Yes, sorry, I think we are multianswering across a couple of questions here, but it’s all good stuff.
I certainly feel more knowledgeable after everyone’s excellent answers and pics.
Hopefully, others who come across the same questions will discover the gold mine of good stuff that’s in this thread!
Ordered some Virpil rudders yesterday and they are shipping already!
So, if you need some pedals, they seem to be in stock.
I jumped on the CM2/WarBRD bandwagon (thanks again for all the help) about 5 days ago but haven’t heard anything yet. Looks like they are back ordering from 1-2 weeks, so no surprises.
Interested in your feedback when you get all the kit. I need new rudder pedals myself; the weak link in my current setup (though it gives me an excuse for lousy landings?)
I just use:
“You know that’d been a beautiful landing, if the runway were 5 feet lower.”
or the old:
“It’s not my fault, and it’s not the captain’s fault.
It’s the Asphalt!”
I’ll let you know how they work. The shipping weight is 22lbs. So it’s got some heft.
My Fighter Pilot Mat (FPM) arrived today and it has solved both my rudder pedal and chair movement issues. I was also impressed that the manufacturer thought enough of their product to include a manual! I mean it’s a piece of rubber with carpet attached.
I chose the 3 x 6 foot version in tactical black. Fits and works perfectly. Well, that is until my wife sees it. Cheers Paul.
That’s a great looking setup! I noticed that you got the half pedal rudders. How do they work.
I debated and decided on the full pedal ones. Not sure what the feel difference will be.
Looks great Dan.
Now, for the final finishing touch… lockable chair wheels…
I had a set of these for my previous chair and liked them so much I brought them over to my new one. Although all 5 wheels are lockable, you only need to lock one on either side and you are not going anywhere . Evidently office chair wheel attachments are a standard size, so you can be reasonably sure the new wheels will fit.
On the way!
Yes, I debated long on this as well. In the end, my reasoning was that I only need the foot brakes for a short part of the flight, and the rest of the time I’m just nudging them with my toes. I’ve been flying a lot of WW2 birds the last few weeks, so using the rudders constantly. But still more comfortable keeping heels on the floor and pressing on the bottom pads.
Of the Virpil pedals, my only complaint, now that Paul has solved my sliding issue, is that I wish they were dampened a bit. They have so little friction, that they feel less like aircraft controls and more like what I image steering a bobsled might feel like. I understand now why people install motorcycle steering dampers on high end rudders.
I have to say that I’m really liking the damper on my Crosswinds. Is there a similar option/addon for your set?
Sadly, not yet. But if history tells us anything, @Troll probably has one on his drawing board digital tablet.
And there you have it!
Man that’s great. Need to know more.
Edit: found more about the mod here.
Looks like the same kind of motorcycle steering damper that is popular with Slaw, MFG and TM pedals.
Should be possible to use a longer screw, mount the damper body to the pedal arm, and then drill a hole in the base, for the piston link.
Actually, there are some instructions and links in the video description.
That mod is amazing.
Well, ordered about 13 Sept and everything, including the Monstertech mounting plates, was here by 21 Sept. Can’t complain about that kind of shipping.
I know that many are already familiar with Virpil. But for those that wander here from the Interwebs, I thought I’d throw out a few impressions.
I’m pretty impressed by the build quality. Everything seems solidly made! The switches have a good feel, but they do feel a bit mushy compared to an actual aircraft stick. Understandable, considering the fraction of the cost that these units are made for!
The throttle has a great throw which I think will really address the difficulties in setting power precisely in some sims. The thrust curve is spread out more than in a short throw throttle and the Virpil feels much more like an actual aircraft throttle than some gaming peripherals.
I think this will be especially useful in flying the Harrier or any carrier based aircraft where you need to make fine adjustments. I haven’t found the throttle friction yet though and the throttle has some good resistance to it, so that may challenge some of that fine tune control just a bit. It may also loosen up over time.
I went with the WarBRD base and the Mongoose stick. It works well but is a tall drink of water! My Monstertech mount is all the way down and I still need to raise my chair in order to comfortably hold it. The default springs feel perhaps a little tight to me for a hydraulically or electrically actuated aircraft. Makes it a little hard to fly with your fingertips, but maybe I need to get back into the gym. There are of course other springs that came included which I may try down the line
Still, it feels like a precision instrument throughout.
Overall I’m super happy with the Virpil setup and would absolutely recommend it if you are in the market. It’s not cheap, but I think it will substantially increase the feeling that you are sitting in an actual aircraft/spacecraft over the more entry level options. It will also provide you with so many buttons, hats, triggers, and switches that you will never need to QWERTY hunt again in your life.
Lastly, I wanted to thank everyone for all their help in getting me to pull the trigger on this thing.
If not for you, I would never have taken the plunge.
Expect an angry letter from my wife on about the 15th of next month when the credit card bill arrives!
Glad you like it!
The WarBRD base can be configured with different cams and springs. If you tinker a bit with it, I bet you can find the perfect centering feel.
Unfortunately, and I have the same MT mount and need to do mine as well. You have to pop off the bottom plate.
I had the same issue, especially after I added the Virpil curved extension. Eventually, I decided to order some profile from 8020.net to add depth. The profile part number is 40-4080-Black (you’ll want unpainted), and I had them machine one of the end caps, P/N 40-7048. I measured my original mount’s height, added how much lower that I needed the stick, and ended up ordering a 420 mm piece. It’s an easy swap.
Wow, that’s quite a solution. Nicely done!
I figure I’m going to need to do some jiggery pokery to it at some point. Right now I figured I’d enjoy it for awhile first before I go snapping something off and brick it!
