Seems odd to me HP wouldn’t want to make this available to consumers?
I think of them as a Confused but Rich Uncle.
They seem all set up for a purchase order via an enterprise sales if you want 1,000 of them, but offering them via their webstore to real people seems to cause huge confusion for them. I suspect they weren’t expecting any demand or interest as well.
We often think of tiny outfits like Pimax being bad at the customer facing end, but the big guys can be equally inept for different reasons.
There was also a rumor that the units have shipped with an outdated firmware as well, in that the color correction profile you need on the panels needed to be updated. That apparently caused a panic that only a really large organization can do well. If you ask HP support when they will have stock they will just cut the connection and go hide.
Sort of torture at this point, but one more:
Looks awesome!
Has the guy mentioned anything about performance?
He mentioned that he’s getting 90 fps in Senua on a 1080Ti, but that’s about it. The review is due at the weekend apparently. The only other thing spec wise:
Reverb’s resolving power is a big step up regardless, pretty much in line with what the on-paper resolution comparison would imply:
- Rift S – 1.84 megapixels per eye
- Reverb – 4.66 megapixels per eye
Reverb has 2.53 times the total number of pixels as Rift S.
As such, Reverb was the obvious choice for use in Bigscreen, and while the resolution still isn’t high enough to match a virtual 1080p monitor at a typical distance, it’s fairly usable without needing to blow up the text a bunch.
Wow that looks amazing.
Ok. I was hoping for some XP11 numbers.
What I can’t grasp is…
The Rift CV1 has about 1.3 MP per eye. I run a Pixel Density of 1.5 in DCS, which would mean it renders about 2 MP. This gives me 90 FPS in most situations.
In my way of thinking, the Rift S, at 1.84 MP, and 80 FPS, will give me better performance and better clarity, over the Rift CV1.
And how on earth anyone will be able to utilize the Reverb 4.66 MP is quite frankly beyond my imagination.
So, the extended reasoning is that the day I can use that kind of resolution, is years from now and by then there will be new tech available…
Or, am I missing something?
Yes, you’re forgetting that XP11 and DCS are CPU bound.
By oversampling current headsets (to try to increase clarity with a fake way) we’ve already proven today that the GPU scale and do more (or rather, it’s not the limiting factor in those sims). It looks like the Reverb at 1.0x using 1:1 pixel resolution rather than oversampling is within reach for people with a 1080+.
Ok… But then I should be able to increase the pixel density, without a performance hit?
Or is a PD of 1, in DCS, on a 4 MP screen less demanding than a PD of 2, on a 2 MP screen?
The DCS PD is not linear, in that 1.5 is PD => 3240x1800 resolution = 5,832,000 pixels (I think, no coffee as yet).
It would be cool if we got a 50% increase in VR performance in DCS soon though as well.
The way I see the Reverb is that lots can still go wrong. It could be horrible to use or wear. The sweet spot could be bad. The mura/color correction is off. HP won’t actually manage to work out how the internet works to be able to sell them, or even sell them in shops. Support might be terrible. The Valve Index with a different panel might still be a better combo of tracking and clarity due to lens shenanigans we don’t know about yet. This guy doing the screenshots could be fake or at least not subjective etc.
But so far that screen is looking real nice…
We may still also have to turn stuff down on XP11 and DCS, even with a 2080, but the clarity will finally be getting closer to sitting in-front of a 1080p monitor from about 3 feet, which is interesting for sims I think.
Really? I didn’t know that. I thought it was just a multiplier. That changes my perception somewhat…
And I’ve been awake since 0300. Oh the glory of crewlife…
I guess. But HP usually delivers, don’t they?
Although their release strategy does seem a bit strange.
So far it doesn’t involve releasing, which is the hard bit.
I think HP will get there in the end, but in a way I’m ok with this as I really want to stick with getting some decent flight sim reviews for the Valve Index at the June 15th date. After that we should have a good pool of data and real-life experiences to share.
The Pro version, is out in limited numbers, or…?
Anyway, I haven’t paid much attention to the release date of the Reverb, as I decided to go for the S.
Good days for VR users, though.
Imagine where we’ll be in another 3 years…!
I think 3 weeks is a good window with how things are going.
Yeah, I really should refrain from making predictions that are so woefully unsubstantiated.
That looks… wow.
Starts planning campaign to convince wife of essential development gear.
That sweet spot looks mighty small IMO.
Sort of depends how far he managed to cram that camera in there I think. I’m really not a fan of these sort of photos but we don’t have anything else so far. He seems suspiciously upbeat to my English super cynic sensibilities. I mistrust that level of joviality. But yeah, the sweet spot is something I am worried about too. .
