C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 05

Looks like we have another raid inbound…multiple bandits inbound…

This is a hot start on the runway…so we are blasting off in no time…flipping arming switches as we go…

I circle over the airfield…straining to see the dots that might become enemy fighters…eventually I spot a few…

Rolling in on one…thankfully they aren’t carrying missiles…and don’t seem all that aggressive…

With two missiles…two kills…

I start searching for the other fighters…but they…

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 06

Next mission is a real fun one…some dead reckoning and pilotage to a target area. The brief is really good…with excellent instructions on how to find our target. Once again…all external views and F10 map views are restricted, so we have to depend on our navigation aids and MK-1 eyeballs…

Taxiing out…we pass by our detachment of C-101CCs on the ramp…

We take off…go low level and cross over midfield as instructed…take up the 010 heading for 2 minutes at the planned airspeed…

Low altitude is fun…

Popping over the ridge we spot the second waypoint with the big lake…we will exit the big lake heading north-west around 346 degrees…

Target area in sight. An AA site starts streaming tracer rounds as I do a quick orbit to assess the target area. Obviously the AA needs to go first…

The first runs are rocket runs…getting the majority of the targets after four or five runs…

After a few passes with the rockets we finish up with the guns…taking out all but a couple of vehicles…

The mission is a success after returning to base…

L-39s…in keeping with the low-intensity of the campaign. Something tells me I wouldn’t be able to out-turn a MiG-29 in my C-101CC… :rofl:

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 07

Time to do what Ukraine does well…sink ships…

Our mission today is pretty…well…shoe-horned into what is capable with the C-101CC as modeled in DCS World. The anti-ship capability of the 101CC is constrained by attacking fixed positions set in the Mission Editor beforehand…so there isn’t much search and destroy involved. That said, we have specific instructions on how and where to get to the launch point…

The Sea Eagle is a big weapon…and you will know it if you have a pair of them loaded as you lumber down the runway…

Getting set up to track the proper NDB bearing…I was struggling to figure out how to use BTM 16X when I converted to 16X to a VHF frequency it was outside of the range of my NAV radio…

After takeoff I maintain below 500’ and wait on the crossing radial and a DME provided by asking for navigation assistance back to Batumi…which gave me a rough DME…

I reached the launch point, waited another minute or two…then launched my missiles. Real life intervened at that point and I had to drop my headset and abort the mission… I like to think my missile made it through…

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 08

Mission #08 is a night (pinky night) attack against another enemy helicopter FARP…

Going to be a tricky attack without rockets…this time it will be 4x Mk-something bombs…maybe 83s?

With all that fuel and iron hanging on the wings the takeoff run uses all of the runway…

We are to track the 360 radial out of the base and combine it with flip flopping to a TACAN frequency for DME information…

Nice sunset…

Given that I can often miss with bombs…I elect to just drop a single from the port outboard station…I later switch this to a pair…one from each outboard so that I don’t get the violent roll mis-trim after dropping…

Once I reach the briefed radial and DME, I call on the F10 menu for target illumination…

I glance around and finally spot the dim light from the illumination round…

Rolling in from around 15,000’ with the air-brake running out…

I brightened this screen a bit so that you could see…it was quite a bit darker. The steep approach angle works great for accuracy for the free-fall bombs…

A pretty lucky hit…nearly dead center…

Coming back around to drop my second pair…an AA site comes alive and rounds float across my canopy…way too close for comfort…!

Second set of bombs are spot on too…

Nice mission with some fun features to it…

C-101s Over Georgia - Mission 09

Our final mission is an attack on the last of the enemy armor way up in the mountains north of our base. Interestingly, we get to mount and use our GPS for this mission…making navigation to the target area a bit easier…

After takeoff I orbit the airfield for about five minutes waiting for my wingmen to takeoff and rejoin…

Beautiful lighting and atmospheric effects in DCS World…

We climb higher and higher…aircraft performance suffers at these altitudes…

Much easier to navigate using the GPS instead of flip flopping VORs and TACANs…

I park wingman #3 and #4 in an orbit about 5 miles away and order #2 to engage air defenses. This allows me to pinpoint the locations of the AA - he does his best…putting some rockets down and damaging a unit, but in the end he gets too low and can’t pull out of the valley…

Eventually I put #3 and #4 into the fight…they last for a couple passes before they too are either hit by AA or drive into the steep valley walls…

Now it’s my turn to head down the pipe…rockets first…concentrating on the AA sites…

Not hard to see why the wingmen crashed…the performance during the pull-offs is really difficult…

I eventually neutralize the AA using long distance rocket attacks…but it uses up all my weaponry…so I head back to base to rearm - something I had not done on any of the previous missions. Kind of sad to return to the ramp as the sole survivor…

Back airborne and headed back to the valley…feels like returning to the scene of the crime…

Combination rocket and close in gun runs on the remaining armor vehicles (4 of them) and the mission is a success…the campaign is over…!

That completes our Ukraine pilot training in the C-101CC…our introduction to western style aircraft… What a great module (the C-101EB and CC)…!

I’m not so sure… remember the HP Reverb box tasting? Not sure how @BeachAV8R could tease us longer but I’m not ruling out the possibility of a T-38 session in Nevada yet

Now it is time to move on to a western fast jet to learn some fast jet concepts.

F-5E Training Mission 01

I can’t actually recall ever having flown the F-5E in DCS. One of those modules I purchased, put in the library, and never really touched…so this will be fun exploring this module.

The first mission is a cold start tutorial. It isn’t as thorough as some types of tutorials out there…more of a “these are the steps” as opposed to “these are the steps and this are the reasons why they exist like they do…” Not necessarily a bad thing in entertainment software…

The voiceovers and text are thorough though…

We use the air cart to get our engines running…a very short process and certainly less complicated than the Russian architecture of throwing a dozen circuit breaker switches before something comes to life…

Once we have the engines running…we are instructed to follow the HUMVEE to the active runway…

The mission goes as far as line-up and takeoff…but lets you off the hook once airborne…

Of course I can’t stand to take off an aircraft and not landing…so I bring it around a WAG what settings I need. The flap control stuff is a bit foreign to me with the thumb switch. I’ll have to dip into a Chuck’s Guide or something…

Very impressive performance compared to everything else I’ve flown to date in this series. Certainly dusts the C-101 and L-39…

I think you’ve probably got a few more steps in there than real combat pilots?
I thought it went from prop trainer to jet trainer (L-39 or C-101 or T-38 or Hawk…) to model trainer (ie F-16B/D) to solo in type (F-16A/C/whatever)?

I mean, I get it if you’re doing this as a way to explore multiple DCS modules with a larger purpose, but it strikes me as closer to a campaign in good old Strike Commander where you work your way up to the best fighters. :slight_smile:

IIRC the German pilots who trained for the Tornado indeed used four planes during training:

Basic prop (Grob G120), basic jet (T-37B) then the T-38 to learn handling supersonic flight and fast approaches, and then the Tornado.

It’s actually pretty easy.
You set the switch on the wall next to the throttle to THUMB SW and then the thumb switch to AUTO. No real need to touch this in most cases.

Also well done: you managed to retract the air brakes after the cold start before takeoff, which is a common Rookie mistake in the F-5

I thought the approach here was the jet trainer chosen was dependent on the destination.
So after the prop, if they were going to fighters it would be a LIFT like a Hawk/T-45/C-101/T-38 (although the ability for the trainer to fly over Mach 1 is no longer seen as all that important), if they were going to transports/tankers/bombers it would be a multiengine jet trainer of one type or other.

Yeah…that was basically the gist behind it…sort of do a Tour of DCS modules… It has been fun so far…forcing me to fly some modules I really had shelved. I know one thing…flying the F-16 with a HUD and CCIP/CCRP type stuff is going to feel positively futuristic compared to these angles, speeds, and altitudes type bombing… The only reason I’m hitting anything is because I drive down at high angles to low altitudes… I’d be toast in a serious AA or SAM environment…

I’ve been flying a lot of TTI missions on my group’s server and I always get caught with SAMs and fighters hitting me at the same time just as I’m lining up to drop on the target. :unamused:
