C-101CC Training Mission 08

For training mission 08 we just head to the nearby range to do some bombing practice. Rockets and guns are pretty easy to walk onto targets…whereas bombing seems to require a bit more practice.

UKR-373

UKR-372

I flew this mission a couple of times. Once with training bombs and once with 250kg low drag bombs. I couldn’t get the bomb scoring script portion of the mission to work correctly - I couldn’t get the distance scoring…so all of it was done visually.

On the way to the range with a load of eight BDU practice bombs…

Rolling in on the target range…

I eventually settled on a 100 mil depression angle for the sight to give a close approximation of impact at relatively shallow dive angles (around 20 degrees)…

Pretty good hits…

Another set of good hits…

On the second trip to the range I took the real bombs…they seemed to tend to sail long so I adjust my aim point to correct…

The next few passes were much better…

Pretty satisfying…

If you release singles instead of pairs you will have to roll in a ton of aileron trim to fly level…so be aware the plane will want to snap back on the second and fourth bomb releases…

Really enjoying the 101CC…such a fun plane to fly…

Those sure are big bombs on a small plane…!

As long as you append to that “…but to the NRO satellite currently sailing by 1000 miles above, it was barely a smudge on the lens…” you’ll be fine.

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 01

With C-101EB and CC training complete - we will do the same thing we did in the L-39 and take our training to the battlefield. The included 101CC campaign is an interesting low-grade conflict that will allow us to explore the combat capabilities of the C-101 and further get us along on our path to becoming an Ukrainian F-16 pilot.

This campaign could kind of be combined with the L-39 campaign I flew in that it occurs in the same area and under a similar premise…

Our first flight is an IFR ferry flight from Vaziani to Batumi for maintenance. This is an effort to keep the airplanes combat ready…

UKR-394

As usual with AvioDev products…the mission is well briefed and events unfold as planned as long as you stick to the plan…

The briefing images and text give you all the information you need. Here we are setting up the VOR to intercept the outbound course from Vaziani. We have several turn points during the route so we will have to pay careful attention to our VOR and NDB navigation…

On the climbout - looks like a clear winter day…but with fog lurking on the coastal plains…

As a nice touch…neither the NS430 GPS nor the F10 map views allow for finding your position…so it is all dead reckoning, VFR flight tracking, or IFR radios to find your position and stay on course…

Taking off and heading out to the northwest we fly down the same valley and over the lands contested in the L-39 campaign…many of the landmarks are familiar…

At the assigned 15,000’ with the flight director in NAV and ALT capture modes. This plane would be absolutely a dream if it also had an autopilot. As it stands, it is probably my favorite IFR platform in DCS World by far. It is just so familiar to me…so I’m biased…

Our course will eventually take us down to Batumi where low IFR clouds cling to the coastline…

We tune in the NDB at Batumi to give us course guidance and an indication on when to commence our turn outbound on the ILS. After flying outbound, we will perform a procedure turn to establish inbound on the ILS…

After completing the procedure turn we are at the published inbound intercept altitude, configured for the approach…waiting for the glideslope flag to go away and track the glideslope down…

At 2000’ the radar altimeter comes alive…here we are “on and on” (loc and g/s) with a stable descent rate…good speed and with 200’ decision height armed on the ADI.

At 200’ I just barely see the trees skimming by. This being a combat mission…we press on for a beat or two and the runway lights come into view…

On the ground safely. This is a fantastic non-combat mission that will challenge your IFR understanding and your aircraft control.

Our first combat mission of the campaign is a quick scramble as the enemy has sent forward an Mi-8 to shoot up our base…

UKR-415

We do a quick startup and skip a bunch of steps in order to get out of the blocks… As we taxi I arm up the weapons and watch the helicopter rounds impact around the parking area…

The low-level Mi-8 is a bit of a challenge to hit without plowing into the trees…

Zipping past I see the Mi-8 has taken some damage…

After a few passes I get enough rounds in to take him down…after missing with a missile…

Mission accomplished…

Hi @BeachAV8R, are you flying in VR? How are you taking screenshots?

The VR performance in DCS improved quite a bit lately (native OpenXR and multi thread support) :+1:

They’re called missiles, not hittiles, aren’t they?

Yes…I’m flying in VR. I’m just taking screenshots from the VR monitor on…the monitor…

I blame my seeker locking on a squirrel nest in the trees. We were very low…

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 03

Our third mission in the campaign I assume is related to the helicopter attack on our base. We will be flying 60 miles north into the mountains to take out the enemy FARP.

As always…AvioDev provide a great mission briefing with specific details…

I’m facing some challenges with the view system since upgrading to 2.9.x I guess…or maybe there are view constraints set by the mission designer, but I had no F-key views other than one external camera that wouldn’t rotate like they normally do. I’m not sure what is going on…so the screens for this one aren’t the greatest…

Our loadout consists of four rocket pods and the cannon…

We dial in the 358 degree radial on the VOR and swap back and forth to get TACAN range to get us to the target area…

Once in the vicinity of the target…we call on the radio (F10 menu) to have our spotter put smoke onto the target. The high mountains and low, cloud filled valleys are a tough environment for the anemic C-101 to operate in at heavy weights…

We spot the red smoke and roll in for a rocket pass…

Enemy AAA arcs up…the C-101 isn’t the most agile fighter in the world…so keeping constant movements helps keep the AAA from hitting…

…until it doesn’t… A couple of rounds plink off the aircraft and I get a master caution and see that my inverters have failed…which also failed the ADI, airspeed, and a few other items. The standby attitude indicator still works…and more importantly, the engine is still running fine…

Meanwhile…my wingman has managed to not be maneuverable enough in the mountains and has run his aircraft into one of the surrounding mountain peaks…

Coming back around some rockets land in the FARP and put enough damage into the helicopters that we are awarded success…and a secondary mission…

Climbing out from the attack runs is a perilous affair as the aircraft is on the verge of stalling during the maneuvering. The thin air and poor engine performance require careful energy management…

A truck is trying to escape the area and we ordered to take it out…a combined gun and rocket run does the job and we are cleared back to base…

This is a great mission reminiscent of one of the old Ka-50 missions that I remember where you had to attack a high altitude target area…and the Ka-50 struggled with icing and altitude and poor performance. This mission will have you concentrating on the flying first…the weapons employment second… A really great design that fits well with the capabilities (or lack thereof) of the C-101CC…

Ugh, nothing was more frustrating than struggling to get that Ka-50 up high where it didn’t want to go. :unamused:

I still hate the Mount Elbrus rescue mission in the Mi-8 to this day.

You obviously didn’t go to a Rapier AD Regt - they insist on calling Rapier hittiles!

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 04

Looks like we get a fun convoy attack mission for this mission. We get a nice briefing with the pertinent details…

UKR-450

Again…due to view constraints my screen aren’t going to be too great. We take up the VOR radial to the approximate location then start scanning the road between villages…finally spotting the moving column…

We roll in for a rocket run… It is actually best to just go ahead and unload a ton of rockets along the road on the first pass…otherwise the trucks scatter and they are harder to pick off one by one…

Good hits…the most important of course is the anti-aircraft gun at the tail end of the convoy…

With the AA gone…it is safe to go down for further close range rocket and gun runs…

Using the cannon for the clean-up work…

Another nice…low intensity mission. Because I’m a low intensity kind of guy…

DCS is good therapy.
