Yeah, me included. I expected to be let down a bit by the rave reviews about clear picture, but I never thought the fit would be an issue…
No. If they will take the Aero back, I will probably return it. If they don’t I might as well just try it out and connect it to the PC, just to see what all this clarity hype was all about.
But if I return it, I will just keep my G2 until something else comes along.
First of all, this is the hinge. The picture in the manual is a bit misleading. Turning the knob doesn’t lift or lower the display, it tilts it.
Here’s how it sits on my head.
The tilt knob is in the upper position, meaning that the display is tilted as far up as possible. Even with this setting I need to pull the neck strap as far down as I can, on my neck. I wish the tilt knob allowed me to tilt the display even further up.
Varjo support confirmed that I can connect and test the headset and still return it within 14 days, if not satisfied.
So far their support has been excellent…
And now I can’t remember my Varjo account password…! Haven’t used it since I ordered it. Click reset password. Get a link to my email. Type in a new password, clicks continue…and nothing…!
Ugh. I feel for ya brother. The above gif perfectly emotes my experience when my new PC arrived with the GPU DOA. The shipping of it was the biggest pain as I live in a remote (in this context) area. Your images almost make me wonder if they over-thought this design. Wishing the best.
The password issue was fixed by a browser cache cleaning…
Good and fast support from Varjo, again!
I like those guys. I want to like their headset too!
So…
I got my account in order, downloaded the Varjo Base software and set the Aero up.
Yes, the image is very clear. The auto IPD works and it’s uncanny how well it tracks my eye movements.
But, there are major distortions to the image. Like when I used bifocal glasses for the first time. Everything bends and distorts as I move my head.
I tried DCS and the distortions were there too. Almost made me sick, and I don’t usually get VR sickness.
I need to read up on how to use the software…
Also, Horizontal and vertical FoV is noticeably smaller than the G2.
Based on my impressions so far, this headset is going back.
Oh, and my face hurts after 30min. Had to readjust the neckstrap several times too.
I was afraid of that. Heard about this in a review but, well you know how those can be; several reviews where “it’s just wonderful!”, but one that really had issue with distortion, especially as you got towards the edge.
Hm… The horizontal and vertical FOV of my G2 is just on the limit of what I am still OK to have. Getting even smaller FOVs might be an issue in my case.
Or “wow, this is beyond awesome guys!” Yes. What would you say if you were provided the headset for free and wanted to make sure more is coming in the future to keep the views of your YT channel up?
That’s why I am happy we got some independent user reviews here and there not being afraid to shed light on less great features of the hardware.
Troll, I think that I am speaking for most of us here when I say thank you for posting your frank impressions of the product and of your experiences. I am aware that that statement and $30 (unless you take the ferry to Denmark) will buy you a cocktail, but we really appreciate your courage to be the first.
I’m just sorry for your disappointment @Troll . It wasn’t a cheap headset and the hype had us all believing this product would take things to the next level. At least you still have the G2.
Really wanted to like the Varjo Aero…
Youtubers are influencers. They do their thing.
What drove me towards the Aero was Varjos outstanding reputation amongst commercial users.
The Aero is not their first rodeo. This is what’s so puzzling about it…
Looking at the Varjo users discord channel I see a lot of users have distortion issues. Many of them say that you get used to it… I can believe that to be true, so I’ll give it a couple of days.
The smaller FoV is perhaps not a big issue. The clarity of the image sort of makes up for it. But the distortions are problematic. It’s almost as if I need to hold my head still, to enjoy that clarity, because if I look around the image curves and bends.
