Starfield (2023)

That is all I am expecting and if that’s what I get then I will be a very happy chappy.

There is a lot (almost too much and mostly speculation) of information regarding Starfield on the Net. Most seem to be cookie-cutter analyses of what was shown in the Summer of Gaming coverage. None of the ones I’ve seen really break down the space exploration aspect of the game. This one does a good job, IMHO. Just sharing this for those interested…

I’ll add some ignorant speculation born out of boredom in a hotel room. Personally I am not much into either the RPG or Space genres. (See how I sold that!?) They promise thousands of planets (or systems; don’t remember which). And when you look up from a planet’s surface, the orb or orbs you see above are orbiting bodies, not just animated art. That seems like a lot of work if space is nothing more than an aether for pretty transitions. Certainly there will be a vast open “world” that lets us veer well away from the story. A fancy 3D space map would be a pretty boring way to do that. Imagine playing Skyrim that way outside the occasional fast travel. I think they know that if the Space Sim dial is turned to zero, it will disappoint even the space-dubious like myself. Asteroid mining? Space Combat? Limpets (whatever they are?)? Orbital mechanics? Atmospheric reëntry? Maybe not so much—would be my guess. But steering freely in open space? Definitely.

Well said IMO.

Since everyone has a (strong) opinion about this matter it seems, I’ll speak only for myself.

I’d have loved it if the space game was as deep as the planet game, but understand why that may not be possible.

I would like some level of ship flying, maybe a little more than NMS would probably be adequate, and it looks like what they are planning from the in game footage.

I hope that they have more than just the map screen for about the reason @smokinhole said, I think it’d be like jumping from dungeon to cave to town in Skyrim without all the sense of scale (now planetary) that makes Bethesda games so much fun.

In any even, Bethesda and Space is too good a combination to pass up trying.

Now if I could only convince my wife to play like @Victork2:thinking:

I really think it will be similar to how NMS was when it first released. I don’t think it matters so much as with No mans sky if the rest of the game is as fleshed out as it certainly seems to be.

I’ll not pretend its not awesome. I’m very lucky indeed. I told her I’m going to play Cyberpunk properly (it didnt grip me) when the new update drops and if starfield isnt out yet. She’s over the moon. I may need to pretend to like that one if I’m honest.

My girlfriend is basically in love with Mass Effect. No other game ever got close (except the very different Outer Wilds (not the RPG) so we will definitely play this.

I haven’t convinced her to try Cyberpunk yet. She does not like the aesthetics she says…

As for space sim vs RPG: the trailers smell of scope creep to me, which, like Elite:Dangerous and Star Citizen, tends to result in disappointment, at least at launch.
Considering Bethesda’s recent track record (Mass Effect Andromeda, the last Fallout game), I don’t dare to hope for something as big as it seems now. I hope it’s a great new game for fans of Mass Effec but with a little bit of space flying / exploration.

EDIT: mixed up Bioware and Bethesda. Both make great RPGs with the occasional rough edge

ME is Bioware/EA, Bethesda is TES/Fallout and also things like Doom/Dishonored/Quake through buying id and Arkane and such.

So while Mass Effect is a good point of comparison for what Starfield is trying to do, I get the feeling it will feel more like Fallout in Space than another studio’s Mass Effect.

Getting close now. And to tease us Bethesda have released an animated anthology offering a glimpse into three of the major cities in the Settled Systems.

Follow a delivery pilot in New Atlantis seeking the exciting life of the elite; a stranded orphan looking for a way out of Akila City; and two street rats struggling to survive in the underbelly of Neon.

I can’t wait to be disappointed…

I’m kinda looking forward to it. After years of Elite Dangerous, it should be a complete change of gears.

I played a good amount of ElDa (a full 24hrs according to Steam) and it just never jelled for me. Maybe it was too realistic…it felt like the galaxy was HUGE and mostly empty, which is pretty accurate, but also makes for uninteresting gameplay.
Sure you fight raiders occasionally and there was all this mining and scouting and figuring out how to navigate but it felt like it was a river a mile wide and 6 inches deep.

I’m a big fan of Bethesda’s RPGs, though. Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4, and 76. Skyrim of course. I tried and failed to get into Oblivion, but this seems like it will be more like “Fallout in space” minus the tongue-in-cheek Vault Boy things so I’m hopeful.

Bugs? I’m sure there will be but I figure I’m in for the long haul.

When you consider that 377GB of used space on my C Drive is DCS, I guess 130GB isn’t too bad?

My biggest dilemma is that I now only have two weeks to finish Baldur’s Gate 3. Time to tell the missus that she needs to throw away my ‘game timer’, stock up on coffee and mug some ADHD kid for their Ritalin…

Being Bethesda, I’m guessing the price will be north of £50

Well, after pre-installing Starfield on my Series S, the console is reporting 165GB of free space remaining. Hopefully that’ll be enough for Forza Motorsport in October.

You probably know this, but for any readers: SSDs work best with 20-25% free space. With less than 5% available space, performance tends to drop harshly. So don’t wait with upgrading or cleaning until the last byte is filled.
SSDs move data around constantly to spread the write load and they need space to do that (compare to a “rush hour” puzzle)

Wife pre-ordered it last night and booked the grandparents to babysit. A suspicious amount of beer turned up as well, my favourite lager…I’m assuming she is a little excited as she is a bethesda-holic
