

Anyone else?

Nice vid. Can’t say I care much for the music, but that was great anyway.

It reminded me of something. A beautiful short I saw some years ago. Paths of hate. Turns out this vid is that. Bad gunship! Bad!
