Top Gun: Maverick Trailer

Yet, it would be a hell of a morale boost for the country everyone if it were available via streaming. Sort of what we all need right now, but probably not going to happen.

That would eliminate them from any Oscar consideration. Probably not much of an issue for the best picture nomination but it could impact musical scores and costume categories.

I mean… If we have to start thinking about Top Gun movies as Oscar worthy, c’mon… Seriously?

Top Gun was not the only movie that might be impacted nor the only one mentioned in @B12’s post.
Plus it is not all that our of the realm of possibility considering that the original Top Gun did actually win an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song.

Winner Oscar

Best Music, Original Song
Giorgio Moroder (music)
Tom Whitlock (lyrics)

For the song “Take My Breath Away”.

Plus there have been a few Academy Awards given to the Bond series.

In fact, the last solo Oscar for special effects (before they all were awarded to teams of people) was for one of the 60’s Bond films.

I mean, it was the 80’s, and Berlin had pretty much the perfect summer movie power ballad. Because America.

EDIT: On a totally unrelated note, I just reinstalled GTA Vice City.

Last Saturday in a rare moment of not having the kids jumping all over me, I collapsed in a chair in our den and went to YouTube TV. Top Gun was in my feed, so I thought, “Haven’t watched this in about a decade. Won’t last long due to commercials.” It was in HD and through our modest home theater system. I was sucked in like standing in front of a Tomcat intake. From the first few beats of the intro, this opening scene is simply one of the best ever. And other than some of the pilot’s overplayed arrogance, the movie holds up really well IMO.

In our house we refer to this film, simply as “The Movie”…

It also hits a sweet spot. Women I know seem to kinda like it because of the dudes and the love stuff, while men tend to like the plane and fighting stuff.

Appealing to both men and women is the hallmark of most extremely successful movies. yep

Yes, appealing to only 50% of the population is an automatic limiter!

I only have it on DVD, I figured when the sequel comes out I’ll get the inevitable double feature with both in 4K.

Remember “Tears of the Sun” - the title sounds like a Chick-Flick; it isn’t. …I tried to get the wife to see it when we were dating, but she figured it out.

There were some Great F/A-18 scenes in that one.
