It looks like it would be very cool, but not a replacement for a PCVR headset. It would be kind of neat to use when on a long airline flight, stuck in a hotel etc, but $3500 is pretty steep.
The BBC are pushing this like it’s The Next Big Thing. Pretty typical really - they all have Apple notebooks (paid for by us sucker licence fee payers).
Exactly. I get the feeling that the big players are waking up to VR being the future (not just gaming) and don’t want to be left behind… or I could be speaking out of my sphincter? The next year or so will tell.
I’m fine with Metabook taking my money as long as No 6 shows up in my metaverse. Call me Mr Nice Gaius.
I foresee a market for ‘full’ haptic suits
Ha ha.
Who or what is nr6?
Oh man, what rock have you been living under
Me whenever I see Cylon Nr.6
I use and like my Apple iPhone and iPad but don’t think this new product will suit me, certainly not at that price point. I actually like wearing my specs under the headset. Having no option but to get their prescription lenses is a real turn off. I haven’t bothered looking at other soecs much but a two hour battery life would be a serious limitation.
Yeah, I’d rather invest that in a VR headset I can use for simming, and there seem to be several to chose from, in the near future.
I’m going to have to either stop using my Pico 4 or find a way to disable or reroute the fan that blows out from in between the lenses. My optician says I’ve got an eyelid infection - can’t remember what it’s called - and I’m having to apply treatment a couple of times a day, indefinitely.
When I got the headset I noticed the air in my eyes and was a little concerned as I also have suffered from Sjørgrens for many years - a drying of the eyes is a main symptom - and realised the airflow was having an adverse effect. However, I soon stopped noticing and forgot all about it until I had an eye check-up on Thursday and this new disease was found (after shining a bright light into my eyes from a few inches for what seemed like an age - was bloody sore!).
I may be mistaken, but I’m sure I read a post or article somewhere about stopping the fan or reducing its effects. Whether that would cause damage to the internal workings is the next issue. Have to try and find out, otherwise I’ll have to try and sell the Pico - and I consider it my best VR headset.
It never rains, but it pours…
That’s so sad to hear @Johnny
I hope you can get that infection under control. I would love to fly the updated Gazelle with you soon. SA343L with the periscope, British desert storm livery, blowing up tanks in the Middle East…
If I were you, I’d just get a Quest 2 and sell the Pico now instead of risk damaging it by overheating.
If you buy used, the cost may even be negative.
Hey hey hey…
Not for me, but I know a few of you are waiting…
edit: if the resolution info is correct, you Quest 2 guys will finally get to see what those of us with Pico 4 do - and it’s a treat!
Quest 2 has a resolution of about 3.5MP (1,920 × 1,832 per-eye); a 30% jump should mean Quest 3 has around 4.5MP—probably meaning around 2,160 × 2,160 resolution per-eye.
That’s the native resolution of the HP Reverb, launched in Nov 2020.
Which, tbh is quite sufficient imo. A bit more FoV would be nice, as would foveated thingamibob.
I am pretty happy with the Quest 2 in terms of resolution and speed. My issue is long-term comfort. That’s why I am leaning towards the Quest Pro. Even if the Q3 is two screens and better res, I don’t think it will match it in comfort.
I agree, although more is always nicer but then we just kill the GPU (or CPU with flight sims).
WMR is long dead and buried (the funeral was held, but due to a registry error the coffin fell into the hole sideways requiring the mourners to have to write a cmd script to fix it etc), and the Quest 2 lenses are better than anything Samsung/HP ever came up with, so the Quest 3 if it does eye tracking for foveated rendering will be a nice offering with airlink etc.
I used to think something similar myself - “who cares, I’m happy with my Index and Quest 2” - but when I looked through those fantastic Pico pancake lenses and saw that lovely sharp cockpit, I changed my mind very quickly!
