Oh wow that is one angry lookin’ hunk of Russian metal
I do love how diametrically opposed Russian and French helicopter design is…take the Dauphin, all sleek lines and Fenestron tail rotors etc…where’s these guys were like “tavarits, it does not look angry enough! Add more protruding bits and bulkheads! Is good!”
And yet even though they appear to be polar opposites, they do agree on clockwise rotating main rotors!
Makes you think why the Americans went counter clockwise…
Perhaps the squirrels forced them to
Psh, they just want to be different.
One of the thing KGB (or GRU) spies did was find out the exact dimensions of the F-4 phantom’s main tires. The MiG-23 then got tires of the exact same specifications. Why? Well, you overrun Laage, you get free spare tires! Is smart tavarish, da? They did the same with things like electrical, fuel and huffer connections.
They may agree with the French on CCW. But what about throttle twist? Russia twists right to increase power. America twists left. Not sure what Europe does. Academic anyway as a decreasing number of modern helicopters use twist during start and fewer still are ungoverned in flight. Funny how these choices are made. My guess is that there is usually no logical engineering reasoning. It’s just to be different.
I just wrote out 3 different reasons the throttle could be working in opposite directions and debunked all of them myself without posting, so I’m just going to sit here quietly and not make noise
Coriolis effect? I’ll get my coat…
Maybe Americans just cannot help pushing for power, even if its just on the wrist
that thing remembers me that many boeings in the overhead panel have the “forward off” vs “forward on” logic depending on the company were it is operated.
So do Airbuses. We have many “landing lights go forward for ON” aircraft and just enough “landing lights go backward to go ON” to alternately ensure a lot of dark landings and a lot of blinded rampers!
He looks well equipped for those high G Velodrome turns.
I spent some time in Iwakuni, Japan. We happened to be there for their annual air show one summer and the star attraction was to be the Blue Impulse; their version of the Blue Angels in metallic blue F-1s.
Unfortunately the weather was dog squeeze…so
low that they couldn’t even do their Low Show.
But God bless ‘em the whole team came out, in flight suits and helmets no less, on metallic blue mini bikes and put on their “Very Low Show”.
Now THAT’S entertainment!
“Driver, take me to work”.
