Victork2 and his ultimate folly

Well… She’s beautiful and allowed you to buy an HMVVV, so let’s be frank… she can call it whatever she wants.

To be fair, when you described the simplicity of the electrical “systems”, I thought of that very same word.

It’s not particularly fast, it’s not comfortable, it’s not some high-tech MBT with a rotating turret and laser sensors…
It’s a military tractor.

You are being fact driven and practical.

Shes pissed off that i bought this and not a kitchen

Oh, the smile of the long suffering spouse. She’s happy you’re happy, but she’s not happy about whatever it is you’re happy about. I know that smile extremely well.

I’m guessing a week is now the foreseeable future? :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s a good load of farmers firefighters :face_with_peeking_eye:

It’s better than a tractor, I could only get half that amount in the front loader bucket. Is the Hummer a permanent 4x4?

Also wondering how much of a dent you’d think it’d make in my new barn door?

Yep, permenant 4x4.

It would probably break down on the way across your yard

A 20 minute coolant flush is currently on hour 3 and the 8th flush as its absolutely disgusting in there.

We are having a blast

that sounds like you have hit the point where you are flushing out all the crud which is blocking all the holes from now it will leak out of

Seems like the oil hasnt been changed for a million years (but its done no work so probably no harm done)

Fresh oil, new filter (off the shelf! Miracle in Witney!) New coolant/anti freeze and I found out the fan is permanently engaged instead of coming on at 200 degrees so thats cost me 45 bhp each time i drive it, reason, unplugged connection!

Goes like a rocket (ish) now! Sounds less like a tractor and more like a posh tractor.

Ive really enjoyed today. Nothing feels better than back to basics maintenance and seeing an actual tangible result at the end.

I love it. Its behaving itself so far so we haven’t fallen out yet. Happy humvee owner here…

The boy is actually showing a great deal of interest in the mechanical side as well which is interesting and fun

Little warming up run to get the coolant circulation moving (no its not right hand drive, i was in selfie mode)

damn cant watch the vid … coming up as private

You almost need an intercom system in that thing. It’s a 3-wood shot between the driver and passenger.

Changed the settings, sorry!

So ive been having cold starting issues with the HMMWV since i bought it. They have a very complicated and specific sequence in starting the glow plug cycle which is all governed by the safe start box (s3 box)

In short. It’s an expensive pain in the ass.

The guy i bought it from, told me he had solved the issue by changing the glow plugs and it started fine. This was proven to be false (i didnt say anything at the time because i cannot be bothered arguing with people i KNOW to be lying)

A HMMWV should start instantly once the glow plug wait cycle was completed. Mine didnt. And the wait to start light only flashes for a split second rather than staying on for 5 seconds to cycle the plugs

So while it was warmer. It was ok but its got a touch colder now and it wont start without a massive effort and clouds of white smoke

So i ordered a set of glow plugs and set about changing them as that is the first point of failure. Got 7 of them out with relatively little effort. When they fail, the tips swell and get stuck in the cylinder head. 1 was a bit tricky but came out with some wigglin…

1 took me 5 hours of coaxing. Looked online and the tool to remove them is expensive and in America. So i sprayed penetrative oil and wiggled and sprayed over and over and finally i got it out without snapping it (snapping means taking the injector out and fishing for the end of the plug with a magnet or forceps. Its a pain

This is the set and the swollen one

Anyway. Got them all replaced and nada. Same.

Checked all the wiring, all the earth’s. Everything over and over. Checked the resistance on the new plugs. Checked the old ones and found 7! Dead ones.

Its looking like the start box might be the issue. But im not keen to spend over a £1000 on it until ive found the cause for failure.

On the upside, i sorted the cooling out and the fan is working as it should.

Also, got pissed off with getting wet due to the ill fitting roof so i did a jerry rigged ‘water go away strap’

Me and obi went to the shop in it earlier and left him to guard it. Came back to him laughing his head off as so many people were waving at him :joy:

Its annoyed me today…but i love it so much i dont mind

More humvee fun. Involving packed in sand and an airline, a moron without safety goggles and lots of blinking and swearing.

The V valley of the V8 keeps filling to the brim with water since i cleaned all the sand out from the Yuma desert. I figured there would be a drain hole somewhere and the google told me where it was

Small hole on the back of the engine runs a tube down through the block and out the side. After a bit of poking around, i found it jam packed and blocked completely with sand. Managed to get a coat hanger, a pipe cleaner and an airline and free it all up. Took a while but it was nice and satisfying to watch it drain a cup of water away. I then stuck the airline in the wrong end to blast any remaining wet crap out the top and it basically sand blasted my face and eyes. Yuma sand. Sucks.

Also, bit the bullet and ordered a hugely expensive smart start box from the US. This should (bloody better) solve my starting issues. Ive also bought a supplemental grounding kit that solves all of bad earth problems with hmmwv and save the start box from killing itself again. Bought a fuel cutoff switch to hide somewhere as well as an anti theft device as well. It will spin over but not fire any fuel into the cylinders so they arent going anywhere. Not sure where to mount that but i like the idea of putting it near the passenger side so obi has his own switch to flick to get it started up and make him feel a bit more involved.

Expensive week. But I’m smiling. No lorries at night means i can put the kids to bed and them humvee in the dark. Yes. It is a verb.

Im getting there
