Varjo Aero VR headset

This would be my next headset but potato fov is killer.

I hate my reverb 2 because fov is soo narrow even after fov mods.

Maybe time to go back to pimax but customer service/build quality is bit minus.

Would love to get varjo with 120 horizontal fov.
But maybe someday we get high rez/nice fov…

Oh yes…!
I wonder why we don’t see more VR manufacturers experimenting in FoV enhancement? Obvious issues are warping image and lens design. But that should be possible to overcome, right?
I also hope this foveated rendering with eye tracking makes it possible to have larger displays without sacrificing performance.

Maybe its that high fov needs more expensive lenses, so not so much sales > not good for profit :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I would guess so… The image that must be focused on the retina gets bigger, so the lens must be thicker. Thick lenses equals more distortion that must be corrected by software. At least if you want the same resolution in the perimeter of the view as in the middle.

I think that’s the answer. If you only need to have good clarity forward then its easy enough (i.e. not easy at all, but possible with these modern computer designed lenses) but for the corners you’re asking the lens to do a lot of work, and everyone’s face is a different shape which probably impacts the off-centre view more than the straight-ahead view that we all adjust our headsets to get right…

Next VR Toolkit will have dynamic foveated rendering, for the Varjo Aero…!

In other news, Varjo took over the Varjo Gamers Discord channel today. I hope this means they want more interaction with the game/sim users…

Working on a hanger. Testprinting today.

The finished product, printed in some cheap PLA for testing purposes.

The Aero, just hanging… :vr:

Very nice, so where or how did you make these new mounts? Is there a printable (order capable) link somewhere to them? I’m thinking of going with the same setup, same headphones…

I assume these are the headphones, did the screw that fits in that mount come from the headphones oem product?:

It wont let me post a link but the $49 speakers on amazon " Urbanears Plattan 2 Bluetooth On-Ear Headphone, True White (04092114)"?

Are you using the microphone built into the headphones, is it ok quality/recognition?

Oh… Hi there, @markm75! Sorry for missing your post here!
I made and printed the mounts myself. Let me know if you need them.
The screws are from another project that was scrapped and they were just laying around.

I’m just using the mic in the Aero.
Disregard last… It’s actually the mic in the headset that I’m using, it just shows as Varjo Aero Audio in the Audio settings, because it is of course connected to the Aero :man_facepalming:

Today I installed the Open Composite openxr_api.dll to both DCS and IL-2. This means bypassing Steam VR and all its associated issues.
Works really well! And now I can use the OpenXR Toolkit with all its performance enhancements. Let’s see how that foveated rendering works…

So…foveated rendering…
Yeah…
What to say…?
Using the OpenXR Toolkit I can specify foveated rendering for DCS and MSFS. Only MSFS allows me to enable eyetracking to get dynamic fov. rendering.
Turning it on, in MSFS, with an inner ring of 50% at 1/2 res. and an outer ring of 75% and 1/16 res yields about 6-8 fps increase and no image degradation that I can see. The menu text is a bit pixelated in certain angles, but in the virtual cockpit, everything looks fine.
Doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference in DCS though. I may be missing something, but the advantage of foveated rendering is mostly when the system is GPU limited, I think. DCS has always been a CPU hog, so maybe this is why.
Need to play around some more with these settings but so far I am impressed with what people can come up with, to improve on our sims.

Finally got around to print my hanger in carbon fibre reinforced PETG.
Turned out very nice…and strong!
I renamed it HANGR, since Varjo don’t want others to use their logo

Neat :+1:

‘Hangr’ must be the nordic-looking runes on it I guess?

It looks incredibly ‘tight’ as we say in Dutch (“strak”, used in context of tension (like on a rope), tight fit, and style).

Yeah… I wrote Varjo on my prototype, using their logotype stylized font. I then asked if that was ok, but they replied that they only accepted their logo on their products. So I made my own name and wrote it in a similar style

The new logo looks good and is definitely unique to your piece. Unless you intended to sell them you could have done anything you wanted though.

Never planned on selling, but people wanted me to share it, so I uploaded it on thingiverse… Not sure about the law here, but I didn’t feel like testing anybodys patience…
