VR News: HP Reverb - Second Gen headsets are on the way

Yeah, trying to take a pic through the lenses of the Rift is really tricky and it has a quite large sweet spot.
If anything, these Reverb pics look incredibly distortion free, for through lens pics.

Yeah, Iā€™ve taken a lot of through the lens shots with an iPhone 6 and it is very difficult to get the lens close to the eye piece. You inevitably end up with blurry edges, some distortion, and sometimes some refresh lines or rolling shutter artifacts.

I enjoy the MRTV guy. He definitely sounds very positive on the Reverb. But Iā€™m just chalking it up to his excitement at starting to see genuine 2nd gen stuff coming out. Canā€™t wait for the video this weekendā€¦

Review goes live in about 50 minutes. What an artificial drama!

You can read the live youtube comments for now, if needing to remove all faith in humanity while you waitā€¦

Very interesting review.

He mentioned a lot of benchmarks. @BeachAV8R, as our token top-end PC guy, how does that compare to what you are seeing today?

I hope to get some numbers up this week. My new rig is mocking me every time I wake up and get paged to go fly immediately. Amazing how that happens.

One thing I did notice was in the pre-live chat, Wags was saying hello to MRTV and asking him which would be the best way to contact him. Perhaps heā€™ll get a preview of the DCS VR improvements coming down the pipe - that would be cool.

New rig demands payment!

I started putting up some numbers HEREā€¦ My methods are not very scientific thoughā€¦

Wow, that was more exciting than the Ars Technica oneā€¦ And we still have the Index to wait forā€¦

So, that is it. This year is the year Iā€™m jumping in. Just have to wait for the winner and commit. For now itā€™s clearly between the Index and the Reverb, and I have to say, itā€™s looking to be a close fight.

IDK man. I wouldnā€™t rule out the Pimax 5K plus just yet.

I wouldnā€™t completely disregard the Rift S either. A good VR experience is a balancing act. You need a powerful PC, a good headset and equally good software/drivers. This is especially true for simming, as DCS/X-Plane/P3D are already very demanding of hardware even in 2D. Time will tell of course.

I agree.
For guys that can afford a rtx2080ti and an i9 to go with it that might not be a question, but for those of us who have only half of that budget and still want to experience VR it matters a lot.

Well, I have an i7 9800X and RTX2080 Ti and you still have to make compromises with settings for DCS and X-Plane 11 when it comes to VR.

I see the Pimax as a bit of trade off between that fantastic field of view versus the clarity. It has the extra pixels but they are stretched across a wider use. Because they use Lighthouse 1 I think it will be interesting to see how they stack against the Valve Index, as similar price brackets for the package. My guess would be the Index, but as per always the reviews tell the true story, vendor loyalty aside.

So far the reviews have been fairly underwhelming regarding the Rift S, but I agree it might be a good value headset if you donā€™t already have one.

For me the issue with Pimax is the support after the sale and the quality of the unit you receive. Seems like the quality can be a bit hit or miss based on postings Iā€™ve seen.

Yeah, I have more faith in the Index as a Pimax killer. Sure it will have slightly less resolution, but will have vive-like marketshare, availiability and seems it will be tightly integrated with steam. For another high end, expensive, outside tracking solution, thatā€™s where my chips would go.

But sure, itā€™s all crazy speculation so far!

About the Rift S, it seems it will continue to be the best all around, especially by holiday season when it will probably see a price cut. But for Sims exclusively, and for me personally, itā€™s hard to justify not going with something a little higher resolution. Even an Odyssey on the lower end.

Anyway, Iā€™m looking towards the higher end because importing this type of tech is so expensive around here that I usually have to bring it personally from a trip to the US (there is a persona import quota in those cases), so it makes more sense going for something a little more valuable up front.

Ordered a PiMax 5K+ weeks back but presumably it has to be forged in the fires of Mount Doom and can only be transported on the back of a Tortoise.

Would love to hear your impressions of it @MigBuster when you get it.

Weā€™re lucky up here in Canada, as we can use our postal service as a free ā€˜time capsule serviceā€™ - generations of people are actually shocked when their kids finally receive their mail, itā€™s sort of like a historical step back in timeā€¦

Yeah, there is a lot to be said for supporting a solid distribution process.

seen this?

reviewer seems not much happy of either of the two!

rift s too pricey for what it offers and HP reverb offers clarity only in the center, plus some other distortionsā€¦

My two cents:

I have rift and just sold my odyssey away.

Pimax 5k+ (my new toy)

: Image is way more sharp than in odyssey. RGB vs pentile is why. DCS is really sharp, and if i kick pitoll 1.25 quality its get crazy sharp but hits frames quite badly.

: Even small fov (120 horizontal) is really up from rift tunnel vision, and better than odyssey (that is bit better than rift fov)

I use normal 150 fov now, awesome SA when in combat ā€¦ cant get back to binocular fov
