€ 4,900 = $5,513.05 as of 0719 EDT…dang! I’m a nickel short.![]()
I went right to the price before looking at anything else. That’s gonna be a no from me.
That is pretty expensive indeed, shows up as 1079 € for the kit with controllers and base stations here…
Oh well, that settles it (for now at least
)
Just preordered the Rift S for 449 €, delivery May 21 at the latest it says ![]()
Yep, at 1K for the Index I don’t think I would be a consumer. However, if I could get just the headset and one lighthouse (assuming that’s all I’d need for simming) at say $650 I’d have some interest.
Right now it seems like the front runners for a resolution (my biggest complaint on my current Rift) increase at an affordable price are the Rift S and the O+. Not sure which one would ultimately have the edge for me if I had to pick one though.
The Index looks like it will be a great headset. They just need to get the software side of things to be at the same level as the Oculus platform.
Rift S pre-orders are up now, with an official release date of May 21st. I just placed my order through Amazon. The annoying thing is that I will be at recurrent training for that entire week. Just typicial… ![]()
I’d be tempted to try a Rift S through Amazon if I could actually get a full refund if it wasn’t the right choice for me.
If the HP Reverb comes available at the Microsoft Store I’ll definitely be picking one up and giving it the 30-day trial…
Exactly where I am at with it. Not saying it might not be worth that equipment wise, but i don’t think with what’s out there now I’d feel good spending 1k on VR “upgrades”
Amazon has a pretty solid refunds policy. I never had a problem sending something back no questions asked.
My decision tree is something like this so far:
1 - Wait for HP Reverb sim impressions and reviews. HP is due to release in the Microsoft store in about mid May from what I read. Best clarity for flight sims.
2 - If HP looks bad then wait for Rift S sim reviews (that aren’t under NDA to compare to other headsets) at around the May 21st Facebook release date. Interested in people’s opinions who have the O+ or Pimax already rather than Rift people seeing that resolution for the first time.
3 - If the Rift S is not a clearly better lens and screen set than current O+ (it should be, but want to wait and see real units, not youtube people playing Fruit Ninja) then I’ll pop over the border and grab a Vive Index headset and single base station to try ($649, similar to $599 HP Reverb). If the Index is clearly (heh) better then I’ll upgrade in bits later, i.e. knuckles, extra basestation.
Valve won’t ship by June anyway, so it looks like July is really when any of this is happening and people get real units. Buying or preorder stuff before then just seems like madness, as in why would you risk a $500+ purchase just to go with something without actual information. That way madness lies…
Dammit, I had hoped the index would be maximum 600€.
That price hits it firmly out of the budget I can afford.
Seems like a Rift it is the only affordable one then. ![]()
Sounds like a legit plan. I wonder if the $50 extra Reverb professional type will be available before the consumer version…and I wonder if the Microsoft Store is going to carry the pro version. I’m impatient usually…so not sure that I’d wait for the consumer version if the other version is available. Something something…might die tomorrow…or something…
I personally like the inside-out headsets for what I do.
With regards to Oculus - I’m sorta anti-Facebook these days for some reasons…which I know is a ridiculous thing when you are talking about sub-units of an entity…but if I can spend my money elsewhere, I probably will. But I don’t begrudge people that do. If that makes any sense.
I definitely wouldn’t buy a Pimax. For no other reason than I just don’t like the Pimax vibe. Again, a really weird reason not to buy something, but it is what it is.
Interested in the Valve Index…and the pricepoint isn’t a detractor necessarily…but I’m not sure how I feel about those knuckles type controllers. The Rift Touch still wins in my book for small form factor and great feel…while also being quick to unhand and put back on, which is important for some of the sim stuff we do. Unless you go totally hand controller like @smokinhole - and maybe I’ll get there. I’m certainly most of the way there when using Aerofly 2FS for sure.
I’m just hoping my hardware to push all these pixels arrives at near the same time. It would be nice to do a total upgrade across the board…
I wonder if O+ prices will drop beyond the sale price we’ve seen in the past ($300). If so, that is still a really nice headset and only perhaps a half a generation behind what is coming out.
It depends if you want a general VR system or something just for sit-down sims (flying/driving). A headset and a single base station is an option.
The VR market is splitting, in that Valve is going for the high-end 144GHz, outside in accurate tracking, moddable etc road, while Facebook is going budget conscious mainstream. It’s good they are diverging in my opinion, as both strategies are needed.
People paying for 2080Ti’s and then worrying about the $200 price difference on the Rift S vs Index side just for mainly simming is just some time needed to think through the initial sticker shock stuff.
The O+ sadly isn’t available in Europe, otherwise yeah, would be an option.
I’m waiting to see if this is the case as well, but I’d be surprised if it dropped below $300. It’s also darn close to the cost of the new Rift S when you factor in the mods you need to make it comfortable. (At least that’s my impression of the O+ threads anyway.)
After my foray into WMR/SteamVR with the O+ , I really came to appreciate how much Oculus got right with the Rift CV1 and their platform/drivers.
I’m not going down the WMR/SteamVR route again unless they catch up with Oculus in that regard (no matter what the specs of the headset are). I feel I really wasted my money with the O+ tbh.
That is correct. I have $60 in mods to mine (replacement foam cover and headstrap), not counting prescription lens inserts…which is the biggest comfort mod for any headset for people that wear glasses.
Yeah…it’s a funny thing because I couldn’t go back to my Rift at this point. I’m really happy with the O+ and once I figured out some of the initial software stuff, I haven’t touched it since and it all seems to be working well. I also haven’t purchased anything else from the Oculus store simply because I don’t want to be locked in to that platform (even though you can use other software to play those titles anyway).
Whatever the case - it is really nice that there are VR solutions for many different people…choice is probably driving innovation, which is always good in the end.
