I worded that poorly: 1 or 2 years ago, when I got the Humble Bundle, I was convinced to try those games, then I flew DCS for a while and now I finally continues those great old games.
I am absolutely stunned by the quality of the campaigns, audio and the way gameplay is connected to the story. It is worth so much more than convincing graphics. I’ll never forget the first time I saw a Star Destroyer.
Especially now that XWA has a VR mod, I don’t need SW: Squadrons at all anymore!
Of course I still hope Squadrons will release with an amazing single player, which I would love to reward with a full price purchase, but I don’t count on it. And any temptation to pre-order is gone now
I put so much time into x wing vs tie fighter and balance of power that my dad even recognised the noise at the lowest volume and would rush in my bedroom and start yelling about space lasers and school in the morning and wasting my life at 3am when I was just asleep with the actual films playing on the TV for white noise.
If you enjoyed the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter, I would be remiss without recommending their main competitor. Origins Wing Commander series. The first 2 (available on GOG here Wing Commander™ 1+2 on GOG.com) have that same immersive feel as the Star Wars titles of the same era. If those hook you in, then by far one of the best space titles ever made Wing Commander Privateer (Wing Commander ®: Privateer ™ on GOG.com) is highly recommended. It started the modern open world space game like Star Citizen. So for less then $15 you’ll have countless hours of dogfighting to keep you busy till Squadrons comes out.
Okay so I’ve installed the Crafts pack and the hooks from xwaupgrade.com and it looks wonderful, but I can’t find how to launch it in VR. Not in the Readme, not on the site.
Tried some Googling but I can only find videos from a “Professor Butts” (sic) who seems to use a list of additional mods/tools. Which may or may not work with the specific version of XWA Upgrade that I have.
So I figured I’d ask around before spending another night configuring instead of flying.
We’ve moved from discussing the to-be-released Star Wars: Squadrons to discussing the 90s X-Wing series games, particularly X-Wing Alliance and its new mods.
I should’ve just made a new topic, but only realized after posting
I tried to make sense of the thread, but it seems the discussion evolves around the differences between new and old… I wouldn’t know where to start or which posts belong where.
I suggest you start a new thread from here.
Ooof, that’s disappointing. Game is launching at a price of $40 though, so hoping that the plan is additional SP content as add-on DLC (which I’m personally fine with if the game launches at a lower price than typical new games)
Also, I thought there were some co-op modes that could be played single player, and played out as sort of mini-campaigns. Maybe I misinterpreted/remembered one the launch videos?
Hopefully Squadrons flies better than battlefront 2. I found bf2 unenjoyable. Maybe I’ll give squadrons a go after it hits 50% off.
Also guys, don’t forget battlefield 5 and battlefront 2 bugs and controversies upon release. It’s not a good idea to pre-order games with EA overlords.
While I enjoyed the old Xwing and TIE games, and I have them on GOG although I’ve not tried them there yet, they had their share of frustrations.
XvT was a waste aside from MP and it was poorly optimized (then, might be great now!) X Wing and TIE themselves were fun but often illogically hard thanks to things like the AI being allowed to shoot lasers while locking missiles and firing them at the same time – of course human players can do one OR the other.
Then I will always remember whole squadrons being wiped out by a Super SD that decided to turn. Thanks to the way they modeled turns and its size, the nose could swing around like 3x faster than the top speed of a bomber, so it could suddenly turn and the nose could smash through ships like a knife through butter.
They had plenty of issues. I’ve no doubt this one will too. The question is if it will be enjoyable despite the flaws! I played a lot of the 2005 SW BF2 space mode, it was great even if not up to Xwing levels. I barely touched the ships in the EA ones because I don’t play against humans and they really provided next to nothing for human vs AI there.
Interesting. Will be watching to see how this goes. Kinda disappointing that the single player content may be only 5 to 7 hours worth. Would be good if players could build and share their own missions.
Only the Fleet battle MP mode currently appeals to me, really.
Back in the XvT days, I turned most of the battles from the EU into custom multiplayer missions… Bilbringi, the Katana Fleet, the Bacta Wars… XWA made that even easier to do because of the additional models that were included in game.
That’s actually very similar to the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. Looks good so far!
I do hope they have an option to turn most of the indications that fill up the field of view off and hardcore mode if you will. Just kind of immersion breaking to have them floating everywhere.
