Quite correct. I meant successor. Love going back and playing some of those old games. Wing Commander, Freespace, Freelancer, and even Falcon 3.0 are still out there to play.
Ya gots to love how far we have come, but I remember thinking that back then too. That said the VR aspect has really brought the immersion factor way up for me.
YeahâŠthere is definitely an untangible âITâ factor to this game. It just feels so great. The atmosphere is great. The complexity is a nice mix of complex and approachable. The physics are great. The visuals are good enough because it isnât trying to be something ultra-realistic.
By the way - welcome to Mudspike - glad to have you here!
I wish I could answer your questionâŠbut I canât. But I do know there was a Stealth/RCS mission in the Steam Workshop that looked at the high/low profiles and gave an opportunity to perhaps do some testing. I have not played it, and donât really know what the outcome is:
You may find some discussions by searching the Flight School channel on the VTOL VR Discord:
Have not had a chance to watch all of that, but it does look like keeping your aircraft as naked as possible and only using your internal bays has a lot to do with the stealth of this a plane.
Some nice changes to the mission editor in this latest release that should allow for some additional creativity to be wielded by the mission creation communityâŠ!

Iâve finally gotten around to spooling up VTOL after about a year. And what a difference the year has made! The F-45A is pure fantasy, as are the rest of the machines in the VTOL lineup. But outlandish though it is I think it has given me some appreciation for what it is like to operate a current generation multirole fighter. Seriously. VTOL very logically (and I believe with some intel) has given the user the ability set up displays and configure weapons in ways I wasnât able to imagine until flying the F-45. VTOL VR, as a game, looks silly and dismissible in screenshots. And that cartoonish quality hides a very rich sim with SA and SMS customization that DCS canât touch. Well of course DCS isnât able to touch it. DCS models existing equipment. VTOL, almost as importantly, is starting to model existing capability. And because of that, there is much to be learned from it.
I just finished the one mission that comes with the F-45a. (I believe @beachâs video above if from the mission.) It requires a bit of NOE flying and general stealthiness. For someone like me who is old enough to remember the old sim F-19, this really brings back some memories.
The game is growing up fast. And I am grateful to @beachAV8R for continuing to keep it on everyoneâs radar.
Not a single week goes by where I dont load VTOL up for at least a few missions. I love the handling and the feel of the aircraft. Itâs so ridiculous sometimes with the excess power the planes have but when you have a proper battle going on and the anti ship missiles are flying at the carrier and your struggling to get airborne before they hit, my god is that some heart pounding stuff.
Dcs cant come close to that. But they are totally different beasts. If I want to learn to fly a plane I fly dcs. If I want to FLY i fly VTOL.
You nailed it. As you already know and have preached (Cut the Cord, Man!) the physical act of using hands only to manipulate either your virtual controller (virtual HOTAS) or the actual buttons, switches, and MFDs in the cockpit really brings the experience home. And the 1 to 1 head trackingâŠwhich usually leaves me a little exhausted or at least feeling muscles Iâm not used to using.
The F-45A, which I too only recently dived into, is really another step up in systems modeling and the ability to tailor the cockpit to your tastes. Do check out the Steam Workshop @smokinhole since there are quite a few F-45A (and other) missions and campaigns in there.
You are correct here @BeachAV8R the last mission in the first campaign left me actually physically drained. I felt like I had WON that fight. Not just pickled a few bombs and set of some mission triggers. I earned that win. Itâs quite an epic feeling
YeahâŠthat was a very memorable mission. Memorable for me because I had actually about 99% completed it and then I got shot down by one of those corkscrewing cruise missiles fired from one of my own cruisers!! ARGH! Replayed it from the start and beat it thoughâŠgreat mission!
There is a campaign being made right now called Alaska Blood & Oil that should be coming out soon-ish⊠And the Mission Editor just got revamped to add some more complex taskings and logic I think. Good stuff. I cannot wait for multiplayer!
I would love, flat freakinâ LOVE, for you to get an AMA with the dev. You were a very early fan of this great sim and Mudspike is the perfect place for the story behind VTOL to be told in full.
Brakes are usually the trigger of your left hand when you are attached to the throttle. And in case you didnât knowâŠdouble clicking one of your controller buttons usually grabs the throttle and HOLDS it so that you donât have to constantly squeeze.
Similarly - depending on whether you are using RIFT or WMR, the nozzle is on the left controller and is usually the touch-pad or similar on the RiftâŠ
