Yeah, I’d like to see your impression of a (working) HP Reverb if you can find one. I think for seated sims, generally the inside out tracking (no matter who the headset manufacturer is) is not a bad way to go. For me, I love the portability of it. I just bought a VR specific laptop, and setting up light-houses would not really be a great option for that.

I’ve found the audio on the Rift (CV1), Odyssey +, and Reverb all to be pretty darn good. None had me considering an external headset.

For comfort…and most will find this surprising given the bad press the O+ was given, I find the O+ the most comfortable, but only AFTER significant mods to it (WidmoVR lenses, VR Covers face cushion, and another third party head strap thingy to go over the top.

I hope you get a chance to see a revised Reverb in your research. I’d loan you mine, but my 1.0 version died…LOL…not a great advertisement for HP for sure. I’ve been out of town the past 10 days, so I’m hoping the Post Office has something from HP waiting for me. We’ll see…

PS - if we could get EECH working in VR I’d die and go to heaven…haha…

@BeachAV8R’s list of add-ons is interesting. The Rift S doesn’t seem to need need mods - it is fairly comfortable enough.

However, I do have issues with lens fogging. I always have had a propensity to sweat more than average. After a couple of minutes of use (sometimes much less) the view is definitely blurry. Not too much but noticeable and annoying. I pop the head set off for a few seconds and it clears…for a while.

Any thoughts on a solution? I’m thinking headband…yes, like the kind we used to wear in the 80’s. Poking holes for ventilation? Some type of battery powered fan contraption? (Of note, I have tried turning on the cockpit fans in the Mi-8 Hip, to no avail) :sweat:

Or…are other VR headsets better ventilated?

I ran into some fogging issues early on with my OG Rift. (Seemed to have less issues with the Rift S for whatever reason.) Anyway, my solution was to point a small desktop fan at my face where the air would blow up through the nose opening and clear the lens.

Yeah…same as Kinger. I have a small fan on the desktop that just blows air across my head. Simulates flying a Waco…LOL…

Tyriel Wood compares the Oculus Rift S, HP Reverb and Valve Index.
The Rift S compares better than I would’ve guessed. Especially if you consider the price difference…

Yep, price taking into consideration, the Rift S is a really good headset! If only it had IPD adjustment, I wouldn’t have replaced it with the Index.
That being said, I’m pretty happy with the Index, despite the extra pile of cash I had to part with…
Compared to the S, there is a larger percentage of the FOV that’s clear/not blurry looking, a bit more resolution and FOV as well as IPD adjustment, a nice mechanism for moving the lenses in/out and a pair of absolutely fantastic headphone speakers.
Only negatives is there’s a bit more glare in the lenses, somewhere between S and CV1 glare levels, although it’s different and not as intrusive as the godrays in those two.

Great video…I was surprised the Reverb actually compared favorably in the color saturation and blacks…for some reason I would have thought the other headsets would have had better colors since it does seem the Reverb is brighter and less rich - but I’m coming from that O+ OLED screen, so that stands to reason.

I think he is spot on (pun intended) with the Reverb’s smaller sweet spot. And I think I know why it doesn’t bother me as a life-long eye-glasses wearer, I’m pretty much used to having to move my head to get the crispest image. I’m doing it right now looking at my monitor - if I glance 5 or 10 degrees left through my glasses without moving my head, my desktop icons are blurrier out of the center of my eyeglass prescription. If I make that small movement with my head, the text pops into crystal clarity. No doubt that 40+ years of this habit have translated to my VR experience (probably also why VR limited field of view has never really bothered me - eyeglass frames!)…

Anyway, it’s just a theory I have. What would be interesting is that with foveated rendering at some point, it is possibly feasible that my VR vision will actually be better than my real life vision without having to move my head. That’d be something…

I agree about the naturalness of aiming my head to make the gauges of interest centered as i have worn glasses for 60 years. Even so, i like the gauges that are greater than 30 degrees off of center to be reasonably clear so i can notice any large change in which case i will reaim my head to carefully read them with my foveal vision. I bet there is a bell curve of all of us that move their heads to examine in detail instead of just changing our gaze angle and whether you’ve worn glasses a long time has a lot to do with it. I really am happy with my Reverb because it is as clear as a monitor where i am looking in a normal fashion for me.

Makes sense to me.

I can believe that.
I got progressive glasses last spring, and I was convinced they must have mixed my glasses with someone elses!
But after wearing them for a few days, I realized my head had started moving a lot more and that the glasses indeed worked as intended. And I got the best Zeiss lenses, with the largest ”sweet spot” available. I wonder what I would’ve thought if I got the cheap lenses..?

The optician talked me in to trying a pair of progressive glasses not long ago. I tried them out for a month, but I simply could not get used to that small sweet spot, especially when reading.
I mean, it felt like it took double as long to read a page, having to turn my head back and forth like that!
I don’t know how you guys do it, but I wish I could get used to it, instead of always dragging around 2 pair of glasses. :nerd_face::nerd_face:
Anyway, I think Beach is right, and it probably explains my low tolerance of wrong IPD, and blurry edges!

+1 @BeachAV8R comments. I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy my Reverb. Not perfect, but every flight is a joy. This is what I consider VR v2. Looking forward to v3, but pretty happy right now.
