Virtualy New to VR - Questions, Observations, no poetry

Wow! This looks pretty cool. I am definitely going to have to try this when it comes out.

Did another flight in the A-10C and one in the Hornet Last night.

Observations:

  • it seems that the Hornet cockpit is a bit better for VR. Text is clearer for example.
  • I almost completely forgot how the Hornet works. Will have to re-learn it, starting with a HOTAS layout.
  • I checked my IPD, it is 66mm. I set it in DCS (previously had it on 64 I think) but I cannot see a difference.
  • I tried to find a setting in which grass doesn’t ruin the frame rate. Didn’t find one, so kept it turned off for now.
  • what is the stance on preload radius? I remember from a few years ago that setting it higher improves performance unless the PC is low on RAM. I set it to maximum.

I have the pre-load set to max. I think it makes things smoother. Also, if your rig can take it,make sure the pixel density is set to 1.5 or higher for a sharper image.

I have it set to 1.4 and it does make a difference. I had to lower some other settings but the difference isn’t that much worse. (Water and textures for example).

Might try 1.5

Oh, and the VR performance Mod can make a very noticeable difference too.

Is it multiplayer compatible?
…not that I have played any MP in more than a year, but now that I have a proper PC again I’d like to do that again sometimes.

Edit: just read that it breaks the integrity check. That’s a pity. Will probably still try it.

…and wasn’t there a VR performance patch announced by ED, too? Is that one already in the release version?

Indeed, the mid is going to be for single player. Sorry, I don’t fly online due to a flaky connection and so I forgot about that little detail.

Evidently the VR performance improvements are already part of the stable release and have been for awhile now. I saw a modest improvement but it wasn’t the massive difference some of us were anticipating.

My new homes have been the 757-200 through 767-400. The XP versions that I have talked lovingly about elsewhere get it exactly right at most angles but some things are off. For instance…(OK this is a dumb example but I think it is telling)…aft of the Captain’s tiller is a niche in the plastic molding to serve as a coffee mug holder. It even “cleverly” has two little cutouts for the mug handle. The real thing was designed for the skinny little mugs that were enjoyed by the tiny little humans who existed in the '70’s when the cupholder was designed. In the Flight Factor 767-300, this cupholder appears to be about 12 inches in diameter. The funny thing is that the rest of the perspective and sizing in that area appear correct. How something can be both correct and incorrect is a bit of a mind-fornication.

In IL2 which you may or may not own, some cockpits feel spot on. The I-16 is particularly great. But the P-40 simply cannot be correct. Or my settings are way off. The pedals feel like they are about 8 feet away. The panel looks like it would not be touchable with my outstretched arm without leaning forward. Yet my butt is perfectly centered over the seat as it should be. The DCS stuff all feel accurate.

Now that you mention the I-16…
I am so damn close to ordering it for DCSW, just to fly around and have some fun. Will wait for the next sale though.

I don’t have it for DCS but it has always been a favorite in IL2 both the original and the new. If this were a world where sims are reality, the I-16 would just about be the nicest flying airplane ever made.

I think that is the 7-Eleven Big Gulp modification that Boeing had to implement a few years ago when all the millennial pilots started flying.

about squeezing some performance… is this still a thing?

A 20 minute video about a one click performance boost.

How about putting the one click in text? Gah.

Kind of funny how they were making a huge fuss about it initially but when it was finally released there was a very quiet “it’s out” and nothing more. On the other hand, I completely understand that things happen and huge number of user hardware permutations make predictions difficult at the best of times.

Yeah it is kinda ridiculous.
Cannot watch it right now except without sound on a tiny phone screen.
Can anyone tell me what it is? It looks like it is happening between 7:30 and 8:00 in the video, he turns on (or off?) some option in his overclocking software.
Either way… that’s probably a bug then isn’t it? Shouldn’t apply to too many graphic cards out there.

Edit: In other news:
I set up my HOTAS for the Hornet and used Chuck’s excellent guide and a few training missions to halfway get up to speed again. Turns out I remembered more than I thought. I can now cold start the Hornet again, fly somewhere using waypoints, use dumb bombs in CCRP and CCIP, use the gun, use IR Mavericks, use the TGP and JDAMs, then fly back and land safely (on land).

If I have time tonight I will see if I can drop some LGBs and do proper radio navigation.

I had a few micro stutters but nothing bad in those missions. Haven’t tried the VR shader mod yet.

And I hardly got dizzy this time, despite the long flights that included some rougher maneuvering. Sloooowly improving.

I don’t remember exactly, it seems to actually open the overclocking software while DCS is running, mess whatever parameter up and return to default, keep the OC software running and alt tab back to DCSwas giving 30% more fps to this guy… There was an order how to do this… I never followed it up because it looks really weird and particular, not to mention clickbait-y, but the video is still up, so, who knows…

Yeah my acerbic reaction was not to you, you are awesome @taubkin and you know it

But twenty minutes thanking his patreons and begging for likes and subscribes. Ugh. Kids these days. That guy can go suck a fat one.

Keep taking it easy brother. No BFM until you don’t feel queasy at all anymore. I reckon I got my VR legs running and re-running the interactive training to almost all of DCS and then a couple campaigns that had me do a lot of straight&level.

I stopped watching when he described it as a “glitch”…

No offense taken @schurem ! I Agree that the guy is obnoxious… To the point he is suggesting everybody here could get a huge increase in performance, and nobody is willing to spend 15 minutes and try… Myself included!! :joy:
