UBOAT is also going VR! The port to VR is being done by another studio. Curious to see how this one turns out.

I bought this today, what a pleasant surprise only 7+ Gb installed and it looks nice too. I need to get a handle on the micro management but it feels very silent hunter 3

Yes…I Agree…It does have that SH III vibe

Thanks for the info. Checking it out. WWII Sub sims have always been a fav. Man does not live on flight sims alone

I’ve been watching this thread for a while and finally folded and bought it on sale today. It was $13 and will give me something to play when I’m on the road on my laptop. Can’t wait to get into it, thanks!

It’s a steep learning curve, lots of micro management

I keep wishing for a mod that basically turns this game into SHIII (at least in terms of having a more ‘high level’ of managing)

Feel a little guilty saying that, as of course the whole ship cross-section cutaway/managing all the crew aspect is unique and something I’m sure they worked hard on but I just can’t get into it.

I keep reinstalling it though as everything else about what they’re doing with the campaign is great.

This game is awesome! I played it for a few hours last night and couldn’t put it down, wound up staying up way too late with it…

It’s very much like playing Das Boot made into a sim.

I’m very much enjoying this game. Played a few hours today while the kiddo was away, and attacked a large convoy for the first time.

I made my first attack at the rear, which drew the escorts from the front to behind the convoy hunting for me. Sank two merchants, then ran silent and deep, evading two destroyers and several corvettes. Successfully got away, then surfaced and ran hard to get around and ahead of the convoy. Once I saw that the entire escort had left their stations and were still back several miles hunting me, I surfaced and engaged with my deck gun and flak, sinking several more without opposition.

At this point I got too comfortable with my Turkey shoot, and an armed merchant ship caught up with me and started putting rounds into my conning tower. I ordered a crash dive, but the last round took out my skipper, who was a level two veteran. :expressionless:

By then the escorts caught up again and began depth charging as I dove to maximum depth and escaped. Running the boat with only 4 (very tired) officers was much more of a handful, and several sailors panicked. Two suffered heart attacks as well. I eventually made it back with only 200km of fuel reserves remaining and sent my crew on vacation!

Well - I bought it, yet to get a chance to play…however, I did get inspired by submarines and downloaded Ice Station Zebra by Alistair MacLean as an audiobook from Audible. Quite enjoying it, it’s been some 15 years when I last read it

So it seems that attacking the rear of the convoy, drawing the entire escort package off, and then running hard to flank and overhaul the convoy on the surface is a consistently workable tactic. So far, once the escorts fully commit, they don’t seem to be able to catch back up with the convoy (at least for a sufficient period of time), leaving them completely unprotected. I’ve managed to sink several convoys this way at night, mostly using my Flak gun, saving my 8.8cm deck gun for the big ones.

Obviously in real life, the convoy would have zig-zagged to keep speed up but still allow the escorts to rejoin or something, but the game doesn’t seem to be that smart yet.

Is it accurate that a Uboat on the surface could easily outrun a destroyer chasing it? I had the idea that they were slow by ship standards.

ETA- A uboat can definitely not outrun a destroyer. Those were corvettes, and not nearly as much of a threat as a destroyer is.
Just wanted to correct my lack of naval knowledge, after encountering a real destroyer and getting spanked.

And convoy ships do zigzag after being alerted to the presence of a sub, often breaking up into different elements and scattering beyond reach.
