Ok, I all but left the flight sims world a little over a decade ago and have been sim racing primarily in my gaming time. Having since come back into the flight sims fold, I still plan on sim racing regularly so my rig needs to be dual purpose.
I tried going VR due to space constraints, but doing it on a budget as been tough. Have an HP Reverb G2 and it’s so close to great but has required another new PC upgrade and it just doesn’t look as good as I need compared to panels. I’ve since gone to a 34" UW 1440p for the main gaming rig, and though it’s a budget panel, I’ve been really happy with it.
I’ve got head tracking going with OpenTrack +AITrack using a Login Webcam and it’s great with sim racing (as I only use side to side viewing) and “ok” in flight sims. A lot more finicky trying to setup for smooth operations and viewing angles, etc.
I’m thinking of going triple screen setup but due to space, I’m limited to 27"-32" sized screens and it seems like 27" 1440p 165Hz IPS is what I should be looking at (price/performance ratio) as a sweet spot for sim racing. Anyone running a similar setup and does it work for both flying and racing for you?
*I have a 24" and 27" LG 1080p 120Hz(minimum) panels currently available as well, but the 32" REALLY needs 1440p as a bare minimum I think.
Would appreciate any insight and feedback while I try to work through my pit setup and get into that Phantom regularly… thanks!
Since when I got into VR simming I can’t imagine going back to 2D. I understand it is a pricey choice but perhaps there’s (second hand?) solutions that would not break the bank?
Check for instance @BeachAV8R thread about his Quest 3 here
I can say that the ultrawide combo with head tracking works solid for me with a whole lot hassle that VR brings. I think going triples will be about perfect for my current situation on the sim racing side. Getting it to work for flight sims, especially on the smaller panels is my bigger concern.
Appreciate the comment and link, I’ll revisit Beach’s thoughts and others as I continue working through things.
Honestly, I just upgraded the other way. Went from 3×24" 1080p to just what you have, 34" UW QHD. Admittedly one of the reasons behind it was that I didn’t have the space anymore. Three screens at 1080p was more taxing on the system than the current QHD screen, which makes sense as the set-up has to deal with ~2 million extra pixels. You also don’t have to deal with bezels, relative distortion and fisheye effects on the UW compared to the triple monitor. You do get good periphial view in return, of course. I also had it set up so the MFD displays were on the outer monitors so it was much easier seeing what was going on on them.
I know opentrack and AI-track can struggle a bit in the vertical and tuning the axis can be painstaking. I found TrackIR works better at this (but I lost the clip when I moved…). Alternatively, you could also consider setting up some snapviews to view harder-to-see cockpit elements and viewing angles.
