I didnt check everything properly so i cant find the hinge mounts for the rear doors. So they will have to wait for a bit till i can order some.

It looks pretty fricking sweet though. Im extremely happy with it.

From what i can work out, it was assigned to 3rd Battalion 4th marines from 2002-8 in california. Then went to its 2nd life refurbishment in 08. After that, I’m not sure…

I think it went to ARAD after that due to some markings it has on the doors. But this is guesswork and I’m not sure.

I DO know it sat in the Yuma desert for at least 5 years in cold storage. The thing is absolutely caked in sand. Every panel, every where is sand. It was never deployed afaik

I wouldnt mind finding out more about it but I’ve not really had the time. I don’t think it was anything more interesting than a gate guardian or checkpoint vehicle. Nothing exciting

Another job that i was not looking forward to was draining and refilling the portal hubs on the HMMWV
A very important piece of maintenance to have clean gear oil in the hubs to prevent horror shows occurring inside.

The HMMWV has a peculiar drive train, the driveshafts come into the hub and rather than going straight into the wheel hub itself, slot into a set of 2 gears that are one above the other. The benefit is much higher ground clearance, the downside is the maintenance and potential for failure in so many way.

A magnet on the drain plug is usually first sign that something awful is happening. But my front ones seem actually to be in fair condition.

Bit of slime, bit of metal paste but no lumps.

Ive only done the fronts so far as ran out of time but those are usually the problem ones to get apart so thats nice to have sorted that.





Lara helped a bit as well while Obi was playing farming simulator inside. That was nice!

Did a nice bit of (tee hee) wheeling and dealing today.

You may remember, i managed to acquire a brand new winch a while back.

Well a guy I got friendly with at the military show came over today to see my HMMWV (he has 3!)

His small Peugeot 206 with the seats folded down managed to squeeze in 2 complete and newish wheels and tyres, this was no mean feat! I was massively impressed. He also bought me a slave cable which is a purpose built cable, which plugs directly into a port on the humvee for jump starting from another one. Its a beast of a thing.

Ill post some pics tomorrow of the new wheels, bit of work involved with it as well as i have a really rusty wheel currently fitted with a goodish tyre that i want to put on a new rim. That will be fun.

He also has a trailer for the hummer that is literally brand new and still has the wrapping on it. I’m dying to get my hands on this as they are RARE in this country.


I want it. Badly. I might even swap my iveco recovery lorry for it.

Nice guy. He’s going to introduce me to the show scene in the summer.

One thing that really pleased me was he looked all around mine, went all through it and couldnt believe i got it for the low price i paid for it. Its a solid truck with great potential. Happy Ace

Sounds exactly like the slave cable we had on the Leopards (the port was up behind the drivers head on the AS1).

Very similar. Leo’s were a two pin (IIRC) and had a straight connector, not right angle.

Were Leo’s 24 Volt? I keep seeing 48 volt nato stuff pop up but im not sure what vehicle uses 48 volt

A few years ago I met a Leo Richtschütze who told me a story about how one guy lost his hand because he bridged exposed battery contacts with the wristband of his watch. At least the wound was immediatelly cauterized :grimacing:

I had to check the manual

8 x batteries with 2 each in series and 4 groups in parallel gave 400 Ah @ 24 V.

You definitely wouldn’t want to bridge the contacts on the slave cable… which is why our SOP was to connect them with the master switches off.

Even 12V car batteries can provide an insane amount of current to drive the starter motors (something like 400-600 amps for small cars), not to mention 24V batteries on trucks and tanks. They will immediately melt any metal between the contacts when shorted. Apparently there was a cover missing and he shouldn’t have been wearing his watch.
