The Essential Books Thread

Been getting back into Science Fiction and my brother recommended me this book. I got it on Christmas Eve and am already halfway though it. I cannot put it down. Superbly written stuff on world building. I highly recommend.

Well finished the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Did not expect the ending to go the way it did. Now it’s on to the sequel starting tonight.

Just finished Raven One in preparation for flying through the DCS campaign. Utterly spectacular read. I cannot heap enough praise on it.

100% agree! I’m not much on fiction but this one, yeah, good. One of the best since Red Storm Rising IMO.

I didn’t think of that comparison. But you are totally correct. It was nail biting stuff. Loved it.
Are the next books sequels to this or standalone stories?

Sequels, and for literary quality I’d actually rate them above Red Storm. As awesome as the Tu-22M and F-19 stuff was, the romance on Iceland was cringeworthy. Miller’s character work is quite a bit better imo.

Absolutely. Worst part.
As for sequels I will be getting the next one as soon as my audible token refreshes.

If you enjoyed Red Storm Rising have you read
the sixth battle by barrett tillman
More aviation/Naval Aviation focus (Though I also enjoyed the parts with the SAA Mirage F1s) and no cringy romance!

Definitely sequels. In my honest opinion the second one definitely suffered from a sophomore slump, and there was a lot of personal narrative that didn’t really add much to the story, or seem to go anywhere. The third book though, I thoroughly enjoyed- even though I wish we’d gotten a bit more of the non-aviation side of the house.

I really like Tillamns works in general, I’ve worn out 2 copies of Warriors since I first read it as freshman in HS back in the 90’s. I probably should get the kindle version so I can keep an intact one on my shelf.

Yes both my “Sixth Battle” and “Warriors” are looking a bit tattered after many re-reads

I know that @wheelsup_cavu and others have mentioned this book. Found a nice reimagined library copy on Amazon for a reasonable price.

I added this book to my collection today.
(I hope there is a P-38 for DCSW or MSFS2020 soon)

Yeah I know. It reportedly isn’t even bad but I don’t fly planes without clickable cockpits anymore.

In the clickable cockpits defense, I’ve never met a real life one with a mousable cockpit for anything other than the FMS  Just a little friendly ribbing, plenty of virtual sky for all types.

Nice, I just recently finished this one from Tom. I really like the history of exotic air conflicts

Anyone here ever read any of Jack Carr’s stuff? The guy is sharp as a tack. Iconic SEAL.

Def want to get his books now.
