The Essential Books Thread

Just arrived today (2021 updated version.) Going to be good for some mission making details when the Marianas map arrives.

I find it hard to believe this hasn’t cropped up in this thread yet :

“Samurai! The Personal Story of Japan’s Greatest Fighter Pilot (English Edition)” by Saburo Sakai, Martin Caiden, Fred Saito.

Samurai! - Kindle

Absolutely rivetting read.

Just arrived today. Extremely detailed and lots of information. Also, plenty of color profiles, love those color profiles of the aircraft!

Nice! I had to buy a new copy of “Dune,” as my dad misplaced the copy I read in high school.

Currently reading Low Level Hell about the boys with the big brass cohones tearing up VietNam in their loaches. It is excellent.

So how does the Kiowa compare to the OH-6?

One of my all time favorites as well. Been a while since I read it but I remember glued to each chapter.

Yup, at times rivetting like a well written thriller, then hilariously funny and a couple paragraphs later sheer horror. It’s a great read, and the man is pretty upbeat through all of it, almost gung ho.

Contrast this with Chickenhawk, which also has helicopters, humor, horror, etc but ends up leaving more of a bitter aftertaste about the whole thing.

I love both those books - agree with your tone assessment. I guess the Chickenhawk chap ended up in the doldrums a bit so it’s probably understandable that the tone is a bit like that.

Another good one but lacking the polish of LLH and Chickenhawk is “Guts and Gunships”. Imagine your uncle telling war stories on the porch after a few beers. It reads like that.

We discussed Low Level Hell a couple of months ago. But in case anyone missed it, author Hugh Mills is interviewed on the podcast of the same name (though unrelated). The interview is a perfect addendum to the book.

Snake Pilot by Randy Zahn is another excellent read of the helo war in Vietnam.

I must have been ZX81 royalty then with my brick like 16K Memory block (that needed a strip of blu-tack to hold it in place)

Was aware of the ZX81 and Commodore VIC20 and 64 but they were before my time so not something I have really paid much attention to. Reminds me of another book called Accidental Empires from decades back but that didn’t cover these gaming classics. Similar to that reading this is how a lot of the characters and early technologies were intertwined.
