vorpX impressions

Hm… What If vorpX could do DCS 2D into OpenXR VR…?

So… Is it worth buying it now?

It would be worth only because of the clouds

Two issues however:

  1. There is neither official nor community profile for DCS (so most likely no 3D)
  2. The head tracking would probably be below the par of the native VR implementation
  3. It will conflict with the CAS reshade mod

I will try to fiddle with it this evening, though. Thanks for thinking out of the box!

EDIT: Gave it a quick shot: It hooks just to 2D (but smooth as butter ). Maybe some of the existing DirectX 11 profiles would work but it will require neverending testing to go through all of them. I will try to google some representative DX 11 profiles and will try again.

Now for the real question that nobody’s asked yet:

Does Falcon BMS 4.35 work in VR now?

Hello all:

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I am actually trying to do exactly this. SF2 was working fluidly and beautifully for me the last time I tried it about a year ago, but now it’s crashing about 29 times out of 30 when I try to run it. I’m trying to figure it out on the VorpX end but they haven’t been super helpful and there doesn’t seem to be a way to install older VorpX builds (as some update clearly broke its SF2 compatibility). Has anyone had recent success with it? It’s a shame as SF2 was nearly at native-VR levels when it was working.

I never knew that you could fly SF2 in vorpx - I’m kicking myself for that. I used to fly SF2 a lot, until retail VR came out in 2016.
I’ve just reinstalled it all by pure coincidence, so I’ll have a go with VorpX. I bought the app before my Rift CV1 had even arrived and did a lot of testing and experimenting with it for a couple of years, but didn’t use it again after I got my Index. As soon as I get my reactivation code I’ll see how I get on with SF2. I’ll also be testing EECH (thanks for the suggestion, Dan!). I tried Rise of Flight (also just reinstalled) with TriDef VR but it was really garbage. Still, we have Flying Circus now, so no need to go down that road again.

There was a lot of vorpX interest back in 2020 when we tried to get Falcon BMS (fail) and CoD (win) working in VR. BeachAV8R took things a little further with EECH and ARMA. Personally, I had luck with IL2 CoD, but at the end of the day, the experience was not worth the effort, IMHO. We were already trying to get a handle on WMR, SteamVR, and eventually OpenXR technologies, adding this third layer of complexity seemed too cumbersome.

As far as SF2, I was most interested in getting Yankee Air Pirate 2 to run on Windows 10. I really wanted to have that experience in VR. But, no matter what I tried, SF2 refused to run on my system. This was supremely frustrating since I have an IT background and others seemed to do it easily.

When there was talk of Falcon and CoD supporting VR natively, I decided to wait. CoD VR is taking its sweet time, but hopefully worth the wait, like Falcon was.

Okay. I have some issues with Falcon BMS in VR - it’s great when flying, but last time I started in the VC with the start-up training TE the cockpit moved around with my head movement. Not a lot, but enough to make me start feeling a bit iffy. I made a short video of it, have to see if I kept it.

Don’t know why that happened. in the old days it would have been connected with poor performance but I had fpsVR running and the graphs were not just green, but the GPU was flat (less than 1ms frametime) and the CPU was almost flat with +/- 1ms. So no idea why.

I’ll report back on how I get on with VorpX and EECH and SF2.

Well I hope you guys don’t mind but now this thread has been ‘reactivated’ as it were, I’d like to run with it a bit.

VorpX has seen some updates that have taken out much of the original tweaking and frustration necessary, so it will be good to see how things go now.

I remember my main issue with IL-2 '46 was that although I had otherwise good VR with it, when in the cockpit and turning my head sideways the whole cockpit would skew one way or the other and this ruined the experience. I never found out what caused that and so never really stuck with IL-2 and at the time I really struggled to find anyone interested at all. (edit - that did apply to some other games, too, like 7 Days To Die in VR which also tilted with head movement).

I think one reason many of us like these older games is because they are from a time when games really were games (even sims!) and not like a second career, as they can be nowadays. Also, they are not so taxing on the kit, and can therefore be run maxed out.
Anyway, I’ll be getting on with it…

Ok first headaches

EECH I can’t get to hook at all.

SF2 is okay in the menu but get an unexplained CTD as soon as I try to fly.

I forgot why I stopped bothering with VorpX when so many games had VR mods added!

I’ll keep going with SF2 - I’ve tried a lot of settings, but maybe something get it going. I’m only trying NA first, as the profile I’m using from VorpX cloud says it only works with DX10 and I don’t know if other releases were updated to 10 or not. Maybe I’ll try without the profile or use a different one.

Then over to IL-2 1946. I don’t use VorpX for FPS as most of them made me feel sick, even when they seemed to be working well - HL2 was a good example, but Far Cry 3 was the same, as well as Dead Island.
I’d love to use it with rFactor, which is on the supported list, but when I do the resolution is completely pants. I prefer to use Virtual Desktop for that and just play in 2D, but zoomed-in. It’s not a bad way to do it.

I got EECH to work with the following steps:

Use version 1.16.0 (not 1.16.1), and the debug executable. Turn trackir on in eech.ini. Sometimes you need to start it a few times for it to work. Sometimes the window will go to desktop and you have to click on the executable again which usually crashes vorpx, but after launching it again it usually works.

I got SF2 NA to work using VorpX’s alternate hooking method, but about 95% of the time i get a CTD when starting a mission. The other 5% of the time i get fluid, smooth, beautiful near-native VR. I haven’t figured out yet what governs when it crashes and when it runs.

Thanks I’ll give it a try.
