Varjo Aero VR headset

The Q3 seems to be a good value for money headset. I’m considering it for the pass through cameras. But I’m holding out for the VR-1 reviews as my Aero will keep me happy for another two years at least.

Aww that’s an unpleasant surprise for us VR simmers! They seemed to be doing so well… Rising interest rates and the end of free investor money hit a lot of tech companies harder than expected… it must not have been enough.

I have a friend, he races quite seriously in VR, who pre-ordered the Bigscreen Beyond. He returned his Pimax and is currently using a Valve Index (refresh rate > clarity for those on the ground). Will keep you updated but Bigscreen Beyond is the prime candidate to replace my Reverb when it dies (physically or in software). A pure SteamVR headset, with supposedly great comfort and clarity. We will see.

Disappointing news and only two years support is poor form. I was hoping to get more than two further years of use from it. It is very well built so it might soldier on beyond that date. However two years is a long time in this sort of technology so who know what will be available then.

It’s almost been a year since @UncleZam sent me his G2 speakers, to use on my Aero… The 3D printed adapter that I found on Thingiverse didn’t work, so I’m rolling my own.
One question for those in the know.
The G2 speakers have 2 pins. I guess one signal and one ground. Does it matter which is which? @sobek…?

If it’s just a speaker then no - so long as you’re consistent about which one is ground on each side otherwise you’re going to have phase issues (it’ll sound tinny and weird).

Disclaimer: I have not hands on with this exact device. But they look like they’re just speakers?

I think so… I guess I could pry it open and have a look.

You could try measuring the resistance across the pins first… if it’s 2, 4 or 8 ohms then it’s almost certainly directly wired to the speaker

Looking at this link on HP’s website I’m now very confident they’re just speakers. There also seems to be a slot for a pogo pin you could use to align the clips (though you’re probably aware of this, I just didn’t see it in the photos)

I have been summoned (you have yourself to blame for that :stuck_out_tongue: ). What kind of setup is this? If there can be crosstalk to the contralateral ear, then @Torc is right, you have to wire them in phase. If these are like closed headphones where no crosstalk happens then the phase of individual speakers does not matter.

The test is inconclusive… But I have a cheapo multimeter. I saw varying resistance between 6-8 Ohm.

It’s the Reverb G2 speakers that I will use on my Varjo Aero, so I’m making an adapter for the speakers. I need to make a cable for a regular 3,5mm plug, to the speakers.

@sobek I was assuming that since they sit off the ear there’d be a degree of crosstalk in the low frequencies, at least at higher volume settings?

@Troll hmm, I just did a bit of testing myself on things I’ve got around the house. My 8 ohm guitar amp speaker measures 7.4 ohms on my multimeter. My headphones which have bluetooth and “direct wired” connection show 32 Ohms across the direct wired connection. And a set of noise cancelling earbuds with some circuitry between the plug and the speaker show 1.5kOhms (across all three of the terminals, left right and mic, so I’m confident that’s the circuit).

Not sure any of that helps, sorry!

Here are renders of the adapter I`m making.

Here are the prints and the contact surfaces with soldered leads on them…

Here are the Reverb G2 speakers that @UncleZam sent me, on my Varjo Aero.

It’s a bit of a rats nest that I must tidy up a little.

I also added a small microphone that is taped to the underside of the headset… I may need to add a boom, to get better pick up of my voice.

The sound with the two G2 speakers is of course not as good as wearing over ear headphones, but they are a good compromise that doesn’t require having to put on headphones over the headset.
