So on a whim this morning I tried getting the updated Total Air War 2.0 mod working and ran into a loop of problems that I can’t figure out. The install process seems to go fine until I get a crash of the installer…but things seem to proceed normally. Perhaps I could get things working if I could get the Application Compatibility Toolkit to work…but I don’t understand how to launch that despite having read the manual addendum. I’m feeling a bit clumsy…and it reminds me of the old days of PC sims where I spent more time configuring than playing…
Nuts. Still getting the same DirectInput error on launch… I’m gonna have to give up. Burned two hours on this this morning for something that tugs at me out of nostalgia more than anything…
I had also that problem but after un-plug HOTAS Warthog and plug-in old USB Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 (joystick) everything was ok. If I remember well the problem occurred when HOTAS and the joystick were connected both.
Some early WIndows flight sims might have trouble with controllers having more than 32 buttons. IIRC Joint Strike Fighter and Enemy Engaged AH and CH (vanilla versions) had this issue. Even if your stick doesn’t have that many buttons it still can have “virtual” buttons. In my case I had this issue with VKB Gladiator NXT, to resolve it I had to limit the number of buttons to 32 in the stick config software.
I really would like a TAW 2024…
Just the same game, with VR and modern graphics…maybe just a bit of realism more in the Flight model department…
With Fyble F-22,F-35 and Ef-2000 like the good old TFX
Manual aerial Refueling, training mission. Look to flying boom and legend DID (Digital Image Design). F-22 TAW 2.30, nostalgia mod enabled = original DID 1998 graphic.
This game still holds up really well, even in its vanilla form. I’ve been recently playing it with the help of nGlide (3dfx wrapper) and a hack by Formski that lets you use Track IR (the game originally supperted Headgear VR).
I’m currently working on increasing my pilot rank to get access to more demanding missions, at first you only have access to the ones in friendly territory so only CAPs and escorts for refuellers, transports and AWACS. Yesterday had my first deep strike. Lost my escorts and wild weasel flights but we got the job done.
It’s a great alternative to Falcon 4 which is more demanding in regards to avionics complexity. Its dynamic campaign may be less intricate (no ground war), but still can be a lot of fun and it’s really easy to get into.
Here’s some footage from the start of the campaign, I will probably make more videos the further I go into it.
My result, the hardest campaign in the whole TAW, played on hard difficulty is:
PS: probably I’m one of few people around the world who successfully finished it.
Nice, I’m still learning how to actually play the dynamic campaign. I mostly played F-22 ADF with the scripted missions. Only now diving properly into TAW.
